ENGINE

Safety Complaint Summary: I am filing a safety complaint regarding my 2020 Hyundai Palisade SEL AWD, ~96,000 miles). This vehicle has suffered three major powertrain failures under 100,000 miles: - Full engine replacement (due to excessive oil consumption, unresolved for months) - AWD system repairs - Now requires a full transmission replacement When my engine began burning oil, Hyundai’s service department charged me ~$500 and sent me back on the road without disclosing that this was a known issue. I continued running out of oil multiple times until an independent mechanic diagnosed the defect. My family was unknowingly placed at risk while Hyundai delayed resolution for 8 months. Diminished Value: The repeated nature of these failures not only raises safety concerns but has also destroyed the market value of the vehicle. Even after a transmission replacement, the Palisade remains a car that no buyer would trust — which underscores the seriousness of these systemic safety risks. Relief Requested: I ask NHTSA to review whether this defect pattern represents a broader safety issue and whether Hyundai should have disclosed the known oil consumption defect earlier and should investigate why a vehicle is suffering three powertrain issues and if this is a wider problem with the car type/year. A notice to consumers should be issued so we are not driving around in an unsafe car.

SUV is consuming oil prior to 5000 miles. I went to the dealer in June after noticing my SUV shuttering and almost shutting off while accelerating and it was noted that all of my oil was gone. I was instructed to get an oil change. I came back a month and a half later and all of my oil was gone again and it had been less than 5000 miles since the last oil change. I was instructed to get another oil change and come back in 1000 miles. It has been 3 weeks and I came back 1000 miles later with most of the oil gone. Diagnostic showed internal damage and the valve seal is leaking internally. There were no warning lights. I am waiting for further inspection by the dealer.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

While merging onto a highway, my 2020 Hyundai Palisade abruptly lost all engine power and stalled. This immediate and complete failure occurred at a critical moment, posing an extreme safety risk. All dashboard warning lights illuminated, but provided no specific diagnosis. The vehicle was towed to a dealership, where technicians determined the engine was consuming oil at an abnormal rate, despite a lack of visible leaks. I was instructed to participate in an "oil consumption test," a three-part process that required multiple oil changes and inspections over several months. Each time, the vehicle had burned over a quart of oil—a clear indication of a defect. Despite this evidence, Hyundai denied my warranty claim, accusing me of negligence for being unable to produce oil change records between 29,600 and 46,900 miles. This is a common and unacceptable tactic used to avoid accountability for a widespread issue. My experience is not isolated. Hundreds, if not thousands, of owners of 2020-2023 Hyundai models, including the Palisade, report identical engine oil over-consumption issues and subsequent power loss. This issue is a **severe safety hazard** that can lead to sudden, catastrophic engine failure and potential accidents. Hyundai's refusal to acknowledge this defect and issue a recall is **gross negligence**. They are knowingly allowing thousands of unsafe vehicles to remain on the road. There are currently federal lawsuits against Hyundai for this very issue. The transportation authority must force Hyundai to issue an immediate recall and remedy this critical defect before a tragedy occurs.

Rear shocks leaking and fail inspection. This was confirmed by both the dealer and independent service center. There were no warnings. This is the second time the same shocks have needed to be replaced. The first time they lasted 3 years, the second time two years. On [XXX], while driving on the freeway, my 2020 Hyundai Palisade suddenly malfunctioned and went up in flames without warning. My young son was in the vehicle with me. Within moments, smoke and fire spread rapidly, forcing us to stop in traffic and escape before the fire fully engulfed the car. The entire vehicle became a total loss. This was a terrifying, life-threatening situation. My safety and my son’s safety were at extreme risk. If my other family members had been in the car, the outcome could have been catastrophic. The emotional trauma from this event is significant and continues to affect us. The incident was reported to the San Antonio Fire Department, who responded to the scene and documented the fire. Their reports confirm the vehicle fire: Incident Report #[XXX] and SAFD Case #[XXX]. After researching, I discovered that similar fires have been reported in Hyundai vehicles, raising concerns that this is part of a wider safety defect. Families should not have to fear their vehicle spontaneously igniting on the road. At the time of the fire, there were no warning lamps, error messages, or symptoms that suggested the vehicle was unsafe. The failure happened suddenly and without warning. The vehicle has not been inspected by Hyundai at this time, but it is available for inspection upon request. I am urging a full investigation into Hyundai’s design and safety practices, as this fire placed lives in immediate danger. This was not just a mechanical failure—it was a potentially fatal event that could have resulted in severe injury or loss of life.

