2020 HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC Complaints and Recall Information

The 2020 HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC has 1 complaint and 4 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to the 12 volt battery unexpectedly depleting despite the main battery being fully charged. One owner described repeated battery drain that left the vehicle undriveable until a fuse junction box assembly was replaced and the battery itself was replaced at no charge.

Common Issues

  • 12 Volt battery drain. The auxiliary battery repeatedly loses charge despite the main lithium-ion battery being fully charged, causing the vehicle to become inoperable.
  • Fuse box defect. Technicians identified a parasitic draw linked to fuses F6 and F16 that required installation of a junction box assembly to correct the electrical issue.
  • Battery damage. Continuous discharge from the 12 volt battery caused damage requiring replacement under warranty after the parasitic draw was fixed.

The vehicle has 4 recalls involving electrical systems and braking control. These recalls primarily affect the lithium-ion traction battery and software systems related to battery management and braking performance.

Recalls

  • Traction battery short-circuit (Recall 21V127000). This recall affects 4,696 vehicles. A short-circuit in the lithium-ion battery may cause a fire risk. Owners are advised to park outside away from structures until repairs are completed. Hyundai provides a battery update through the infotainment system as an interim fix followed by inspection and possible battery replacement at no cost.
  • Battery management software (Recall 20V630000). Applies to 6,707 vehicles. The Battery Management System software is updated to prevent short circuits in the lithium-ion battery that pose a fire hazard. Owners must park outside until repairs are done. The recall includes inspection and replacement if needed with no charge.
  • Traction battery defect (Duplicate of 20V630000). Also covers 6,707 vehicles with the same short-circuit risk and remedies, consolidated under the same recall number 196.
  • Electric brake control module software (Recall 20V748000). Affects 8,176 vehicles. Software may cause abnormal sensor signals leading to reduced braking power, increasing crash risk. Hyundai will update the Integrated Electronic Brake system software for free. Owners are not advised to park outside nor avoid driving during this recall.

Owners with repeated failures of the 12 volt electrical system or unresolved safety recalls should consider contacting a consumer protection attorney. Potential lemon law rights may apply where repeated repairs or safety defects diminish vehicle use or value.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

6/17/2024 12 volt battery was dead; EV was fully charged 6/16/2024 using Level 2 charger in my home garage. AAA charged the battery; I drove to Crossroads Hyundai Loveland, CO and asked to have the converter to the main battery checked; this was not done. Crossroads checked the battery via CADEX with "good battery charge" as result. No other diagnostic work was performed. 8/26/2024 12 volt battery again depleted; AAA charged twice 11:06 am (recharge and retest ) and 3:51pm (Bad & replace). I drove again to Crossroads Hyundai which claimed battery test showed good battery. Technician found a draw dropped after pulling fuses F6 multi media and F16 memory. Techline at Hyundai was contacted and tech was instructed to install junction box for fuses (91950-K4061 Junction Box assembly I/PNL 91). The car was undriveable on the Crossroads lot until part received and replaced 9/20/2024. 9/24/2024 when I arrived to pick up the car, the service advisor told me the door was left ajar after car wash, causing draw on battery; the battery was damaged by continued discharge due to strain from parts replaced. Hyundai agreed to replace the battery at no charge to customer. There were no warming lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to 6/17/2024. My safety, as a senior and woman is at risk if the car was stranded in a parking lot or other area outside of my home garage.
