ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Vehicle (2019 GMC Sierra SLT X31!Crew Cab 6.2 l gas engine) stopped running while driving down the road (Wednesday [XXX]. Tried to start truck - would crank over quickly but failed to start ( crank no start with no check engine light.) tried several times same result. Started after about 5-10 minutes and was displaying low fuel indicator even though we knew it had approximately 1/2 tank. We immediately put gas in it and it took approximately 1/2 tank to fill. Still no check engine light and confirmed no stored codes via onstar report. Drove the truck around for may 1hr and check engine light came on but was still running and did not stop running like it did earlier. On star reported ECM SYSTEM CODE P129F ( Fuel pump or fuel pump power control module). Long story short, put truck in independent repair shop I use. They diagnosed it was a defective fuel pump located in fuel tank. They told me GM technical support recommended to replace the fuel pump and fuel pump power and control module at a cost of ~$1325.00. It is my opinion this is a safety hazard and very similar if not exactly the same failure symptoms / modes as others have already reported. I requested to keep the failed parts and still have them in my possession. Please review and let me know if you need or want additional information . POWER TRAIN

My truck is currently experiencing shuddering when driving. This happens at random times but is becoming more frequent. I have taken it into service shops on numerous occasions, and they have not been able to identify the cause due to my truck not exhibiting these conditions when they are diagnosing it. I have run out of funds to continually pay for diagnostic fees, so I have had to let it go until recently. Now it shudders, shifts very harshly, rpms fluctuate continuously, knocking noise when driving, and in the mornings when I first leave for work, my truck will not shift out of first without revving high in rpms. I took it to a mechanic and was told that it was my torque converter, which has now damaged my transmission. All of which I have to pay for out of pocket. These symptoms started when my vehicle was still under warranty (around 30,000 miles). I even flushed the transmission, and it did not help. This is my daily driving truck, and I use it to go to work and transport my 3 young children around. Most of our driving is done on the highway at high speeds (70 mph). When my truck shudders or shifts harshly, I feel that it is going to cause me to lose control or wreck, putting not only my life but my children's lives in danger. I have not consulted a lawyer, as I do not have enough money to do so. I have not had the manufacturer look at it, because when I called about it, they told me I would have to pay for all service fees since it is out of warranty. The only warning lamps I get is when it goes into limp mode (which is at least once or twice a month) and by the time I used to get it to a mechanic, the light was off and they said there is nothing they could do about it. All of this has been happening to some degree since it was around 30,000 miles and only getting worse. The fact that I have put over $20,000 into this (not including my monthly payments of $990) and now have to replace the transmission & torque converter is ridiculous.

ENGINE

Engine failure; according to GM Mechanics, the lifters failed and this resulted in a broken push rod. Vehicle is now waiting for a new engine; $8,882.00 out of pocket from owner, because current recall does not include the 2019 or 2020; only the 2021 and newer of the same enginee, with the same exact failures. Vehicle has under 75,000 miles and has been serviced for oil change and engine maintenance at GM dealership since purchased. Several different mechanics, on with over 40 years of GM Engine experience, have evaluated the engine all deeming the same failure. Dealership confirms that there is a 6 to 8 week lead time for the new engine because, quote, "there are so many being replaced for the existing recall". I received no warning from the vehicle systems, no information from the local GM dealership or any other communication that my vehicle was at risk for this failure. I am without a vehicle for likely 2 months and will be 'out of pocket' almost $9,000.00 when this is done. This is my second Sierra Denali 1500 in the past 10 years, and my >10th GM vehicle to own, and for the 'Premium Pick-up Truck' on the market, I have always expected the finest quality and service, and this situation changes everything.

POWER TRAIN

I bought my 2019 GMC Sierra in August of 2019. It had 3000 miles when I bought it. It now has 59000 miles on it and is in the shop today for transmission repair. The authorized dealer has flushed the transmission and I am waiting for a call back. The flush will be in the $500+ range and they charge a $165 diagnostic fee also. The transmission shudders, knocks and grabs when I accelerate. It feels like I have been rear ended. It also leaps from a complete stop. It doesn't accelerate smoothly. I feel this is a dangerous situation. I have called GMC Customer Service to complain and they have escalated to someone who is going to call me back in 24-48 hours.

