2014 IC BUS BE Complaints and Recall Information

The 2014 IC BUS BE has 0 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to seat belt engagement, seat padding impact protection, wheelchair lift platform integrity, and cooling system hose failure for similar model buses in these recalls.

The bus is subject to multiple safety-related recalls affecting seat belts, seating, wheelchair lift equipment, and engine cooling components. These recalls involve inspecting, repairing, or replacing various parts to address risks of injury or component failure.

  • Seat belt buckle defect. The latch plate can become partially engaged, making the seat belt difficult to unlatch. This obstructs egress during emergencies (Recall 13V630000).
  • Inadequate seat padding. Foam padding does not sufficiently reduce knee impact forces, increasing injury risk in crashes (Recall 13V308000).
  • Wheelchair lift platform cracks. Platform side plates may crack, potentially causing the lift platform to separate and fall when the door opens (Recall 14V692000).
  • Wheelchair lift bearing displacement. Fold link arms may have oversized pivot holes causing bearing movement. The platform may move excessively or fail, risking falls during operation (Recall 15V868000).
  • Heater hose fatigue and leak. Formed heater hose near the driver may split, leaking hot coolant into the footwell and risking burns or crashes (Recall 16V837000).

Recalls

  • Seat belts (13V630000). Affects 2,357 vehicles with IMMI-brand L9 buckles made Aug-Nov 2013. The latch plate can partially engage, hindering seat belt release and emergency exit. Dealers replace faulty buckles at no cost.
  • Seats (13V308000). Covers 22,264 buses from Feb 2010 to June 2013. Insufficient foam padding increases knee impact injury risk in crashes. Polystyrene blocks are added to seats free of charge.
  • Wheelchair lift platform side plate (14V692000). Applies to 4,784 buses 2007-2015 with certain Ricon lifts. Cracking side plates can cause platform separation and fall hazard on door opening. Supplemental bumpers or replacement platforms are installed by dealers.
  • Wheelchair lift folding link arms (15V868000). The same 4,784 buses also face oversized pivot holes allowing bearing displacement and platform failure risk. Dealers inspect and replace damaged parts at no charge. This is a follow-up to a prior recall.
  • Engine cooling hose (16V837000). 20,673 buses from 2011-2016 may have heater hoses that fatigue and split, leaking hot coolant into the driver footwell. Dealers replace the hose to prevent burn or crash risks free of charge.

Owners coping with repeated repairs or unresolved recall issues involving safety-related defects may want to explore their rights under state lemon laws.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:HOSES/LINES/PIPING/FITTINGS

Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain model year 2011-2016 IC Bus CE school buses manufactured November 3, 2009, to February 26, 2015, and 2012-2015 IC Bus BE school buses manufactured August 2, 2010, to September 15, 2014. The affected vehicles have a water shutoff valve, inside, forward of driver heater (feature code 48PPJ or 48PPP) that has a formed heater hose that over time, may fatigue and split resulting in hot engine coolant fluid leaking into the driver's foot area.

Risk: If hot, pressurized coolant suddenly spills into the operator's foot area, there is an increased risk of a burn injury or a crash.

EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2007-2015 IC BE and CE school buses, 2013-2015 IC AE school buses, 2007-2011 IC FE school buses, and 2007-2014 IC RE school buses equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts by Ricon. The affected lifts are equipped with folding link arms that may have pivot holes that are too big, allowing the bearings to move out of position.

Risk: If the bearings move out of position, the stowed platform may have excessive movement resulting in failure of the platform mounting. This failure could cause the wheel chair lift platform to fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, increasing the risk of injury for the lift operator.

EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY

Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 IC AE, 2007-2015 IC BE, CE, 2007-2011 IC FE, and 2007-2014 IC RE school buses equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts manufactured by Ricon Corporation after January 1, 2006. The platform side plate of the affected wheelchair lifts may crack.

Risk: If the platform side plates crack, the lift platform can separate from the lift and come to rest against the vehicle's lift door. When the doors are opened, the platform may fall out, increasing the risk of injury to the lift operator.

SEATS

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 IC Bus AE, and 2011-2014 BE, CE, and RE buses. These buses were manufactured February 11, 2010, through June 17, 2013. The passenger seat foam padding did not adequately reduce the impact forces to the knee in the lower outside corners of the seat back during compliance testing. Thus, these buses fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 222, "School Bus Passenger Seating and Crash Protection."

Risk: In the event of a crash, the seat padding may not properly protect against knee impact force, increasing the risk of injury.

SEAT BELTS

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2014 IC Bus AE, BE and RE and model year 2014-2015 IC Bus CE school buses manufactured August 08, 2013, through November 14, 2013 and equipped with IMMI-brand L9 seat belt buckles. When the button is pressed to release the seat belt, the latch plate can become partially engaged with the buckle, making the seat belt difficult to unlatch. Thus, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."

Risk: If the latch plate remains partially engaged after the button is pressed, egress from the vehicle could be hindered which would increase the risk of injury in the event of an emergency.
