2019 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC Complaints and Recall Information

The 2019 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC has 5 complaints and 2 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report transmission issues causing the vehicle to become stuck in electric vehicle mode, leading to loss of acceleration and the need for towing. There are also repeated reports of the instrument cluster turning off or rebooting while driving, affecting visibility of speed and warning indicators.

Common Issues
  • Transmission failure. The transmission drives rough and the vehicle gets stuck in EV mode, preventing return to hybrid mode. After battery depletion, acceleration is lost and the vehicle becomes immobile, requiring towing.
  • Engine clutch actuator defect. Failure of the engine clutch actuator causes transmission damage and leaves drivers stranded.
  • Instrument cluster intermittent shutdown. The digital speed display and other dashboard indicators randomly turn off while driving, especially in warm weather or after sun exposure.
  • Cluster reboot and blank screens. The instrument panel reboots with startup sounds or remains blank for several minutes, disrupting access to speed, gear, and warning lights.
  • Safety risk from cluster failure. Loss of critical driving information forces drivers to pull over multiple times to avoid unsafe driving conditions.

There are two recalls that address electrical system defects impacting propulsion and software control. Both recalls affect the vehicle’s ability to maintain stable acceleration and power.

Recalls
  • Electrical ground defect. NHTSA recall 21V944000 affects 2679 vehicles. An unstable electrical ground may cause the car to enter a fail-safe mode with reduced acceleration and power. Under certain conditions, the vehicle may accelerate unexpectedly after the gas pedal is released, increasing crash risk. Dealers will update EPCU software and repair ground wiring at no charge.
  • Software update required. NHTSA recall 21V944000 also requires updating the Electric Power Control Unit software in the same 2679 vehicles. The fix includes the software update and ground wiring repair to prevent fail-safe mode and unexpected acceleration. No "Do Not Drive" advisory was issued.

Owners facing repeated transmission or cluster failures, safety-related malfunctions, or unresolved recall repairs may want to explore their rights under state lemon laws. Acting through legal channels might help resolve persistent defects or inadequate warranty coverage.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Ioniq electric vehicles. An unstable electrical ground may cause the vehicle to enter a fail-safe mode with reduced acceleration and power. In certain conditions while in fail-safe mode, the vehicle may accelerate after the gas pedal is released.

Risk: Unexpected acceleration following gas pedal release can increase the risk of a crash.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

The instrument cluster (digital speed display) on my 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Limited has repeatedly turned off while driving. This issue happens randomly, especially in warm weather or after the car has been sitting in the sun. Sometimes the cluster reboots (I hear the start-up chime, the display shows the headlight icon, etc.), other times it remains blank for several minutes. This affects the ability to see speed, gear, and warning indicators, posing a serious safety risk. I’ve had to pull over multiple times because I couldn’t see how fast I was driving. Turning the car off and on sometimes resets it, but the issue returns. I am not the only one experiencing this. Other Hyundai owners across multiple models and years have documented the same or similar problems, including: 2024–2025 Hyundai Santa Fe (cluster and HUD flicker, total blackout) 2025 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited (cluster goes blank within 3 days of ownership) 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz (cluster resets while driving) Hyundai Ioniq 5 (cluster flickers, reboots mid-drive, sometimes blanks) 2022–2023 Hyundai Palisade (recall #217 for illegible or blank cluster) These reports appear across NHTSA, Reddit, IoniqForum, TucsonForum, and Hyundai Santa Fe and Genesis forums. Some owners had to replace their entire cluster or HUD; others received full vehicle replacements after failed repairs. Hyundai should investigate this as a pattern defect in digital instrument clusters across multiple product lines. I am submitting this to protect future drivers and urge NHTSA to act.

POWER TRAIN

While driving the transmission started driving rough and the car was stuck in ev mode. Wouldnt even go back to hybrid mode. I kept driving until all my battery range was exhausted and lost acceleration and had to pull over the side of the highway. It was late at night so there was no one around or behind me, otherwise I would have been hit. Once stopped the car would not move at all so I called a tow to get me off the highway. I was away from home and had to tow it 120 miles back to the local dealer. The engine clutch actuator failed and ruined my transmission and left me stranded in the middle of the night!