The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 MPH, there was an audible chime heard, and the message "Stop Engine - Zero Oil Pressure" was displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was turned off and towed to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine had seized due to a lack of engine oil. The contact was informed that the engine oil cooler line had detached from the crimp and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Subject: Urgent Vehicle Safety Complaint – 2019 GMC Sierra Denali Escalating mechanical and electrical failures — many beginning before 100,000 miles, and continuing as of today, at approximately 110,000 miles. These issues have made the vehicle unreliable and unsafe to drive. Since purchasing the vehicle, I have had it serviced regularly and reported that it was driving rough, jerking into gear, and showing early signs of engine and transmission problems. These issues were noted during multiple multipoint inspection services, yet no lasting solutions were provided. Major issues have included: •Engine performance failures •Fuel injector malfunction •Serpentine belt and idler pulley damage •A/C compressor belt failure •Power steering malfunctions •Vehicle stalling at traffic lights •Loss of power on major highways •Rear window water leaks •Significant and ongoing electrical system problems •Shaking when brakes applied after having brakes and rotors replace in March •Screen monitor going out after paying over $ 900 dollars for updated software and repairs to the electronic component that cost over $2500. Despite continued maintenance, on Thursday, July 3, 2025, my truck began losing power and smoking heavily while driving on a busy highway in Georgia. My grandchild, who was riding with me, yelled, “Grandma, it’s smoking — please get out!” as we pulled off the road in fear of a fire. This terrifying incident left us stranded and emphasized just how dangerous this vehicle has become. I filed a formal complaint with the GMC Corporate Office, but no support provided or an investigation. Over the past six months, I have spent more than $5,000 trying to keep this vehicle operational. So many critical systems have failed, despite consistent maintenance, raises serious concerns. Finally, the fuel injector repaired 3 days later a message on dashboard displaying service Tire monitor system and steering wheel shaking when brakes are applied.

ENGINE

Check engine light came on for the first time. Engine started knocking, had loss in power, took it to the closest shop. Initial report was lifter failure, after taking apart the engine for lifter replacement they deduced the bad lifters also were accompanied by camshaft damage, and bad heads. Overall resulting in engine replacement being required. Again, first time the check engine light has come on.

POWER TRAIN

Component/System that failed: The issue appears to originate from the transmission or drivetrain, specifically resulting in the rear wheels locking up and dragging at low speeds. It feels like something is seizing inside the drivetrain, making the truck very difficult to move. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. How safety was put at risk: This failure presents a serious and unpredictable safety hazard. The vehicle begins locking up randomly when slowing down, such as in parking lots or residential areas. If this occurred at higher speeds or in traffic, it could easily result in a crash, loss of control, or pedestrian injury. It’s completely unreliable and unsafe to operate in this condition. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center? The issue is part of a well-known transmission defect affecting GM’s 8-speed automatic transmissions. There are multiple class action lawsuits and thousands of consumer complaints documenting identical symptoms. GM is fully aware of the defect but has refused to issue a recall, instead allowing the time-based warranty to expire even when the mileage is still well within the 60,000-mile limit. My local GMC dealer refused to offer a loaner or goodwill repair and quoted over a week just to diagnose it despite knowing that this is a known failure point. The symptoms are consistent with the known defect GM continues to avoid addressing. Has it been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance? No outside inspection has occurred yet. Given the widespread documentation of this defect and the consistency of symptoms, it should not be necessary to involve other parties. Were there any warning lamps or messages? No. There were no warning lights, messages, or alerts of any kind. The failure occurs randomly, and without any prior indication. That unpredictability makes the issue even more dangerous.

While traveling on the freeway at freeway speeds and with the cruise control on, on 7/22/2025, my vehicle abruptly start making an odd noise, the steering wheel started to vibrate / move as if I had a flat tire. I safely existed the freeway and pulled over to investigate, there was no flat tire yet the vehicle still made the noise and experienced issues when the throttle was applied. I proceeded to call a tow truck, and have the vehicle towed from Alpine, CA to Temecula and Temecula Valley GMC. While there the dealership gave me an initial diagnosis of "Miss fire in cylinder 8". We left the vehicle, and awaited more information. The next day I received a phone call stating that they needed to do an engine teardown to completely diagnose the issue, to the tune of approx. $1,500. In the dealers words, they needed to do the teardown to determine if "They could salvage the engine, or if it had to be condemned". The following day I received another call stating that the engine needed to be completely replaced due to a collapsed cylinder. The estimate for this work is over $13,000. the truck is 6 years old with 58,XXX miles.

