POWER TRAIN

At highway speed, in heavy traffic, and falling snow, the engine seized with sudden loss of power, including loss of brake and steering sensitivity. We were traveling downhill so, while avoiding other traffic and weather, maintained momentum to pull over to the side. We were stranded at night in snowy weather in remote Utah. It took hours to get towed to the nearest town, Fillmore, where the mechanic determined that the engine was seized and that no mechanic in the town could repair the issue. GM would not tow vehicle to our home, they would only tow to nearest dealership - which was farther away from our home (over 3 hours away). After repeated attempts with GM for tow assistance over the course of 13 days, we towed the vehicle to Salt Lake City, our home city at our own expense. The Dealer said 6 of 8 rod bushings were bad, ordered a new engine which took over 2 months to receive and install. Catastrophic event occurred [XXX], Time trying to get GM to tow vehicle, ending with our own expense 2/26/2025, Finally returned from dealership with new engine 5/1/2025 - 64 days from dealership receipt of vehicle - 77 days from catastrophic event. Continues to have electrical issues that affect controls like radio, ac/heat, start/stop. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

The driver-side headlight and turn signal on my 2022 GMC Yukon stopped functioning completely. This issue began before GM recall 22V‚Äë903 and worsened immediately after the recall repair was performed. The recall repair required three separate dealership visits because it was initially performed improperly, yet the problem was never fully resolved. During interactions with GM and the dealership, I was told the repair might involve a $600 part, but they could not guarantee that replacing it would fix the issue. It is unreasonable and unsafe for me to be expected to cover the cost of repairs for a problem that was caused or worsened by a recall repair performed incorrectly. The malfunction creates a serious safety hazard, as oncoming drivers cannot see my turn signals, and I nearly had an accident because of it. The problem has been confirmed by the dealership and documented in GM Case #74327012. Prior to complete failure, the driver-side turn signal and daytime running lights occasionally stayed on after shutting off the vehicle which I was told that was caused by the recall. The vehicle has been inspected by authorized GM dealerships multiple times, but the defect persists. The component is available for inspection upon request.

ENGINE

Nothing has yet failed, but my engine has consumed oil but is apparently within the GM standard of less than 1 quart in 2,000 miles. My vehicle is also involved in the GM loss of engine propulsion recall that I was notified of on 4/24, but a remedy for my vin is still not available. How can something that could lead to loss of engine function take this long to remedy?

SUSPENSION

I had a sudden catastrophic engine failure 3/13/25. I previously filled out an NHTSA report, but I would like to add to my case. My engine was towed to the dealership and replaced. 4/25/25 the check engine light started coming on intermittently again. The service suspension notification, replace the battery in your key fob notification (which was replaced in February), and the check engine light have been coming on intermittently since then. All of these things occurred prior to engine failure the first time. The dealership would not look at our vehicle again until our vin was called for the recall. 6/22/25 the suspension sensor was replaced and the recall “test” was done. 6/27/25 the service suspension light was back flashing and GM was unable to find any codes. 6/29/25 the check engine light was flashing again. I believe my vehicle is going to have another engine failure. GM did a multi-point “inspection” and says it is safe to drive.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

While driving on I-77 South near exit 3 Charlotte, NC -with no warning signals or indication the vehicle lost power and shut down as I was driving at a speed of 70 miles an hour on the highway, Fortunately I was able to struggle and pull off to the emergency lane of the highway. I tried several times to start vehicle with no success. The vehicle was towed to the dealership immediately. My major concern is that this year model "2022 "GMC has not been RECALLED. A very popular model that families rely on for travel on a daily basis. At 37,000 miles with NO warning this happened on a very busy highway that could have resulted in a major accident. I bought this vehicle for extended travel that involves mostly highway. This presents in my eyes a very serious safety hazard that has not been addressed by GMC for this model vehicle. I look forward to your prompt investigation on this very disturbing matter.

