2023 HONDA PASSPORT Complaints and Recall Information

The 2023 HONDA PASSPORT has 7 complaints and 12 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most often report issues related to tire tread separation, unexpected vehicle rolling when in Park, sluggish acceleration, and transmission rolling on inclines. Some complaints describe safety concerns and unexpected vehicle behavior without warning alerts.

Common Issues

  • Tire tread separation. One owner reported tire tread separating at about 34,000 miles with premature wear, with the dealer declining to report the defect to the tire manufacturer.
  • Unexpected vehicle rolling. A vehicle rolled forward despite being in Park with the door open and seatbelt off, causing the driver to fall. No warning lights or error codes appeared, and the dealer found no faults during inspection.
  • Sluggish acceleration. Several owners noted delays in acceleration and strange sounds during acceleration attempts.
  • Automatic brake engagement. The automatic braking system applied brakes without obstacles detected while driving, causing safety concerns.
  • Starting issues. Vehicles occasionally failed to start when the ignition button was pressed with no apparent cause.
  • Transmission roll-back and roll-forward. Vehicles roll freely on inclines when in drive or reverse, presenting a hazard, especially to small children or animals. Dealers tested other vehicles and claimed this was normal for electronic transmissions but added a fix button on later models.

Twelve recalls affect the 2023 HONDA PASSPORT, involving critical systems such as fuel system components, steering, brakes, and rearview camera functionality. These recalls address defects that increase fire risk, loss of steering control, braking failure, and impaired rear visibility.

Recalls

  • Fuel system defect. (NHTSA 24V900000) Approximately 205,760 vehicles are affected by a possible separation of the fuel filler neck tube and pipe that may cause fuel leakage and fire risk. Dealers will inspect and repair the fuel filler components at no cost.
  • Steering gearbox issue. (NHTSA 24V184000) About 245 vehicles have a defect where the inner ball joint housing may loosen and detach, risking loss of steering control. Dealers will inspect and replace the steering gearbox if needed for free.
  • Brake master cylinder separation. (NHTSA 23V458000) Over 124,000 vehicles risk brake master cylinder separation from the booster due to an assembly error, potentially causing brake failure. Dealers will inspect and repair the brake booster assembly at no cost.
  • Rearview camera malfunction. (NHTSA 23V431000) More than 1.2 million vehicles may experience rearview camera display failure due to a faulty cable connector, reducing rear visibility and increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace cables and install protective covers free of charge.

Owners with repeated repairs related to safety defects or ongoing recall issues might have protections under state lemon laws. Those affected should consider their rights when defects remain unresolved despite multiple attempts at repair.

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Passport and 2023-2025 Pilot vehicles. The fuel filler neck tube and fuel filler pipe may separate, allowing fuel to leak.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

The tie rod fastener that connects the brake booster and the brake master cylinder may have been improperly assembled during manufacturing, which can cause the brake master cylinder to separate from the booster assembly.

Risk: Brake master cylinder separation can cause a loss of brake function and increase the risk of a crash.

BACK OVER PREVENTION:DISPLAY FUNCTION

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2023 Odyssey, 2019-2022 Pilot, and 2019-2023 Passport vehicles. Due to a faulty Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) communication coaxial cable connector, the rearview camera image may not appear on the display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

Risk: A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

SERVICE BRAKES

On 11 Apr 2025, I was driving my 2023 Honda Passport at night on a toll road in clear weather when my infant son began screaming in distress. I pulled over onto the shoulder, partially onto a dirt area with bushes for more space. I pressed the “Park” button, unbuckled my seatbelt, and opened the driver door to step out. As I did, the vehicle suddenly began rolling forward despite being in Park with the door open and the seatbelt off. I fell trying to exit and had to roll away from the vehicle as it continued moving. A passenger jumped into the front seat and stopped it. This wasn’t a lurch or slight movement the car rolled enough to put me in danger. It behaved as if it were in Neutral, not Park. I later tested the same conditions (engine running, door open, seatbelt off), and the vehicle auto-shifted to Park as designed. This confirms the safety feature failed in that moment. No warning lights, alerts, or error messages appeared before or during the incident. I reported the issue to Honda and asked the dealer to inspect the transmission and interlock systems. No faults or diagnostic codes were found. The service advisor said Park can take a second to engage, but the movement I experienced was excessive and unsafe. This is a serious safety concern, especially with children in the car. I’ve also seen other reports of similar issues in Passport and Pilot forums. I have manageable scrapes and a joint effusion in my knee

TIRES

Tread separation on one of the tires at approximately 34K miles of driving and premature tread wear. 2023 Honda Passport, bought new from Classic Honda in Orlando Florida. Dealer wouldn't report it to Continental Tires and quoted me to install 2 new tires from the same brand (Continental) and after charging me alignment (that didn't solve the problem on my first visit).