ENGINE

Follow-Up Complaint – Engine Failure on 2020 Hyundai Palisade (VIN: [XXX] ) I am following up on a previous complaint regarding a complete engine failure in my 2020 Hyundai Palisade. I purchased the vehicle from CarMax in 2023 and was never made aware of any known engine issues. I also signed the required Lemon Law disclosure form at purchase, which did not indicate any concerns with the engine. My vehicle experienced a sudden and total engine failure, despite being properly maintained. This failure mirrors the symptoms of engine problems that have led to multiple Hyundai recalls in other models with similar engine configurations. Although my VIN is not included in the current recall list, my engine failure is consistent with those affected, indicating a broader issue that Hyundai has not fully addressed. The engine failed prematurely and unexpectedly, which is both a serious safety hazard and a financial burden. I am now stuck with an inoperable vehicle and costly repair needs due to a failure that appears to stem from a manufacturer defect. This situation reflects a pattern of engine-related issues across Hyundai vehicles. I urge NHTSA to investigate whether the 2020 Palisade should be included in Hyundai’s ongoing or expanded recalls. Hyundai must be held accountable for engine defects—regardless of whether a VIN is currently listed. I am requesting that this matter be escalated and reconsidered. My car has been diagnosed, by a dealership, with excessive oil consumption due to a faulty piston ring which caused there to be no compression in cylinder 1. Initially my car had smoke coming from the tailpipe, then it started to shake while idling and the check engine light came on (delearship cleared it), then it overheated on me while going down the road with no warning whatsoever. Each time there was no oil on the lipstick. This is dangerous for people to not have any warning as to when the car is going to overheat until its already overheating. It could potentially set on fire while going down the highway with my [XXX] and [XXX] old. As soon as I put oil in it, it runs totally fine. I have voice recordings to confirm the diagnosis. This vehicle has excessive oil consumption, and the low oil light does not light up to tell you that you are low on oil. I only noticed that I was low on oil because the engine starts knocking and started to stall. I had the oil changed according to all service intervals and at one point the dealership told me my car had no oil left in it. I just had it changed, drove about 2k miles and already had to put more oil in because it didn't even show any oil on the dip stick. This is a safety hazard as well as an environmental problem with these vehicles burning this much oil. This started happening around 80-90k miles on the engine.

See on line chat forums; Google "Hyundai Palisade Rear Shck Failures". - Hyundai has failed to correct this safety issue and continues to manufacture and offer their self leveling rear shocks on certain model trims. POWER TRAIN

Over the past 5 years, this vehicle has experienced three major powertrain failures: two complete transmission failures and, most recently, a catastrophic engine failure. The most recent issue involved the engine burning excessive oil without warning. While my wife was driving downhill, the vehicle shut off completely, causing a total loss of power steering and braking. She was barely able to get it safely to the side of the road. It was a serious safety risk, especially with children in the vehicle. Each failure has occurred well before it should in terms of mileage, and despite repairs, the issues continue. After this third failure, Hyundai offered to cover only 50% of the repair costs—which seems to acknowledge some degree of corporate responsibility—but we declined, as this is a relatively new vehicle and the problem is clearly systemic. We paid the second total transmission replacement completely out of pocket. A quick Google search and outreach to social media revealed that hundreds of Hyundai owners (across multiple models from this era) are experiencing very similar engine issues, many with official recalls for consumption, but there being no official recall or widespread support for Palisade owners. Personal stories suggest a clear pattern. The original dealership that sold the vehicle listed it as Certified Pre-Owned, but has since changed ownership and retains no records, which has made verifying the warranty status impossible. Hyundai corporate and customer service have been extremely difficult to work with—there are multiple active case numbers, no internal communication, and the local dealership doesn’t coordinate with national reps. This vehicle has spent over 100 days in service across these failures. I’ve tried every route available—dealership, corporate support, and online forums. The community is unsafe, and without broader action, other families could be at risk.