ENGINE

I recently purchased a used 2022 Yukon XL Denali (with 6.2 Engine). 8 days after purchase, I was pulling a boat trailer, when all of the sudden the vehicle lost power on I-80. The vehicle automatically shifted to Neutral. I was luckily able to get to the left lane and there happened to be an offramp right there that I was able to coast to and be off the freeway. I pushed the Park button and then tried to restart the engine. Then I noticed the check engine light was on. Nothing happened when I pushed the start button. I called a tow truck and could not get the vehicle out of Park. The tow truck operator had to pull the vehicle on to the flatbed with the rear wheels locked in Park. I got the vehicle taken to a dealer and they said the engine needed to be replaced. Luckily, the vehicle has just less than 60,000 miles so it is covered by GM's power train warranty. The is still with a dealer being fixed. Potentially in a week I will get the vehicle back. This is scary that there is NO warning and all of the sudden the engine stops working. GM has a real problem with the 6.2 engine failures.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

On two separate occasions the front windshield wipers have stopped functioning while driving in heavy rains. Seemingly the only way to resume the wipers working was to cycle through "rain sense" options in the vehicles settings menu and turn off and on the vehicle several times. Unclear if it was those actions or simply waiting that caused the problem to abate. Discussed the issue with our dealer when in for service but they advised that they have seen that problem before but don't know what causes it. There could be several issues but they cannot address unless they recreate the situation and it is so random that it is hard to do. There are some internet forums (one is linked below) where this problem is discussed so it is clearly not just our vehicle but some sort of design flaw. In any case, it is very, very dangerous. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The engine system (6.2L V8 L87) in my 2022 GMC Yukon XL failed due to a known manufacturer defect tied to NHTSA Campaign 25V-274. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The issue involves the risk of sudden loss of propulsion, which could result in a crash or injury to myself or others. This is a serious safety concern, and I do not feel safe operating the vehicle in its current condition. The defect has been acknowledged by GMC, but there is no remedy or repair currently available. I have contacted the selling dealership (Rick Hendrick Buick GMC, Duluth, GA) repeatedly for the past three weeks with no returned calls. I also contacted GMC corporate, who confirmed the recall but refused a buyback or replacement because no repair has occurred — even though a fix does not exist. They offered a loyalty voucher that does not come close to addressing the safety risk or impact. The problem has not yet been inspected by a dealer or manufacturer because there is no repair action to take at this time. No police, insurance, or third-party has reviewed the vehicle. There were no warning lights or messages prior to the issue — the problem was revealed when I looked up the VIN and learned of the active recall on the engine. I am requesting NHTSA’s support to ensure General Motors provides a replacement vehicle and compensation for this ongoing and unresolved safety hazard. I should not be placed in a position where I am expected to continue operating a vehicle with a known and dangerous defect that has no resolution in place.

Since purchase there has been a grinding noise when the vehicle is initially started up and put into reverse. I am worried that this is associated with the current engine recall that is on this vehicle. There is an increased risk associated with this vehicle as I am paralyzed and unable to exit the vehicle quickly, which is increased drastically when I have toddler and baby in vehicle. This risk comes from the reported 42 potential fires related to this recall in malfunctioning engines. There have been no warning lamps or indicators that have appeared to date.

Our car completely lost power were had to maneuver across 2 Lanes to get to the emergency lane it was very scary traffic was blowing horns and it was awful. We made it to the emergency lane and proceeded north at a creeping pace with engine making lots of noise. We made it to a hotel next to [XXX] we were in Savannah Georgia. We tried to contact the local GMC dealer but it was after hours so we stayed the night and next morning got a tow to Critz GMC. At Critz we were Informed our engine was beyond repair and needed replacement. They proceeded to offer me $10,000 on a trade in, said it would take 3 months to get a replacement engine so I called my dealer back home White Motors Roanoke Rapids NC and they advised it would take several months to get a new eng and they couldn't tow me in so I called David Towing and they said they would come get it for me in the next week. On [XXX] my spouse was 20 Miles West of Jamestown, ND on [XXX]. Our 2022 GMC suddenly lost power at interstate speed, shifted into neutral. My spouse was able to coast the vehicle to avoid traffic and drift to the shoulder of the road leaving her stranded on the shoulder of the interstate. Vehicle has been towed to nearest GM dealer and diagnosed the problem related to recent recall. GM has been less than helpful in this scenario. This has created an extremely frustrating issue as I am informed GM knew about this issue prior to issuing a recall which in turn resulted in unnecessary risk to myself and family. I saw a recall for the 6.2L GMC engine announced. I am wondering if its similar to the 5.3L GMC engine. I was on the way to canada from new jersey with my family where all of a sudden my car started shaking near rochester, i had asked and reported this to GMC and they said nothing they can do since it was out of warranty. I had to pay out of pocket for repair of my engine and it was a bent lifter on top of the piston. I am not sure how that happens. The dealership had indicated they are getting a lot of other vehicles with the same issue and engine problems Vehicle with a sticker price of 80k, then needing another 10k repair within 2 years of owning it.

