2022 GRAND DESIGN TRANSCEND Complaints and Recall Information
The 2022 GRAND DESIGN TRANSCEND has 3 complaints and 38 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report complete trailer brake system failures caused by improper assembly and frame failures at the axle shackle weld. Brake malfunctions resulted in loss of braking control while towing, accompanied by warning messages. Frame damage occurred during repairs, exposing potential safety hazards.
Common Issues
- Trailer brake failure. Complete loss of trailer braking occurred due to the use of 18-gauge wire instead of the required 14-gauge wire, causing insulation to melt and a short circuit.
- Incorrect wiring gauge. Grand Design assembled brake wiring with thinner wire than specified by Lippert manuals, contributing to system failure under high current draw from a faulty brake magnet.
- Frame failure at axle shackle. The frame around the rear right axle shackle weld fractured during dealership repairs, attributed to weld over-penetration weakening the joint.
- Brake warning alerts. Tow vehicle information centers displayed "trailer Brakes disconnected" messages concurrent with brake system failure and trailer sway while descending grades.
- Intermittent bad brake magnets. Right rear brake magnet drew excessive current, exacerbating wiring issues resulting in brake loss.
- Safety risk during towing. Brake failure and frame damage created difficult trailer control situations, narrowly avoiding multi-vehicle crashes.
There are 38 recalls related to multiple systems on the 2022 GRAND DESIGN TRANSCEND. Recalls involve LPG system fittings prone to leaks, electric awning fabric seams that may separate, and structural components associated with these issues. Dealers are required to inspect and repair or replace defective parts free of charge.
Recalls
- LPG quick disconnect fittings. NHTSA recall 24V861000 affects 30,435 vehicles due to cracked quick disconnects in the propane gas system that may leak gas and increase fire risk. Dealers will inspect and replace fittings as needed at no cost. This recall supersedes 22V308000.
- LPG quick disconnect fittings. NHTSA recall 22V308000 affected 34,021 vehicles for cracked propane quick disconnects causing potential gas leaks and fire hazards. Dealers replaced faulty fittings for free.
- Electric retractable awning fabric. NHTSA recall 22V603000 covers 8,150 vehicles with welded seams that can separate, possibly allowing the awning to drop unexpectedly and cause injury. Dealers will inspect, repair, or replace the awnings free of charge.
Owners facing repeated brake or frame repairs, or unresolved safety recalls involving gas leaks or awning malfunctions may want to review their rights under state lemon laws. Persistent defects affecting safety or vehicle operation should be addressed through appropriate legal channels.

STRUCTURE:BODY
Grand Design RV, LLC (Grand Design) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Momentum, Solitude, Imagine, Reflection, and Transcend travel trailers. The electric retractable awning has a welded seam on the fabric that may separate, potentially allowing the awning to drop beyond normal operation.
Risk: An awning that drops or extends beyond normal operation can increase the risk of injury.

1. Complete Trailer brake system failure due to incorrect wire gauge used during assembly at Grand Design. 2. Frame failure at axle shackle weld on Lippert frame due to over-penetration. While towing the trailer there was a message on the tow vehicle information center "trailer Brakes disconnected". All trailer breaking was lost while going down the Siskiyous. At that time the trailer began to sway and was difficult to maintain control due to the loss of trailer brakes. During assembly Grand Design used 18-gauge wire to connect the 14-gauge wire from the brake magnets and axle tube to the wire running through the trailer underbelly up to the Vehicle plug. Lippert brake installation manuals for 4 brake systems state to use at least 14-gauge wiring. These manuals are readily available on the Lippert website. The photos we have provided clearly show 18 gauge was used and its insulation had melted exposing the center conductor. Repair documentation from the dealership to fix the brakes indicated that the right rear magnet was intermittently bad drawing high current which would draw all the braking system current to that one assembly. This maximum current to one set of wiring caused the smaller 18-gauge wire to melt off its insulation which resulted in a hard short that prevented all braking at a very inopportune time. Had 14 gauge been used we would not have lost all braking to the trailer. During the brake wire repair at the dealership the frame around the RR axle shackle failed when the trailer was jacked up. It appears that the shackle attachment weld over-penetrated the frame ultimately causing a weak joint and lead to the frame failure. The frame failing around the shackle weld happening at the dealership instead of on the road is beyond lucky and avoided another very unsafe incident on the road. These two items happening at the same time almost resulted in a multi vehicle crash on I-5 southbound.
