2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON Complaints and Recall Information

The 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON has 2 complaints and 3 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners frequently report issues related to airbag deployment and delays in obtaining recall repair parts. One owner described a partial airbag deployment in a moderate crash without warning lights, while another noted a significant delay in recall part availability for the brake system.

Common Issues

  • Delayed recall repairs. Owners report recall repair parts for the hydraulic brake system were unavailable for an extended period, causing delays in completing necessary repairs.
  • Airbag deployment problems. The steering wheel airbag partially deployed without inflation during a moderate to serious accident, raising concerns about its effectiveness in protecting the driver.

There are three recalls affecting this model that address airbag mounting, brake system safety, and engine oil pan leaks. These recalls cover multiple safety-critical systems including the supplemental restraint system, braking controls, and engine components.

Recalls

  • Airbag assembly. NHTSA recall 14V245000 affects 137,500 vehicles manufactured between January 2011 and December 2013. The driver’s airbag assembly may come loose from its mounting, increasing the risk of injury during a crash. Dealers will inspect and tighten the airbag bolts at no cost to owners.
  • Brake system control module. Recall 23V651000 affects 1,649,478 vehicles including the 2012 Tucson. The ABS control module may leak brake fluid internally causing an electrical short and potential engine compartment fire. Owners are advised to park outside away from structures until repairs are done. Dealers will replace the ABS fuse free of charge.
  • Engine oil pan leak. Recall 19V063000 covers 120,000 Tucson vehicles from 2011 to 2013. A leaking oil pan may cause engine damage that could lead to fire or engine stall. Dealers will inspect the oil pan, replace if needed, and install an updated oil pressure switch at no charge.

Owners encountering repeated repairs for safety defects or unresolved recall issues may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a consumer protection attorney could be beneficial for addressing ongoing problems with this vehicle.

AIR BAGS

Airbag located in the steering wheel partially deployed during a moderate/serious accident. It came out of the front of the steering wheel but never inflated. I have pictures available of the partially deployed airbag. No other airbags were deployed during this front end crash. The seatbelt tensioner did activate and prevented serious injury during the crash. There was no indication, via warning lights or any other messages, that the system was not working properly. All outstanding recalls for the vehicle had been addressed. It is unknown if the partial deployment was indicated in the police report. No other inspections of the system have been done. Insurance adjuster from at-fault party will be performing an assessment of damage this week. Thankfully the most serious injury is from the seat belt and this partial deployment of the airbag did not cause a more serious injury.
