2013 GMC SIERRA 2500 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2013 GMC Sierra 2500 has 1 complaint and 7 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report sudden stalling while driving without warning lights, leading to diagnoses of fuel system failure. The single complaint involves a fuel pump failure causing the vehicle to stall at highway speed.

Common Issues

  • Fuel pump failure. A vehicle stalled at 60 MPH with no warning lights, requiring a full fuel system assembly replacement due to pump failure diagnosed by a mobile mechanic.

Seven recalls affect the 2013 GMC Sierra 2500, impacting safety and equipment-related systems such as air bag inflators and fire extinguishers. These recalls address critical safety hazards and equipment malfunctions across various model years and zones.

Recalls

  • Passenger air bag inflator. (NHTSA Recall 21V054000) Around 1.7 million vehicles were recalled due to inflators with phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate that may explode after prolonged exposure to moisture and heat. Explosions could send metal fragments into occupants causing serious injury or death. Dealers will replace the inflator free of charge. Interim and follow-up owner notifications were sent in 2021 and 2022.
  • Passenger air bag inflator. (NHTSA Recall 21V053000) Approximately 692,526 vehicles face recall for defective passenger side air bag inflators containing hazardous propellant that may explode. Risks involve sharp metal fragments causing severe injuries or fatalities. GM is replacing inflators at no cost, with notifications issued starting in early 2021.
  • Fire extinguisher defects. (NHTSA Recall 18V267000) About 6,154 vehicles equipped with certain plastic-handle and push-button fire extinguishers may have extinguishers that clog or require excessive force to discharge. Nozzles might detach during use risking injury and failure of the device. GM provides free replacement extinguishers through Kidde with owner contact initiated from 2018 onward.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs due to stalling or defects associated with multiple recalls may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Legal consultation is advisable for those facing unresolved or recurring safety issues related to this vehicle.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

The contact owns a 2013 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road, where a mobile independent mechanic diagnosed that the fuel pump had failed. The mechanic determined that the entire fuel system assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then towed to an unknown dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was currently being towed to the residence. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the repair could not be covered because the VIN was not included in a related recall and the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 206,000.
