2021 HONDA INSIGHT Complaints and Recall Information

The 2021 HONDA INSIGHT has 3 complaints and 23 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the automatic emergency braking system activating without an apparent cause. Several reports describe the forward collision warning system triggering the "BRAKE" warning light when cresting steep rises in the road.

Common Issues
  • Unintended braking activation. The collision mitigation braking system has engaged unexpectedly on quiet and straight streets with no visible obstacles.
  • False forward collision warnings. The system triggers brake warnings when cresting hills despite no nearby vehicles or hazards.
  • Automatic emergency braking faults. Owners report the system activating with no reason on multiple occasions, causing sudden braking without driver input.

There are 23 recalls for the 2021 HONDA INSIGHT affecting various vehicle systems. These recalls address defects related to occupant classification sensors, electrical and propulsion systems, and safety-related components.

Recalls
  • Occupant classification sensor. (NHTSA Recall 24V064000) Affects 750,114 vehicles. The front passenger seat weight sensor may crack and short circuit, failing to suppress the air bag as intended. This increases the risk of injury from unintended air bag deployment. Dealers will replace the seat weight sensors free of charge. Owner notifications began in March 2024. No "Do Not Drive" or "Park Outside" advisory.
  • DC-DC converter failure. (NHTSA Recall 20V798000) Affects 27,838 vehicles. The converter may shut down and prevent the 12-volt battery from recharging, causing loss of drive power which increases the risk of a crash. Dealers will update the power converter unit software free of charge. Recall started February 2021. No "Do Not Drive" or "Park Outside" advisory.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs, safety defects, or unresolved recall issues may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting with a qualified attorney can help clarify those rights.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

On two (2) occasions, the "collision mitigation braking system" braked with no reason. It has happened on a quiet and straight line residential street with no other moving vehicle, pedestrian, animal, or any other obstruction in view. After one second or so of braking, it returned to normal. It is available for inspection. I have not spoken to the local Honda dealer about it, and there were no adverser repercussions. There were no prior warnings of any system malfunction.