I was driving down the highway at approximately 70mph and the vehicle began to lose power. It was then apparent that the engine was no longer on as the screen read “press start” to restart engine or something like that. I was in the left hand lane and had to navigate through traffic without power to the right hand shoulder. I barely made it off the road before the car stopped moving entirely. I had purchased the car only 19 days prior. I have 3 children living at home and was very fortunate that none of them were in the car with me, I had no warning of the failure.

As I was driving on the highway and the check engine light came on, few seconds later I started losing speed, I could not accelerate. The vehicle then put me into Neutral while I was still moving. I put my flashers on immediately as traffic was quickly coming up behind me. I was able to find a spot off the side of the highway to slowly pull over to. When I stopped it was still in Neutral. I put it into park. Engine was not running. I tried to start the engine again, but nothing would happen. Had to get a tow and have been told the motor needs replaced. The dealership has no timeline of when a motor will be available.

ENGINE

On 1/3/25 the engine in my 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali started making knocking noise while driving and then it happened again when turning on the engine. The check engine light came on, so I had the vehicle towed to the nearest GM dealership. When the dealership drained the oil they found metal shavings in the oil. The vehicle had roughly 44,000 miles on it at the time. This put my family and young children at risk as they were in the vehicle when this happened.

POWER TRAIN

While driving the transmission will slip/hard shift very aggressively causing the rear tires to lock up. This would happen at unpredictable speeds (anywhere between 10mph-65mph), this occurred for about 2 weeks before vehicle ever gave a code. VERY scary and dangerous especially if you are in traffic since it essentially "brake checks" those behind you. The last incident that finally provided a code occurred at 50 mph when the rear tires completely locked forcing the vehicle in park. Could no longer drive the vehicle after this. The error code states that a rear body valve is needed for the transmission which the dealer is unable to get and neither the dealer or manufacturer can provide any estimate of arrival. Has been in the shop for almost 2 months now waiting.

ENGINE

1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power while driving, which has been attributed to a blown fuse and an underlying engine failure. The dealership has confirmed that the engine needs to be repaired. The vehicle is currently at the dealership and is available for inspection upon request. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? My [XXX] son was driving the vehicle alone at night over a busy bridge when the car suddenly lost power without warning. He had to coast down the bridge in heavy traffic with limited control, putting himself and surrounding drivers at serious risk. Fortunately, he was able to pull over safely, but the situation could have easily led to a serious accident or injury. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the vehicle was towed to the dealership, where the issue has been diagnosed. They confirmed that the engine is damaged and requires repair. They also identified that the initial trigger may have been a blown fuse, which led to the complete engine failure. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? The vehicle is currently in the care of the dealership’s service department. It has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. No accident occurred, so no police report was filed. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? There were no prior warning lights or symptoms leading up to the failure. The oil had recently been changed, and no issues were reported during the service. The only warning that appeared was the transmission warning light, which came on simultaneously with the vehicle’s sudden power loss. Car consuming too much oil, engine oil very low every 2000 miles. GM claims that 2000 is acceptable but new oil should go to 4000 at the least. Will not do anything to the engine or pistons and claim that car has too many engine hours due to idling which I do not do. They are unwilling to fix this problem, been dealing with them for over a year and my warranty is about to expire. There are many complaints online about this same issue.

The check engine light would intermittently turn on since purchasing my brand new vehicle in 2022. The service center kept it for several weeks, but could not find a problem. They said it was a “bad batch of gas” the first time I brought it in. The second time they said it was an engine misfire. They said as long as the light flashes but doesn’t stay on, it is not concerning. March 13, 2025 as I was driving my car down the road my car suddenly shifted to neutral. I had to coast to the side of the road (with my children in the car). I turned my car off and it would not turn back on. I had it towed to the dealership and they said the engine had failed. They replaced it, but could not tell me if they replaced it with the same version engine or not. The dealership did not supply any paperwork of the repair when I picked up my vehicle.

The car all of a sudden started making wired noises during idling. While driving it would click and start shaking. Took it to a GM service center. They diagnosed as a flywheel. During that process, they found "large parts" of metal in the oil and found a rod barring failed. They are now replacing the entire engine.

