2018 JAYCO EAGLE Complaints and Recall Information

The 2018 JAYCO EAGLE has 2 complaints and 8 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report structural frame issues that have caused electrical shorts and complete failure of trailer braking. The frame defects involve extensive cracking and loss of stiffness, which may affect overall vehicle safety and durability.

Common Issues

  • Frame cracking. Several frame stiffeners and crossmembers cracked nearly entirely through on both sides of the trailer due to manufacturing cuts that removed 95% of the web of the C-channel to accommodate wiring and motors.
  • Electrical short. Wiring for the trailer brake system fell into a crack in the frame causing damage and resulting in a short circuit that caused loss of trailer braking on a 13,000 lb GVWR camper.
  • Loss of trailer braking. The compromised frame integrity led to electrical issues that disabled the trailer brake system, impacting safe operation.
  • Corrosion indication. Rust and paint condition suggested the frame cracks had likely existed for an extended period despite relatively low mileage of around 10,000 miles.

There are 8 recalls for this model affecting multiple systems primarily related to propane safety, structural hardware, and labeling accuracy. These recalls address defects that increase the risk of fire, crash, or incorrect load capacity information.

Recalls

  • Propane regulator failure. (NHTSA 21V685000, 29,825 vehicles) Winntec model 6020 two-stage propane regulators may fail, increasing propane pressure and enlarging appliance flames which raises fire risk. Dealers will replace the regulator and test the propane system at no cost.
  • Propane pressure defect. (NHTSA 21V425000, 87,649 vehicles) Similar issue with Winntec 6020 regulators causing excessive propane pressure, increasing fire risk. Dealers will replace and inspect propane system free of charge.
  • Incorrect GVWR label. (NHTSA 18V073000, 461 vehicles) Federal labels incorrectly list GVWR as 11,750 lbs instead of 11,700 lbs, risking vehicle overload and crash. Jayco will issue corrected labels at no cost to owners.
  • Cooktop flame inversion. (NHTSA 18V075000, 26 vehicles) Flame on the cooktop can invert or extinguish when the furnace is on, while propane gas continues to flow, risking explosion. Dealers will install wood panels to prevent airflow issues free of charge.
  • Pin box spindle spacing. (NHTSA 18V286000, 610 vehicles) Incorrect spindle placement on certain 16K rotational rubber pin boxes may loosen bearings, risking spindle failure and crash. Dealers will add spacers to correct spacing at no cost.
  • Underrated safety chains. (NHTSA 18V072000, 81 vehicles) Safety chains rated for 11,700 lbs are insufficient for a GVWR of 12,500 lbs, risking trailer detachment and crash. Dealers will install higher-rated safety chains free of charge.
  • Propane tank strap failure. (NHTSA 18V364000, 612 vehicles) Straps securing LP gas bottles may separate, risking tank detachment, fire, or crash. Dealers will replace straps with correctly crimped versions free of charge.
  • Incorrect GAWR label. (NHTSA 17V350000, 88 vehicles) Federal placards list axle capacity as 5,800 lbs instead of the correct 5,660 lbs, increasing crash risk from overloading. Jayco will provide corrected labels free of charge.

Owners with repeated repairs, unresolved recall issues, or safety defects involving braking or propane systems may have rights under state lemon laws. Consulting consumer protection resources is advisable for those facing ongoing problems.

EQUIPMENT:RECREATIONAL VEHICLE/TRAILER:LPG SYSTEMS

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2018 Eagle travel trailers, model 333BHOK. The flame on the Furrion cook top can become inverted or go out when the furnace is turned on, however, liquid propane (LP) gas will continue to flow to the burners.

Risk: LP gas flow to an unlit stove burner may result in an explosion, increasing the risk of injury.

18V073000

EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2018 Eagle EA, EB, ED travel trailers. The Federal Labels and Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC) label on these vehicles may incorrectly list the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) as 11,750lbs, when the actual GVWR is 11,700lbs. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

Risk: If the GVWR is incorrect it can allow the vehicle to be overloaded, increasing the risk of a crash.

EQUIPMENT:RECREATIONAL VEHICLE/TRAILER:LPG SYSTEMS:TANK ASSEMBLY

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Eagle, Eagle HT, NorthPoint, Pinnacle, Talon and Seismic fifth-wheel recreational trailers. The strap that secures the liquid propane (LP) gas bottle may separate from its buckle and no longer secure the propane tank.

Risk: An unsecured propane tank could detach from the trailer and increase the risk of a crash or leak propane and increase the risk of a fire.

EQUIPMENT

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2017, 2018 Eagle 333BHOK (EC) travel trailers. The safety chains on these vehicles are rated at 11,700 lbs, however the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is 12,500lbs. In the event of a trailer detachment, the underrated safety chains may fail.

Risk: If the safety chains fail in the event of a detachment, the trailer would separate from the tow vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

2018 JAYCO EAGLE

610 vehicles affected

18V286000

TRAILER HITCHES:FIFTH WHEEL ASSEMBLY

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2018 Jayco Eagle HT fifth wheel trailers equipped with certain 16K rotational rubber pin boxes. The spindle placement in the pin box may be incorrect, causing the bearing to be loose.

Risk: If the bearings become loose, the spindle may fail, increasing the risk of a crash.

17V350000

EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2018 Eagle TT 330RSTS (EA) recreational trailers. The Federal Placard on these vehicles incorrectly lists the Gross Axle Weight Rating capacity (GAWR) as 5,800lbs, when the axles actually have a capacity of 5,660lbs. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

Risk: The incorrect GAWR may result in the vehicle being overloaded, causing a loss of control and increasing the risk of a crash.

STRUCTURE

I was troubleshooting a short in the electrical trailer brake circuit and found the cause: the wire had fallen into a crack in the frame crossmember which was chewing on it. Upon further examination, several frame stiffeners/crossmembers had cracked almost entirely through on both sides of the trailer. They cracked because during manufacturing, some goober decided it'd be a good idea to cut 95% of the web of the C-channel away to make holes 10x as large as they needed to be to run wires and slide motors. According to the original owner, he took it from IN to FL twice and I put about 3k miles on it according to my records so it only has maybe 10k miles. Looking at the amount of rust and condition of the paint compared to the rest of the underside of the camper, it looks to have been broken almost as long as the rest of the camper. This issue HAS resulted in the loss of trailer braking on a 13k lb GVWR camper. This issue does cause loss of stiffness in the frame that COULD result in excessive flex causing damage to the camper while going down the road up to catastrophic failure of the frame.