Gmc service department department claims they couldn't find anything wrong after it sat for two days in there lot after having it towed they were closed weekends and looked at it that Monday morning finding no signs of anything wrong. After picking up my vehicle I strongly feel like if at higher speeds or even environment this issue will endanger myself passengers and bystanders. On 7/17/25 vehicle was taken to Star Buick/GMC in Easton PA for rear brakes and an oil change. This vehicle has 49,981 miles on it. I was told after the oil change the tech took the truck for a test drive. I was told he made it about 20 feet and the engine seized. Either the tech forgot to refill the crank case or it is another GM 6.2 disaster. Please advise as the dealer is quoting over 12K to replace engine.

When this happened i was traveling at 70mhp on interstate I-69 when the the truck lost power to the engine, steering and power braking. The truck was inspected by a GM dealer and they found the engine had blown & with that it caused damage to the coolant system & to the catalytic converterin which all was replaced at full customer cost. Prior to the engine failure 2 other times it lost power and had a rough ilde and trouble starting . 1st time the dealer could not replacate the issue the next time found a camshaft postioning sensor was bad which was placed at customer cost.

I washed my truck on a Saturday and as I was driving later that morning my tailgate opened while in transit. I did not notice this until I had stopped. After a little digging I found the 2019 tailgate electric switch is prone to this problem when it gets wet. There were no warning lamps for this problem.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

I was driving with my wife about to merge into traffic on the interstate when I had a huge power loss. It was a busy part of the interstate where I could have been ran over. There was a lot of traffic and was fortunate the Semi driver was alert and slowed down. I was not aware of any failures of this motor or received any notices from GM. After conducting research I found that this was a know issue that GM failed to report. My truck has been serviced regularly and until that point had not given any signs of a upcoming failure, I have read that GM is looking into other years such as 2019 which mine is. I have had no luck with GM customer care with the only response being I need to crunch the numbers from my claim advisor. I have the 6.2 L87 motor and know of the clip failure do to poor assembly and parts and debris getting into the motor causing the failure. I am looking to report this and request any assistance available. My first stop was the dealership, then GM customer care

STEERING

My 2019 GMC Sierra Denali shut off suddenly while I was stopped in traffic. The engine died, the steering wheel locked, and the dashboard displayed warning messages including “ESC,” “power,” and another I didn’t catch. The truck would not restart despite attempts. The check engine light is now on. This happened without warning, and I had no prior mechanical issues. The vehicle is well maintained, garage-kept, and recently received a full service including oil change, brake work, and 75K-mile recommended service. I fear this is related to a known issue affecting other GMC engines under investigation for sudden power loss.

There is a common lifter failure issue with the 5.3 V8 engine in these vehicles and local mechanics I've spoken too are very aware. The 6.2L was recalled for the same reason. GM would not honor or cover any of this as it was "out of warranty", however, I strongly feel this should be investigated.

The engine failed and needs full replacement. Known GM issue with lifters. Engine style 6.2L. We contacted GM and they are not responsive and they provided a claim number. To repair is over 9,000$ and I still owe about 7000$ and the truck was purchased brand new. GM cannot furnish a replacement engine. The dealer showed 34 in stock when ordered. The dealer contacted us later stating GM canceled the order and they do not have an ETA when they can send an engine for the vehicle. We are paying on a vehicle that is stuck at dealer and cannot be repaired.

ENGINE

I had a 2019 GMC Sierra with a 6.2L gas engine. The engine failed while I was driving on the highway at 65 mph. The truck began shaking badly, check engine light and all kinds of warning lights came on. I pulled over and drove slowly 10 miles to a GM dealer who then told me that I should not be driving the truck due to safety concerns and it could lose power and lead to an accident. I had it towed back to my home town ($500 later) to the GMC dealer where I purchased the truck. They told me the same thing, it could not be driven. GM has since recalled vehicles with this same 6.2L engine manufactured in model years 2021-2024. I believe that recall should have included my 2019 truck. I was at risk of serious injury or death due to engine failure, fortunately I did not crash. However, I lost $14,000 in value of the truck thanks to the faulty engine. I believe the recall should be expanded and I should be compensated by GM for the engine failure. I have attached the estimate for the repair.