I was driving my 3 children to a basketball tournament. I was going about 70 mph on the highway when my dash started flashing "Engine Oil Hot", a few seconds later my vehicle completely "shut off/died". I merged over to the shoulder of the highway and tried to restart my vehicle, yet it just "clicked" and seemed to be "dead". The safety of myself and my 3 children were at risk, being stranded on the side of the highway far from home waiting for the tow truck. To say I was scared is an understatement, there was no warning signs so I could prepare for this. My vehicle was towed into a dealership, later that week I received a call saying I will need a new engine. I was told this could take up to 1-4 months because so many other vehicles with the exact same failure are waiting for their engine replacements as well. I am a working mother of 3, and now I am out of a vehicle for 1-4 months. I bought this vehicle new to be a reliable and large enough for my family, little did I know I would be left with no means of transportation because of a faulty engine!

I was 450 miles away from home. Travelling at 80 mph in the left lane of Interstate 35 when the Yukon stopped accelerating and started coasting. I looked at the gauge clusters on the dash and it said Press Start to Shift. I looked at the shifter and it had automatically moved from Drive to Neutral. It would not move back to Drive. I then pressed the Start button like it said on the dash and the whole vehicle shutoff while still at highway speed going 70mph and still coasting. I put hazards on and moved to the right sliding in-between two 18 wheelers who gave me space thankfully then I was able to get it to the shoulder. Once stopped I moved it into Park and pressed the Start button and the dash said "unsafe conditions unable to shift", or something like that. After 2 minutes of pressing the Start button, I was able to get it started again and we started back on the road. After 2 miles, I was once again back to 80 mph in the left lane when it happened again. This time I was barely able to move off the road. We were on a long turn to the left and several 18 wheelers were all around. Once stopped, it never started again. The engine shutting off at highway speed with 18 wheelers all around put myself and 2 family members at serious risk for injury and we were just leaving a family funeral. And the 2nd time it happened, I was not able to fully pull over either causing 18 wheelers to come very close to hitting us as we were stuck on a left hand turn with a 60 mph left to right cross wind making it very dangerous for us while we waited 80 minutes for a tow truck. The only indication of a problem was the engine light on after we were stopped nothing before hand. no sound, no warning, no vibration, just an immediate shutdown. The dealership it was towed too said it is a complete engine failure and the bearings more than likely failed and I will have to wait for a new engine. Most likely the same faulty 6.2 engine. Please do something before someone dies.

I had a 10 month old 2022 Yukon Denali XL. There was a constant smell of exhaust fumes inside the cabin. Took it into the dealership on multiple occasions and they found a leak in the exhaust system and supposedly fixed it. Less than 24hrs after getting it out of the shop, the engine seized up. Engine was replaced weeks later and within 7 days I started having transmission issue. GMC did absolutely nothing to keep my family of 8 safe.

Went immediately to a dealership and they identified a bearing had come loose in the engine and the engine has to be completed replaced. Cost of almost $11k and the engine is on back order with no definite availability date. Vehicle was in excellent condition, all scheduled maintenance at the dealership. No issues until this. In July of 2023, my wife and kids were driving to San Diego from Phoenix. About 40 miles west of El Centro, CA, all the lights on the dash came on instructing her to pull over. When she pulled over and shut the car off, it would not come back on. Got towed back to a GM Dealership in El Centro. The diagnosed it with a bad radiator and failed engine. The replaced both(at roughly 30,000 miles). The car was fine for about six months and then it started getting battery drains again, which continually happened starting a few months after purchasing the vehicle. They never could figure this part out. Anyway, early January of 2025, while driving back to Phoenix from San Diego, the car did the same thing. This time, it restarted and she could continue on her way home. On [XXX], while driving in town, the same thing happened, all lights came on, pulled over and car would not restart. It is diagnosed with the same issue. It has been in the shop at Van GMC since January 12th, 2025 waiting on a new engine, at 63,000 miles. This will be the 3rd engine in the vehicle. By looking online, this appears to be a common issue and happens more than it should. This needs to be addressed. My wife has our kids in this vehicle a majority of the time and this is a major safety issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Our car has 66,000 miles on it. My wife was driving it we have never hooked a trailer to it. Never done anything but drive our kids around go run errands in it. The motor seized and left my wife stranded. The car has been fully serviced ahead of schedule every time And very well taken care of it still looks new, but the dealership is now telling me the motor and the transmission possibly are bad and I’m only 6000 miles past the factory warranty. There’s no reason for this motor to have failed or the transmission as the car has never seen any hard service and has only seen normal paved roads and running errands and dropping kids off. The dealership said it’s going to cost around $16,000 to fix both the engine and the transmission out of nowhere the motor just seized with no warning and no noises

