2016 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE Complaints and Recall Information

The 2016 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE has 13 complaints and 11 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with engine performance, transmission problems, and tire failures. Several complaints reference sudden engine failures, rough running conditions, and fuel pump malfunctions, with some describing safety concerns related to stalling and shifting malfunctions.

Common Issues

  • Engine mount failure. The engine mounts can fail prematurely, causing the engine to become loose and rise when accelerating, raising risk of catastrophic failure.
  • Engine stalling and rough running. Vehicles have shut down unexpectedly during driving or idling, sometimes with check engine lights illuminated and diagnostic trouble codes indicating intake valve or fuel system issues.
  • Fuel pump failure. Fuel pumps have failed multiple times in the same vehicle, causing stalling and requiring replacements at relatively low mileage.
  • Transmission shifting problems. Owners report inability to shift into desired gears, warning messages to shift into park, and unexpected "buck" or lunging when slowing, causing safety risks.
  • Tire failures. Multiple front and rear tires have developed bulges or suffered blowouts at highway speeds despite no external damage or rough terrain exposure.
  • Wiper freezing issue. Windshield wipers freeze to the glass in cold climates because they park below the dashboard heat area, impairing visibility during icy conditions.
  • Gear selector assembly failure. The shifter indicator lights fail, accompanied by warning messages stating the gear is not recognized, making the vehicle unsafe to operate.
  • Seat headrest deployment. The passenger front seat headrest deployed spontaneously while the vehicle was parked without any impact or collision.

Following these complaints, the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is subject to 11 recalls affecting various systems including engine, transmission, lighting, brakes, fuel system, and cruise control software. These recalls address safety and functional defects that have resulted in engine stalls, shifting failures, brake caliper cracks, and cruise control system malfunctions.

Recalls

  • Engine crankshaft sensor (23V411000) 80,629 vehicles affected. The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate and cause engine stalls by disrupting synchronization of fuel injectors and camshaft timing. TIRES

Tires: Pirelli 285/40R22. Tires failed: Front passenger + Both -Driver/Passenger tires. Failures did not occur concurrently. I am writing to report significant issues with the Pirelli tires on my vehicle, raising serious safety concerns. (Usage, two tires - 11 months / 1 tire - 4 months) Firstly, the front passenger tire has developed noticeable bumps on the sidewall near the rim. Notably, these tires have never encountered foreign objects or rough terrain that could have caused this damage. The bulges indicate potential internal damage, compromising the tire's structural integrity and posing a risk while driving. Additionally, the passenger rear tire suffered a catastrophic blowout at 65 mph on Interstate 75. Examination revealed a 10-inch strip had detached from the tire's inner layer. This sudden failure occurred without warning and could have resulted in a severe loss of control, endangering my safety and that of other road users. Similarly, the driver rear tire also blew out at 65 mph on Interstate 10 due to a failed section measuring approximately 6 inches along the contact area. These incidents raise critical concerns about the reliability of these tires, especially at highway speeds. Following these events, my technicians inspected the vehicle and found no other underlying issues, raising further questions about the quality and durability of these tires. I urge you to investigate thoroughly to prevent risks for other customers relying on your products. Thank you for your attention to this issue.

ENGINE

During a routine trip, in a suburban area, on a cold winter morning my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo was running rough and losing power as soon as I started it. The engine light came on and we immediately stopped driving and had it towed for repairs. The Dealer diagnosed the problem by observing that the front of the engine rose up when the gas pedal was pressed, and the engine was loose. We are concerned this failure could have resulted in engine falling out of the car, which could have caused a catastrophic accident, fire from the loss of fuel, and loss of life or serious injuries. The engine mounts failed at about 76,101 miles. This did not result in an accident or damage This problem was diagnosed and repaired by the Stafford, Chrysler Jeep Rambler Dealer (the Dealer) at 121A West Stafford Rd, Stafford Springs CT who can be reached at 860-684-8877. The Dealer stated that it was unusual for the engine mounts to fail at such a low mileage unless there was an accident or heavy usage (we do not know of any such issues). We bought the car the certified used from Bolles Motors (the previous owner of the Dealer) with 46,370 miles. The Carfax showed regular maintenance and did show any accidents. We drove only the car 29,731 miles before the engine mounts failed. A copy of the receipt and photos of the engine mounts are attached.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

The 2011-2021 Jeep WK2 Grand Cherokees all have a safety issue when driven in colder climates in snowy, or icy conditions. Where the wipers are parked on the windshield is below the level of the dashboard, so any heat that is produced by the windshield defroster does not warm the glass where the wipers are parked. This leads to the wipers freezing to the windshield, and cannot be operated to clear the windshield. I don't know why this hasn't been a recall issue in the past, as it effects every WK2 in those years. The solution would be to remove the windshield, and add a heating element to the inside of the glass, similar to the rear window, which happens to have a heating element underneath the rear wiper. There are other vehicles that do have heating elements under the front wipers, namely the Jeep KL Cherokee models. So, FCA knew this was a problem, and decided to ignore it, as they have done many other issues.
