2022 IC BUS CESB Complaints and Recall Information

The 2022 IC BUS CESB has 4 complaints and 7 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the engine exhaust pipe melting due to excessive heat, creating holes that allow fumes and potential fire hazards. Another reported problem involves the emergency exit window alarm sounding unexpectedly, which interferes with safe operation.

Common Issues
  • Exhaust pipe melting. The exhaust down pipe from the exhaust manifold melts from excessive heat, causing large holes that can release fumes and pose fire risks. This problem has occurred across multiple buses with the same powertrain.
  • Excessive engine heat. Heat generated by the engine or possible misprogramming leads to overheating of the exhaust system. This contributes to the damage and creates unsafe conditions.
  • Emergency exit alarm malfunction. The buzzer sensor on emergency exit windows activates without actual window loosening. The alarm can disrupt driver focus and has been reproduced by inducing vibrations outside the bus.

There are 7 recalls affecting various systems including brakes, structural integrity, roof joint strength, emergency exits, and the engine control module. The recalls address safety-critical defects that could increase the risk of fire, structural failure, crash injury, or unexpected engine shutdown.

Recalls
  • Brake pressure switch leak. (NHTSA 25V503000) About 16,553 buses may have brake fluid leaking into electrical components causing short circuits and fire risk. Owners are advised to park outside until repairs are made. Dealers will install a silicone jumper harness free of charge.
  • Underfloor reinforcement missing. (NHTSA 25V580000) Approximately 193 buses lack proper reinforcement affecting structural integrity and compliance with seat belt anchorage and crash protection standards. Dealers will inspect and install reinforcements at no cost.
  • Roof panel joint strength. (NHTSA 23V065000) About 12,507 buses have roof panels with insufficient joint strength which may separate during crashes. Dealers will add additional fasteners to secure joints free of charge.
  • ABS indicator light failure. (NHTSA 23V371000) Nearly 19,376 buses have ABS warning lights that fail to stay illuminated during malfunctions, preventing driver alerts and increasing crash risk. Software updates will be performed at no cost.
  • Brake pressure switch assembly. (NHTSA 23V398000) Around 15,398 buses risk electrical shorts from fluid leaks in the brake pressure switch assembly causing potential fires. Owners should park outside until repair. Dealers will replace the switch assembly and related components free of charge.
  • Engine control module fault. (NHTSA 21V837000) About 7,322 buses have ECM faults causing unexpected engine shutdowns that pose crash and evacuation risks. Dealers will reprogram the ECM free of charge.
  • Inadequate emergency exits. (NHTSA 21V450000) Thirty-three buses lack sufficient emergency exits, delaying evacuation during emergencies. Two additional exit windows will be installed at no cost to owners.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs from these issues, safety defects, or unresolved recall problems may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting with an attorney familiar with lemon law may help clarify available options.

STRUCTURE:BODY

International Motors, LLC (International) is recalling certain 2020-2026 IC Bus CESB and 2021 RESB school buses. The underfloor reinforcement may not have been installed, compromising the structural integrity of the buses. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages" and 222, "School Bus Passenger Seating and Crash Protection."

Risk: Reduced structural integrity may increase the risk of injury in a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The contact called on behalf of the owner of a 2022 IC BUS CESB. The contact works as the district mechanic for the Chase County Schools District. The contact stated that while driving the bus on a rural road, the alarm buzzer sensor on the emergency exit windows activated independently. Due to the rough conditions, the buzzer alarm activated. The windows were not loosened; however, the alarm sounded to indicate a failure. The contact had experienced the failure with the 5 school buses he oversaw. The contact stated that the alarm sound prevented the driver from safely operating the vehicle. The contact was able to recreate the failure by jumping up and down outside of the bus. The contact inspected the buzzer alarm; however, the cause of the failure was not found. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.