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

I am writing the NHTSA to advise of a harrowing event involving the vehicle named above. I was driving my 2022 Yukon vehicle equipped with the 6.2L Ecotec3 V8 L87 Engine. As I was traveling, the vehicle suddenly without warning shut down. When this occurred all systems in the vehicle became completely inoperable; i.e., no power steering, no power brakes, nothing, Etc. I was lucky to be able to veer/coast into the Emergency Lane without incident. This situation also caused the vehicle to become almost un-towable, in that the towing company could not get the vehicle out of the Park position to allow the wheels to rotate. They had to use special Skid Plates / devices to essentially force the vehicle to Slide instead of rolling onto the towing vehicle. This added significate hazard and risk of injury because of the problematic situation of loading the vehicle in this manner literally inches from the active travel lanes and took much longer to load than it would have otherwise. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer. The Dealer replaced the Fuel Module and returned the vehicle. This information is being sent to GM as well. After this event I was concerned for driving the vehicle but now after reading about the recent NHTSA Investigation into Engine Failures I am much more apprehensive about driving the vehicle. Even if nothing happens individuals who have these vehicles have now lost significant value and face a very difficult time even being able to sell their vehicles at all, or at a much lower price than normal because of the known Defects. I hope this helps the NHTSA to further their Investigation of GM’s defective vehicles and get these vehicles repaired and/or replaced in a timely manner before tragedy strikes any individuals.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 60 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power, prompting the driver to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway where the vehicle then stalled and was unable to be restarted. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the engine due to metal fragments being found in the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: PE25001 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 44,000.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I bought my 2022 Yukon XL on [XXX]. On Friday [XXX], only a few weeks after having my car in the shop (at the dealer) for running rough, it started to make an odd high-pitched noise and running very rough at higher speeds. I immediately called the dealer and asked how quickly I could bring the car in to be checked. They said they had no availability for over 10 days, and offered me an appointment for then. By the next morning, it seemed to be running better and I didn't have to drive much that day so I hoped it would make it until the appointment. That Sunday [XXX], my husband and I drove the car to a sporting event with our children and it seemed to be ok. On our way home, however, just after crossing a long causeway over the bay, the car's motor just stopped working in the middle of driving on [XXX] in Miami. We were in the left lane and had to try to change multiple lanes while coasting only, and were only able to get off the traffic lanes because there happened to be a side street that came up quickly enough to turn onto before the car came to a stop. It was completely unexpected and without warning, and had we been on the interstate or even the causeway we had just come off of, it could've easily caused an accident with my whole family in the car. Once stopped, it wouldn't crank or even try to turn over, no matter what we tried. It took 2 tow trucks because we couldn't even change/move gears enough to put it in neutral, so couldn't use the flat bed that arrived first. We were stuck for hours in a less than desirable area of town. The dealer took a week to look the car over, then said the engine had seized up and would need to be replaced. The engine was on back order and it took over 6 weeks for the replacement. After replacement, 2 separate issues arose over the following 2 weeks, each the result of a component not being properly tightened during the engine replacement by dealer service technicians. Engine failed on highway in a different state, was able to drive home but barely made it. 2 newborns, 2 toddlers, and 2 adults were all in the vehicle at the time the engine started squealing. No warning signs. Dealer dropped oil filter and it was full of metal. Official diagnosis was main crank thrust bearing failure. Rebuilt engine was installed under powertrain warranty (37500 miles). GM did not put us in a comparable rental vehicle, so I had to pay out of pocket expenses outside of their rental allowance for a compact car. Dealer charged for an oil change. Dealer changed the rebuilt engine warranty terms upon pickup from 3yr/100,000miles to 12mo/12,000 miles or the current terms of power train warranty, whichever was longer. GM is well aware of this issue and is keeping it quiet. Rebuilt engines are on back order for months because it’s that common of a failure.
