2003 HONDA PILOT Complaints and Recall Information
The 2003 HONDA PILOT has 7 complaints and 11 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report water leaking into the front floors soaking the carpet and fuse panels, which causes electrical shorts and raises fire hazards. Other common complaints involve power steering fluid loss causing steering difficulties, random engine stalling traced to a faulty fuel pump relay, and gear shifting failures accompanied by check engine lights.
Common Issues- Water intrusion. Water leaks into the front floor area soaking carpet and fuse panels, leading to electrical shorts and potential fire risk.
- Electrical shorts risk. Standing water builds behind fuse boxes, causing damage to the electrical system and battery failure.
- Power steering failure. Power steering fluid loss results in hard steering and noise, with fluid contacting hot engine areas.
- Engine stalling. Random engine stalls occur after short drives; issue traced to a failing PGM-FI fuel pump relay under the driver’s dash.
- Gear shifting failure. The vehicle fails to shift into gear properly during startup and triggers the check engine warning light.
There are 11 recalls affecting various systems on the 2003 Honda Pilot, including exterior lighting, electrical ignition switches, and multiple air bag inflator defects related to Takata air bag inflators. These recalls address safety defects that could impact visibility, vehicle rollaway risks, and air bag deployment hazards.
Recalls- Headlight switch wiring (Recall 12V136000). Affecting 1,375,217 vehicles. Worn electrical terminals in the combination switch wiring harness may melt, causing low beam headlights to fail and reducing visibility risk. Dealers repair or replace the wiring harness or lighting switch free of charge.
- Ignition switch interlock (Recall 12V573000). 807,161 vehicles recalled. The interlock lever may deform allowing key removal without shifting to park, increasing vehicle rollaway crash risk. Dealers install updated interlock lever or replace ignition switch as needed at no cost.
- Takata passenger air bag inflator (Recall 14V353000). 133,207 vehicles. Inflator may rupture and expel metal fragments upon deployment, causing serious injury or death. Dealers will replace the inflators free of charge.
- Takata passenger air bag inflator regional (Recall 14V700000). Zero vehicles affected but includes regions of high humidity. Inflator rupture risk similar to 14V353000. Free replacements offered in affected areas.
- Driver air bag inflator (Recall 15V320000). 6,281,043 vehicles. Moisture intrusion may cause inflator rupture with fatal risk. Owners notified for free inflator replacement. This recall supersedes prior Takata driver air bag recalls.
- Passenger air bag inflator (Recall 15V370000). 3,498,481 vehicles. Moisture intrusion may cause inflator rupture with possible fatal injury. Dealers replace inflators free of charge.
- Driver air bag inflator (Recall 19V499000). 3,947 vehicles. Previously replaced inflators may explode due to propellant degradation, risking injury or death from metal fragments. Dealers perform free replacements.
- Driver air bag inflator manufacturing defect (Recall 19V182000). 1,101,534 vehicles. Faulty replacement inflators may explode on deployment risking occupant injury or death. Free replacement of driver air bag inflators with alternate parts provided.
- Passenger air bag inflator replacement (Recall 19V501000). 1,657,752 vehicles. Propellant degradation can cause inflator explosions, risking serious injury or death. Dealers replace inflators at no cost.
- Passenger air bag installation (Recall 18V268000). 1,335 vehicles. Incorrect installation during replacement may cause improper deployment and increased injury risk. Dealers inspect and replace modules as needed free of charge.
- Passenger air bag inflator rupture risk (Recall 16V344000). 1,790,894 vehicles. Degraded propellant may cause inflator rupture during deployment resulting in injury or death. Owners notified and free replacements offered.
Owners facing repeated repairs, stalling, water leaks causing electrical shorts, or unresolved safety recall issues may want to review their state’s lemon law protections. Persistent safety hazards and repeated defects should be reported to appropriate agencies and legal counsel.

Honda is recalling certain model year 2003 and 2004 Pilot and Odyssey and 2003 through 2006 Acura MDX passenger vehicles manufactured from November 26, 2001, through August 30, 2006. The interlock lever of the ignition switch may deform, which can allow the interlock function of a vehicle with an automatic transmission to be defeated.
Risk: Removal of the ignition key when the gear selector of a vehicle with an automatic transmission has not been shifted to the park position can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2002 THROUGH 2004 CR-V; MODEL YEAR 2003 THROUGH 2005 PILOT; AND MODEL YEAR 2002 AND 2003 CIVIC VEHICLES. IN MARCH 2012, HONDA FILED A DEFECT REPORT TO RECALL CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2002 THROUGH 2004 CR-V AND CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2003 PILOT VEHICLES. IN AUGUST 2012, HONDA INFORMED THE AGENCY THAT IT WAS INCLUDING AN ADDITIONAL 820,789 VEHICLES INCLUDING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 AND 2005 PILOTS AND MODEL YEAR 2002 AND 2003 CIVICS. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF VEHICLES BEING RECALLED IS NOW 1,375,217. DUE TO TENSION FROM THE COMBINATION SWITCH WIRING HARNESS, WEAR ON THE SURFACE OF THE ELECTRICAL TERMINAL CAN OCCUR, YIELDING COPPER OXIDE, WHICH INCREASES ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE. INCREASED ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE MAY CAUSE THE TERMINAL ENDS TO MELT WITHIN THE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR.
Risk: IF THE TERMINAL ENDS MELT WITHIN THE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR, THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS MAY BECOME INOPERATIVE, REDUCING DRIVER VISIBILITY AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Reporting an important safety issue I experienced due to random engine stalling on my 2003 Honda Pilot, typically after driving for a few minutes. The engine would crank for several seconds or sometimes start immediately after stalling, but no diagnostic trouble codes were ever stored. The vehicle had stable fuel trims and idle, and multiple components including the EGR valve and valve clearance were serviced without resolving the issue. Ultimately, the root cause was traced to a failing PGM-FI (fuel pump) relay located under the driver’s dash. After replacing the relay close to two months ago, the stalling stopped completely. This issue could pose a safety risk if the engine stalls in traffic, especially in a hazardous area where there’s no breakdown lane (construction zone, etc.) , and I believe this factor should consider this a known failure point in aging vehicles of this model. Attached are two images of the new relay zip tied under the driver’s footwell (could not remove the bad relay since it was too difficult to remove from its bracket).

Water leaked into front floors of vehicle soaking the carpet and the fuse panels in the floor. Yes it is available. Fuse boxes had standing water building up behind them slowly dumping water into them causing shorts in electrical system which could have caused the car to catch on fire. Yes the problem has been confirmed. No the vehicle has not been inspected by anyone other than mechanic. The only signs of the problem I noticed was the carpet was soaked and couldn't understand why. The battery died randomly one night after locking the doors. No other signs were noted.
