Recalls- Brake system software. NHTSA campaign 20V319000 affects 12,200 vehicles. The body control module may lose communication with the electronic brake control module. This can prevent the ABS malfunction indicator light from illuminating, increasing crash risk. Dealers will update the BCM software calibration at no charge. The recall started June 29, 2020.
- ABS warning light failure. Also part of 20V319000, the ABS malfunction indicator light may not activate due to BCM and EBCM communication loss. This violates FMVSS 105 and raises crash risk if drivers are unaware of brake issues. GM will notify owners and update the software.
- Brake control unit defect. Included in 20V319000, the electronic brake control module may malfunction without proper BCM communication, affecting brake system warnings. Dealers fix this by software recalibration free of charge.
- Hydraulic brake system risk. These trucks may fail FMVSS 105 due to BCM-EBCM communication loss, which can cause an ABS light failure. GM’s remedy is a software update beginning mid-2020.
- Rear suspension U-bolts. NHTSA campaign 21V194000 involves 258 vehicles. Rear axle U-bolt nuts may loosen if not properly tightened, leading to axle misalignment. This can cause propeller shaft separation and loss of power, risking a stall and crash. Dealers inspect and tighten or replace U-bolts starting April 23, 2021.
Owners facing repeated brake system or suspension repairs, or unresolved recall issues, should consider checking their rights under applicable state lemon laws for possible assistance.

General Motors is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD Medium Duty trucks. If the vehicle's body control module (BCM) loses communication with the vehicle's electronic brake control module (EBCM), the EBCM software programming may not illuminate the vehicle's ABS malfunction indicator light (MIL). As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 105, "Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems."
Risk: If a driver is unaware that the ABS system is malfunctioning, there may be an increased risk of a crash.