ENGINE

Hello, I have a 2020 Hyundai Palisade that was bought last year in 2024. It’s had no issues with the engine up until approximately the last 2 weeks with oil consumption and noises from the engine rattling. I contacted the dealership to get it checked out and on the way there it caught fire. The engine died and almost all of the oil leaked out. The engine block now has a hole in it, so it is unable to be driven. My husband was driving and had just had surgery. Thankfully I was driving in a separate vehicle with my kids in case something like this happened. It has been sitting at the dealership since the 28th of May. The dealership inspected it and said there is no known cause at this time. The dealership also said they unfortunately can’t do anything. I called my insurance and they said the only thing they can cover is the damages caused by the fire. The estimate amount to fix it is 13K. But I believe the engine malfunctioned and was already having problems without my knowledge of it. There were no warning lights or alerts stating there were any problems with the vehicle. I also do know there is a class action lawsuit happening because of the 2020 Hyundai Palisades.

We have a a reoccurring issue of a gear selector malfunction warning popping up on the dash. When this happens it is at random and causes the vehicle to forcibly put the car in park. The heavy concern is that it happens when the car is in motion. Forst few times it happened when backing out of a parking spot. Most recently it happened while driving out of our neighborhood. My concern is that this could potentially happen during a time in which speeds are higher and cause a wreck. We have taken the vehicle to Hyundai dealership locally and the code for the issue will not show so they send us home because they are not able to pinpoint the exact problem. We have continued use of the vehicle because when this does happen we have been able to cycle the car off and on and it goes back to normal and all warnings are cleared..... this cannot be normal a nd I just don't wish to find out what happens when it does this at a higher rate of speed.

The speedometer occasionally would not work. Typically all other dash features would and I could get speed through digital reading. Today, none of the dash reading work. My speedometer has the dial at 155. The digital reads 0, gas shows E, miles to empty remained at 260 for the over 10 mile drive, ramps as well as coolant didn’t register and were at 0 and C. This is a hazard as it is a safety requirement to follow the speed limit when driving. This placed myself and others in danger. You are welcome to inspect this. When I have called the dealer previously for this concern, I was told that this would need to be covered by myself. A simple internet search shows that this is a more common issue than it should be.

I am writing to formally submit a complaint regarding my 2020 Hyundai Palisade, which has experienced a sudden and complete engine failure. This issue poses serious safety concerns and appears consistent with widespread reports of engine-related defects in Hyundai vehicles. I purchased this vehicle in 2023 from CarMax as a used vehicle, and at the time of purchase, I signed all necessary documents, including the federally required Lemon Law Disclosure form. This document is intended to protect consumers and ensure transparency about any known issues or potential defects associated with the vehicle. At no time was I informed that my vehicle may be subject to engine-related concerns that could result in total engine failure. Recently, my Hyundai Palisade’s engine failed, requiring a full replacement. I have discovered that Hyundai has issued multiple recalls in recent years related to defective engines in various models due to manufacturing flaws that can lead to knocking, stalling, or engine seizure—all of which create serious safety hazards. Although my vehicle is not currently listed under a recall, it is highly suspicious that I am facing the exact same problem affecting thousands of other Hyundai owners. This situation is unacceptable and undermines consumer trust. I urge the NHTSA to investigate whether the 2020 Hyundai Palisade should be included in existing or new recall campaigns related to engine defects. No consumer should bear the burden of an expensive engine replacement when manufacturer defects are clearly a pattern within the brand. Please advise me of any steps I can take to formally escalate this matter and ensure Hyundai is held accountable for this serious failure.

