2025 GRAND DESIGN MOMENTUM Complaints and Recall Information

The 2025 GRAND DESIGN MOMENTUM has 1 complaint and 9 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the trailer brake system and related electrical components, including a reported fire caused by shorting wires in the battery compartment. The complaint highlights a failure of the breakaway emergency brake to apply and subsequent thermal damage and fluid leaks resulting from the incident.

Common Issues

  • Brake system failure. The breakaway emergency brake does not engage when activated, leading to loss of trailer braking capability.
  • Electrical short and fire risk. Pulling the breakaway switch causes wires in the battery compartment to overheat and smoke, resulting in a fire that damages hydraulic lines and fluids near the power source.
  • Hydraulic fluid leaks. Damage to hydraulic lines from fire incidents causes fluid leakage inside the trailer compartments.
  • Safety system malfunction. Emergency braking and related safety mechanisms fail to respond as intended during critical situations.
  • Delayed manufacturer response. Difficulty obtaining timely repairs and parts authorization from the manufacturer following incidents has been reported.

NHTSA records show 9 recalls affecting various structural and safety components on the 2025 GRAND DESIGN MOMENTUM. The recalls primarily involve step assembly defects that could cause detachment leading to injury risks. These recalls target both removable exterior steps and interior step bases that inadequately support the step tread.

Recalls

  • Step assembly detachment. NHTSA Recall 25V281000 affects 121 units. Clip-on bracket mounting bolts may loosen causing steps to detach which increases injury risk. Dealers will inspect and repair affected steps free of charge.
  • Interior step tread failure. NHTSA Recall 24V916000 covers 508 vehicles. The interior step base does not adequately support the tread, causing it to potentially detach and create trip and fall hazards. Dealers will replace step risers and treads at no cost.
  • Flooring material defects. Same NHTSA Recall 24V916000 also addresses issues with the materials used in interior steps contributing to detachment risk. Repair involves replacing affected components free of charge.

Owners who face unresolved safety defects, repeated brake failures, or persistent recall-related repairs should consider reviewing their rights under applicable state lemon laws. Legal consultation may assist in addressing ongoing safety and repair challenges.

SERVICE BRAKES

Sudden loss of trailer brakes nearly caused me to rear end vehicle in front of me. The more concerning part is when I went to an RV dealer to disgnose, they pulled the break away emergency brake to test if brakes applied. They did not apply, however about 1 minute after the breakway was pulled the switch began to melt, then almost immediately there was smoke coming from inside the battery compartment and a fire was started by the power wires melting due to a short. The fire then damaged a hydralic line and hydralic fluid was leaking right next to the flame. Luckily we had a fire extinguisher handy and quickly disconnected the battery. Grand Design had an investigator come on site to survey the damage and interview the dealer and myself. I was told that pulling the breakaway cable will cause the wires to overheat and could start a fire. I might agree if it was left for a long period of time, but not in 1 munute. If this would have been an actual emergency situation where the traler disconnected while driving, the brakes would not have applied and I am sure would have burned completely as it would have taken more time to get access to the fire location. Being told that this is expected behavior makes me very nervous to continue to use this trailier as I beleive it could happen again. A letter was sent to Grand Design and I have yet to get a response and having difficulty getting them to approve the repair and send parts
