2015 HONDA CR-V Complaints and Recall Information

The 2015 HONDA CR-V has 18 complaints and 36 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners frequently report issues related to engine stalling and hesitation, unexpected battery drain, and automatic braking system malfunctions. Several complaints also involve sudden loss of power and transmission failure, as well as problems with the door handle sensor causing battery drain.

Common Issues
  • Engine stalling. Reports describe the vehicle stalling during acceleration from a stop or hesitation while pressing the accelerator, creating unsafe driving conditions.
  • Battery drain. The door handle sensor reportedly causes continuous battery drain, sometimes damaging the door panel and requiring repeated battery replacements.
  • Transmission failure. Sudden loss of acceleration due to complete internal failure of the CVT transmission was reported, occurring without warning lights or error codes.
  • Automatic braking malfunction. The automatic braking system activates unexpectedly at low speeds, sometimes causing the vehicle to seize up unexpectedly, yet fails to activate in other necessary situations.
  • Unresponsive start. Intermittent no-start conditions occurred, with some owners noting temporary repair after starter or connector replacements before the issue returns.
  • Instrument panel alerts. Multiple warning lights including Check Engine, TPMS, VAS, and EPS illuminate and turn off intermittently after driving.
  • Brake failure. Brake and rotor freezing caused delayed stopping and accident risk; other brake system leaks were also reported.
  • Odometer discrepancies. Two cases involved significant mileage inconsistencies discovered during vehicle registration, suggesting odometer tampering.
  • Unsafe door lock operation. Door locks unlock automatically after being locked using the door handle button, with the sensor remaining active until the battery dies.
  • Excessive component wear. Valve cover gasket replacements were noted multiple times with concern over lack of recall action.

The vehicle has 36 recalls affecting multiple systems including the fuel delivery, engine components, and engine cooling. These recalls cover a wide range of issues from fuel pump failures to engine assembly defects that may cause stalls or risk of fire.

Recalls
  • Fuel pump failure. (NHTSA 23V858000) Approximately 2,490,460 vehicles including the 2015 CR-V are affected by fuel pump module failures. The defect may cause engine stalls while driving, increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace the fuel pump module free of charge. There is no do-not-drive or park-outside advisory.
  • Replacement engine defect. (NHTSA 17V305000) Sixteen 2015-2016 CR-Vs that received replacement engines may have incorrect pistons, reducing engine performance and possibly causing stalls. Dealers will inspect and replace faulty parts for free. No do-not-drive advisory.
  • Connecting rod bolt torque issue. (NHTSA 15V121000) One hundred thirty-seven 2015 CR-Vs assembled with improperly torqued connecting rod bolts risk engine power loss or oil leaks near hot components, increasing stall and fire risk. Dealers will replace the engine short block at no cost. No do-not-drive advisory.

Owners facing repeated stalling, battery drain, or sudden power loss combined with unresolved recall issues may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Prompt attention to these concerns is advised to protect safety and vehicle reliability.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

On 8/14, As I was pulling away from a gas pump and into a parking space (going 5 mph or less), the automatic braking system alarms went off, and the brakes applied, causing the car to seize up completely. My foot was already on the brake and I was at least 5 feet away from the barrier at the end of the parking spot. In addition to this experience, the emergency braking alarms tend to go off in unexpected/unneeded situations, such as when I'm coasting to a red light with my foot already on the brake. And it does NOT go off in other situations where I would expect it, such as when a car stops short in front of me. These situations happen approximately once every two months or so. The automatic/emergency braking is unreliable, unpredictable and when it engages unnecessarily, could be dangerous.

Crash

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

While driving at normal speed, the vehicle suddenly began to shudder and produce unusual mechanical noise. Within seconds, the car lost all ability to accelerate despite pressing the gas pedal. The vehicle lost power in live traffic and had to be coasted to the side of the road. There were no warning lights, no error codes, and no fluid leaks. This was a sudden, dangerous failure. A family member who is a new driver was operating the vehicle at the time, with passengers on board. This created a serious safety risk to both my family and surrounding drivers. The situation could have resulted in a serious accident if it had occurred on a highway instead of a city street. The problem was diagnosed by a trusted independent repair shop as a complete internal failure of the CVT transmission. They confirmed the component failure occurred without any external damage or signs of neglect. The transmission had to be replaced at significant cost. The component has not been inspected by Honda. However, I have dashcam video showing the moment of failure, including the vehicle shuddering, power loss, and driver reaction. The video clearly shows the dangerous nature of the incident and is available for inspection upon request. To my knowledge, this is a known issue affecting this generation of Honda CR-Vs with CVT transmissions. Honda refused reimbursement assistance despite full documentation, citing the vehicle being out of warranty — even though this is the type of premature mechanical failure their Goodwill Assistance policy is supposed to address. No warning lamps, messages, or prior symptoms appeared before the failure.

the car intermittently will not start. I had the starter replaced and that fixed the problem for a little while now it is back. My mechanic cleaned all the connectors and replaced them which worked for a couple of days now it intermittently will not start again. This seems to be a known problem with the 2015 CRV. Why isn't Honda addressing the issue?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The contact owns a 2015 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that since owning the vehicle, the battery had been replaced four times. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitated while pressing the START/STOP button. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle occasionally shut off while accelerating, forcing the contact to have the vehicle jump-started. The contact replaced the battery; however, the failure returned approximately a year later. The contact called several dealers and was informed that there were no recalls on the VIN. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system that caused the battery to continuously drain even while the vehicle was off. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to file a complaint. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 137,000.

MY BATTERY KEEPS RUNNING DOWN, EVEN AFTER I HAD IT REPLACED BY AAA. TOOK IT TO KINGSPORT HONDA AND HAD IT CHECKED OUT. THEY SAID IT WAS THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR HANDLE THAT WAS DRAWING DOWN THE BATTERY. THEY ALREADY KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, BUT TO MAKE SURE THEY PUT A METER ON IT. THE HANDEL HAS GOTTEN SO HOT IT HAS VISIBALY DAMAGED THE INSIDE DOOR PANEL. THEY ONLY WANT 795.00 TO REPLACE THE HANDLE. SOUNDS LIKE A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM. THIS IS VERY UNSAFE

My mechanic has said that they have replaced many valve cover gaskets on Hondas and they’re not sure why there has not been a recall. They’ve been keeping an eye on mine but now it’s time to get it replaced. I need to know why there has not been a recall.

Vehicle stalls while accelerating from a stop. I have had it checked out with a mechanic but he could diagnose the cause. I take great care when especially making a left turn. When the vehicle stalls I have to gently accelerate so it won’t shut down. Very unsafe. Has been occurring for the last 2 years.