STEERING

The steering on the vehicle will stop responding when turning at low speeds. The vehicle will feel like it hits the “bump stop” and then will come back to center. You can then turn past that point. This has almost cause accidents because you cannot effectively steer to avoid obstacles and cannot maneuver effectively at low speeds. It occurred randomly. Was troubleshot at dealership without resolution because they could not replicate the issue. There are no hazard lights indicating an error.

The vehicle has an engine flaw, which caused the vehicle engine to stop running while I was driving down a busy highway to take my children to their activities. The traffic behind me nearly slammed into the back of my Hyundai Palisade because the engine cut off without warning. There was no indication of engine trouble, no dashboard lights, no warnings at all. All the preventive maintenance was performed at the dealership, including an oil change only one month prior to this incident. Turns out the engine cut off because of lack of oil. Now I am finding out from the dealership and the manufacturer that the engine does have a known Oil Consumption issue causing the combustion chamber to need cleaning before and beyond a preventive maintenance schedule. But there still needs to be a warning light or something to inform the driver about the potential engine cut off. It is unsafe to drive, and unfair for the owner to pay for this manufacturer flaw.

Purchased a 2020 Palisade in March of 2024 with 76k miles on it. Asked the dealership we bought it from to look at the transmission after a week of owning the car, they said it was fine. I took it to Hallmark Hyundai dealership on 9/26/24 and they would not look at it until i had the transmission fluid flushed this was at 88430 miles. It was barely making it up a hill, we had the gas pedal to the floor and it was pulling back like it was going to stall. I scheduled to have the transmission fluid flushed at a local certified mechanic and he found tons of metal shaving and chunks throughout the fluid this was done at 89368 miles. I took it to Wilson County Hyundai after this was done and they said I needed a full transmission replacement this was done at 89643. They replaced the transmission, and on my way home from picking the car up there was metal grinding sounds coming from the transmission. I called Wilson County back and they asked me to bring it back, it was back on their lot less than 24 hours later. The transmission that was sent from the manufacture was a faulty transmission. The replaced the new transmission, and the sound stopped this was done at 89730 miles. After a couple thousand miles the metal grinding came back, along with the hard shifting, gear skipping, excessive vibration between gears, going up in RPMs but not shifting. I took it Jim Johnson Hyundai and they reset the Transmission adaptive, this is not fix the problem this was done at 96497. It back in the dealership now at Wilson county with the mileage of 99000 and their service manager told me they have 5 of them on their lot right now needing new transmissions. The car has less than 100k miles on it.

The wind deflector for the sunroof malfunctioned while attempting to close the sunroof. The wind deflector became lodged in the track for the sunroof and broke which caused the sunroof to shift and not close fully. When researched online, this is a common occurrence with this year and model vehicle. It could potentially cause the glass to shatter above the drivers head and cause an accident. The sunroof would not fully close causing it to leak when it rained. The glass panel was removed and manually slid into the closed position to prevent further damage. Now the sunroof is inoperable. The vehicle can be inspected upon request. The issue has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer or anyone else. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure. we would like this issue to be resolved as it is a potential hazard.

Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a safety concern regarding my 2020 Hyundai Palisade. Recently, when I attempted to operate the sunroof, it only opened partially and made a crackling sound. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that some of the internal plastic components were breaking apart, and now the sunroof does not close properly. After researching this issue online, I discovered that numerous other owners are experiencing the exact same problem. For reference, here are a couple of user-reported discussions highlighting similar experiences: [XXX] [XXX] Additionally, I came across a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) related to this very issue, which can be found here: [XXX] However, when I checked my vehicle’s VIN, it did not appear to be included in the list of affected models, despite my vehicle exhibiting the same symptoms described in the bulletin. This leads me to believe that the scope of affected VINs may not have been fully identified. Given the number of similar complaints shared by other Hyundai Palisade owners, it appears this may be a more widespread issue than initially recognized. I respectfully request that NHTSA consider investigating this matter further, as it may help protect and support additional Hyundai customers who are dealing with this problem and have not yet been offered a resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Description of Incident: The engine in my 2020 Hyundai Palisade Limited failed and ultimately seized despite having been regularly maintained and receiving an oil change less than 3,000 miles prior to the failure. The component that failed was the engine, and according to the dealership, it is seized and no longer operable. The vehicle is currently at the dealership and available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: The failure posed a significant safety risk. The engine began shaking while the vehicle was in motion, creating a sudden loss of power and drivability. I pulled over immediately and discovered that the engine oil dipstick was dry. I added oil right away, but the engine shut down shortly after. The abrupt loss of engine function while driving could have led to a serious accident had I been in traffic or at highway speed. Reproduction / Confirmation: Yes, the issue was confirmed by Hyundai at Courtesy, a certified Hyundai dealership. They diagnosed the engine as seized and also confirmed that oil was present at the time of inspection, ruling out owner neglect. Inspections Conducted: The vehicle and failed component (engine) have been inspected by the dealership, who submitted a case to Hyundai. However, the case was denied for goodwill coverage despite the circumstances. The manufacturer has been notified but has not physically inspected the engine themselves beyond the dealership’s report. Warning Lamps or Symptoms: No Check Engine Light, oil pressure warning, or any dashboard message illuminated prior to or during the failure. The only symptom was engine shaking, which began just before the engine shut down. The oil loss occurred silently and without warning, making the issue especially dangerous and difficult to detect in time.

The driver side wiper stopped functioning during a rain storm. Fortunately, I was not on a major road and was able to navigate. If I had been on the highway, I would have been blinded and potentially in a major accident if not able to pull over expeditiously. This malfunction occurred approximately one year earlier and was corrected by the dealer at that time. I believe some Hyundai Palisades have had a recall for this issue in the past. I am concerned that this has recurred and not been fixed definitively. This issue has potential fatal consequences. I am taking the vehicle to the dealer tomorrow to address the issue. I cannot take it today as it is still raining and I would be placing myself and others at risk.

The primer on the entire car was not applied properly so the paint is not sticking, hence why the paint has peeled all the way down to the metal. ENGINE

I purchased a used 2020 Hyundai Palisade in June 2024. The vehicle has a defective engine caused by excessive oil consumption. I took the vehicle to the dealer service department and they confirmed the issue. A claim was made to Hynduai to replace the engine and it was denied. Not replacing the engine will further degrade the engine until it fails completely. Hyundai has been uncooperative is wanting to resolve the issue, even though is a commonly reported issue.

SUSPENSION

Rear suspension has failed. Back of car bounces on slightest of rough roads. Ride is very rough for passengers in back two rows. Driver and front passenger also experience bumpy ride that was not there before. When researching, this seems to be a common issue for Palisades with self leveling rear suspension. Car does not seem safe from bouncing due to rear suspension failure.

SEAT BELTS

The 2nd row seatbelt on the passenger side comes unlatched during vehicle movement. Often times it will not latch and secure the seatbelt when a passenger is in the seat. On numerous occasions it has come unbuckled or would not work at all as required. Hyundai service centers have been unable to recreate the problem during inspection, stating there is nothing wrong with the seatbelt and we need to make sure we latch it fully. The deficiency never seems to happen during inspection but happens when my children and adult passengers are in the seat.

My rear shocks and or insulator were replaced under a TSB 22-SS-001H at 50000 miles. At 79000 they are needing replaced again. I am told the TSB no longer applies since it is out of warranty. I see others having the same issue. Can Hyundai be held accountable for obviously replacing a defective part with another one?

