2018 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FLDE Complaints and Recall Information

The 2018 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FLDE has 2 complaints and 3 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report failures of the rear shock adjuster bolt, resulting in multiple repairs over several years. Repeated breakage of this component has caused damage to the rear fender and posed safety risks while riding.

Common Issues

  • Rear shock adjuster bolt failure. The bolt breaks repeatedly causing the rear shock absorber adjuster to become detached and damage the rear tire and fender. This defect has led to sudden loud noises and potential loss of vehicle control.
  • Multiple repairs required. Owners report having the same shock adjuster bolt repaired four times between 2018 and 2025 without lasting resolution.
  • Safety risks while riding. Complaints include experiencing a loud bang and concern over potential crashes or injury as a result of the rear shock adjuster failure.

Three recalls address issues related to the rear shock absorber and its mounting hardware. These recalls involve components that may break and cause damage to the rear tire, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall remedies focus on replacing or upgrading defective parts to prevent tire damage.

Recalls

  • Rear shock absorber mounting tab. NHTSA recall 25V375000 affects 82,117 vehicles. The mounting tab on the rear shock pre-load adjuster may break, allowing the shock adjuster to damage the rear tire and cause loss of tire pressure. This creates a risk of a crash. Dealers will install a new bracket at no charge. Owner notification began June 16, 2025. Some vehicles previously repaired under recall 23V591 require this updated fix.
  • Rear shock absorber fastener. NHTSA recall 23V591000 covers 65,224 vehicles. A fastener securing the rear shock absorber may break, allowing the adjuster to damage the rear tire and cause loss of tire pressure. This defect increases crash risk due to potential loss of control. Dealers will replace the fastener free of charge. Owner notification was mailed September 8, 2023.

Owners facing repeated repairs or unresolved issues related to the rear shock adjuster and associated recalls may want to explore their rights under their state’s lemon law. Persistent safety defects and multiple failed repairs could entitle consumers to protections under those laws.

My 2018 Harley Softail was repaired .The rear shock adjuster bolt was broken 11/1/2018 at 1500 mile this was before the recalls. Then it was repaired again with the recall 2/6/24 it was broken again. My bike was then repaired again on 7/29/25 for the recall .It was broken at the time again. On 8/25/25 I was riding home I felt a large bang to the rear and thought I had been hit.I was going slow I was able to handle the bike.I pulled to the shoulder and realized it was the shock adjuster again.I took my bike to Harley 8/30 with all my paperwork.Where it is now.I can visibly see my rear fender is pushed it to the tire. This is 4X the same defect.I could have been killed.Wondering how many have been killed or hurt for this very defect??? That is why I'm filing this report and calling Harley.
