2006 HONDA ELEMENT Complaints and Recall Information

The 2006 HONDA ELEMENT has 2 complaints and 8 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to air bag deployment and rear trailing arm rust. One complaint involves the passenger side air bag deploying unexpectedly at highway speed without warning lights. Another complaint highlights severe rust on rear trailing arms, with concern over the lack of a U.S. recall despite a similar Canadian recall.

Common Issues

  • Unexpected air bag deployment. Passenger side air bag deployed at 70 MPH without prior warning or impact, requiring air bag system replacement.
  • Rear trailing arm rust. Rust damage reported on rear trailing arms, with no recall coverage in the U.S. despite a related Canadian recall.

There are 8 recalls affecting various systems on the 2006 Honda Element. These involve powertrain control modules and multiple air bag inflators for both driver and passenger sides. The recalls mainly address potential air bag inflator ruptures and transmission control software updates to prevent engine stalls and unintended vehicle movement.

Recalls

  • Transmission control module (11V395000). Affects 1,512,107 vehicles. Outer race of the secondary shaft bearing may break causing abnormal noise, engine stall, or vehicle roll after placing gear in park. Risk of crash or injury. Dealers will update transmission control module software free of charge.
  • Driver air bag inflator (15V320000). Affects 6,281,043 vehicles. Inflator can rupture due to moisture intrusion, risking metal fragments causing serious injury or death. Dealers will replace inflator free of charge starting July 1, 2015.
  • Driver air bag inflator replacement (19V499000). In 3,947 vehicles, replaced inflators may explode from propellant degradation, risking occupant injury. Dealers will replace inflator at no cost starting August 12, 2019.
  • Driver air bag inflator (19V182000). Over 1,101,534 vehicles affected. Inflators with a manufacturing error may explode on deployment. Replacement inflator provided free of charge starting April 10, 2019.
  • Passenger air bag inflator Zone A/B and other regions (16V344000). 1,790,894 vehicles may have inflators that rupture due to propellant degradation. Risk of metal fragments causing injury or death. Free replacement started June 27, 2016.
  • Passenger air bag inflator Zone A/B and other regions (17V029000). 308,884 vehicles affected. Inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation. Dealers replace inflators free of charge from March 2017.
  • Passenger air bag inflator replacement (19V501000). 1,657,752 vehicles with replaced inflators that may explode due to propellant degradation. Metal fragment risk. Free remedy began August 12, 2019.
  • Passenger air bag module assembly (18V268000). 1,335 vehicles possibly received incorrectly installed passenger air bags, increasing risk of improper deployment. Dealers will inspect and replace module assembly if needed free of charge starting June 22, 2018.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:CONTROL MODULE (TCM/PCM/TECM)

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 ACCORD, 2007-2010 CR-V, AND 2005-2008 ELEMENT PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 1, 2004, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3, 2010. THE OUTER RACE OF THE SECONDARY SHAFT BEARING MAY BE BROKEN DURING CERTAIN DRIVING STYLES. A BROKEN OUTER RACE MAY CAUSE ABNORMAL NOISE, THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO TURN ON, AND ALLOW CONTACT BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION IDLE GEAR AND AN ELECTRONIC SENSOR HOUSING WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION.

Risk: THIS COULD RESULT IN A SHORT CIRCUIT CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. ADDITIONALLY, BROKEN PIECES OF THE OUTER RACE OR BALL BEARING FROM THE SECONDARY SHAFT MAY BECOME LODGED IN THE PARKING PAWL RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AFTER THE DRIVER HAS PLACED THE GEAR SELECTOR IN THE PARK POSITION. ENGINE STALL AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO PERSONS WITHIN THE PATH OF A ROLLING VEHICLE.

SUSPENSION

I live in Minnesota and my Elements rear trailing arms are badly rusted. There is a recall for the same issue in Canada but not in the US. This is my 2006 Honda Element with 96k miles. I would love to be able to get another at least 100k miles if not lots more. These cars can go to 400k if maintained well.

There was no impact GTC system scanned -1 completed troubleshooting found no damage while SRS and air bag unit need to be replaced. The vehicle had previously been repaired, a year and a half prior to the failure under an unknown recall associated with the air bags. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 155,500.