SUSPENSION

In August of 2023, Stivers Hyundai located in Columbia, SC replaced the rear shock absorbers on my 2020 Hyundai Palisade Limited due to a rattling and knocking noise in the rear of the vehicle. The noise never completely went away, but was somewhat better. In July of 2024 the noise was back to the same noise as we were hearing in 2023. We took the vehicle to the dealership in August of 2024 complaining of the same noise previously heard. The dealership stated that we needed new shock absorbers (same as which they replaced a year ago) and which only had approx. 20,000 on them. When we explained that they had just replaced them a year ago, they completely dismissed our concern and noted that they needed to be replaced and offered no explanation as to why they would wear out in a years time. At the point we visited the dealership in 2024, the vehicle was no longer under warranty and we were quoted over $3,000 to fix the issue. In looking through other online forums, this appears to be a common issue with this vehicle. My thought is that there is an underlying issues that is causing this to happen that may not be addressed through simply replacing the rear shock absorbers. Maybe there is an issue causing the shock absorbers to wear out so quickly and that issue has not been identified. Nonetheless, shock absorbers should not wear out in 20,000 miles under normal (mostly interstate) diving conditions.

SEAT BELTS

Received attached letter, extending warranty for twisted seatbelts. When I contacted the dealer, they said they had to be a case where my seatbelt came unbuckled for them to replace the seatbelts in my second row of my Hyundai palisade. Here is my concern. there have been numerous complaints about seatbelts coming unbuckled while people were driving. I place my most precious cargo. My two great granddaughters in that second row buckled in with the seatbelts, anticipating that I have done everything possible to safeguard them. now Hyundai is telling me that unless something tragic happens they are not replacing them although they do point out that they are twisted due to excessive space in the D ring. If this is the case, why are they not replacing them now? Are they waiting for something tragic to happen.?? I want my second row seat belt to be replaced so I know my great granddaughters are safe when I place them in my vehicle. This is ridiculous that they issue the warning but no recall. Can you please help??

SEAT BELTS

Driver seatbelt will unbuckle or detach from buckle while driving. Multiple times it has happened where driving in dangerous conditions and the seatbelt will unbuckle while driving. Sometimes it will unbuckle itself quietly and I won’t notice it but the car will alert me to say it has been unlatched from the buckle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Palisade. The contact stated that while his wife was attempting to close the trunk manual, there was an electrical shock where her hand came in contact with the trunk. As a result, the contact's wife sustained a minor burn to her left hand. The contact was a physician who confirmed that his wife sustained a second-degree burn and treated his wife for the injury. The contact was able to wrap his wife's hand. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the diagnosis was unknown. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened a case. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 67,000.

SUSPENSION

Rear suspension with auto level function is not working properly. Rear is super stiff and bouncy ride over small imperfections on the road. Even with brand new tires it’s still an unpleasant ride. Rear passengers are not comfortable anymore.

SUSPENSION

The ride is extremely bumpy, especially for children in the back seats. Hyundai has replaced the shocks/struts twice with less than 20,000 miles on the car. They are apparently using the same part which is why they keep wearing out badly.

The seatbelt is unbuckling at random times, even when it is not tugged on and while driving. Drove 10-15 times and the buckle unlatched at least 6 times. Another driver of the same vehicle is also having problems. Dealer/mechanic cannot replicate the problem. No warning symptoms prior to it unbuckling.

The vehicle, a 2020 Hyundai Palisade SEL, was located in a closed garage, unoccupied. Within 10 minutes of parking the car in the garage, it caught on fire, possibly originating on the front, driver's side. Due to this incident occurring inside a garage, there was damage to our home and a high risk of safety (including loss of life) to the home and its occupants. At this time, we are waiting for the insurance company to investigate the origin of the fire as there were no warning lights or any indication of risk. This fire happened very suddenly and unexpectedly and it is our sincere hope that a thorough investigation will prevent this from happening to other families.

ENGINE

My 2020 Palisade engine burns oil at an alarming rate. I have to add about 4 quarts of oil every couple of thousand miles. This is a known issue with Hyundai engines. The problem started about a year ago. At that time my car had 98,000 miles on it. I reported the problem to Hyundai. They said they were too busy to see me at that time and the earliest they could look at my car was over a month out. By the time they got me in and looked at my car they said I was over the 100k mile warranty and there was nothing they could do. This is a known issue with thousands of Hyundai motors. Hyundai has failed to recall their faulty engines and do right by their customers.