POWER TRAIN

I am reporting a serious mechanical and safety issue with my 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 (5.3L engine). The truck began misfiring, running rough, and would frequently “jump” and shut off while driving — creating an unsafe situation on the road. We attempted several repairs to resolve the issue: •Transmission flush •Replaced the intake manifold gasket •Replaced all eight fuel injectors •Inspected all ignition coils •Replaced faulty sensors The vehicle repeatedly showed a Cylinder 8 misfire, even after these repairs. Eventually, it was diagnosed that both the lifters and camshaft are bad, and the engine now needs a full replacement. This is extremely concerning because the truck has only about 47,000 miles on it. We brought it to the dealership in September 2024, while it was still under warranty, and told them it wasn’t running right. The dealership said there was nothing wrong. Now that the warranty has expired, GM is refusing to help with any repairs. This appears to be a manufacturing defect that was not properly diagnosed while under warranty. Engine failure at such low mileage, especially with early warning signs and repeated diagnostic errors, should be investigated as a serious reliability and safety concern.

Since I bought the truck, it has had transmission problems. The truck will violently jerk forward between Park - 1st - 2nd gears (up and down) pretty frequently. The dealership denied being able to recreate the issue and nothing was wrong. After dropping the vehicle off a few times, the dealer service dept said they recreated the problem and replace the torque converter. It did not work and the service dept manager told me that they knew about the problem the whole time but were instructed by General Motors to not attempt to fix the issue. I called GM Company and a supervisor eventually admitted to knowing of the transmission and engine issues all along but the GM engineers have not found a solution yet but they are working very hard to figure it out. Since those calls, my lemon law claim with BBB Auto was approved, but suddenly denied with no explanation. Following that, the #2 lifter failed and damaged the cam shaft. All were replaced and that was at 70,000 miles. The transmission has not been fixed.

I was headed out of town and stopped in the neighborhood at a stop sign. As usual, the Auto Stop/Auto Start feature turned the engine off and when I lifted my foot off the brake pedal to reengage the engine, the truck started rolling backward. The engine would not start even though all the gauges and systems were working as if the engine was on. I had the truck towed to my mechanic and after troubleshooting, they determined the engine was locked up and would need to be totally replaced. My truck has the 6.2L gas engine and have since learned that GMC is recalling later model trucks with this engine in them due to engine failure. If my engine failure had happened anywhere other than at a stop sign in a neighborhood, it could have caused a significant accident. I can't find a new engine because of the GMC recall and the cost to replace the engine with a lower mileage, used engine is approximately $16,500.

SERVICE BRAKES

This is a second report of an issue that first happened in February 2025, the dealer replaced the battery and called it fixed. On Friday 5-2-2025 I started the vehicle and as I was driving the dash lit up with these warnings: Service Trailer brake system, Service ESC, Brake System Failure 62 mph top speed, Steering assist reduced drive with care, The vehicle steering got stiff and brake pedal went to the floor board with a little braking available if I stood very hard on the brake pedal. I got off to the side of the road, cycled the truck on and off and was able to drive off. It did this three times before I could get it to the dealer the next day, If my daughter was driving I would have expected that two of the three would have resulted in a wreck as she would not have been strong enough to steer or stop the vehicle. The dealer had it three days and replaced the brake master cylinder and called it fixed, I picked the vehicle up and on the way home I stopped for gas, after the gas station the dash displayed: Service brake assist, I turned right around and took it back to the dealer, they checked the code and said the brake assist module was drawing too much current, I picked the vehicle back up three days later, they said they bleed the air out of the brake system and called it fixed. No one wants to ride with me and my daughter is begging me to trade the truck, they call it a death trap waiting to happen. GM says it is all normal issues.

ENGINE

I am writing to formally document an ongoing and serious issue with our 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 (VIN: [XXX] ), which I strongly believe may be related to the current GM recall involving L87 V8 engines—despite my vehicle not yet being included. Early last year, our family experienced a sudden and frightening loss of power while driving at full speed on a curve, with our children and their car seats secured in the back. The vehicle lost power abruptly, accompanied by a loud ticking noise from the engine. This incident could have easily led to a serious accident and was terrifying for all of us. Since that time, the truck has spent more than half the year in and out of repair shops. The initial repair estimate was nearly $20,000—unmanageable for us, especially since the vehicle is paid off. Fortunately, a family friend was able to repair it for significantly less, but the problems have persisted. Most recently, the check engine light returned and we experienced another episode of reduced power, suggesting an unresolved or recurring failure likely tied to internal engine components such as the long block, crankshaft, connecting rods, timing chain, or camshaft. This truck is essential for our family’s daily life—including commuting to work and school, and especially out-of-town travel. Our other vehicle, a 2007 Honda Accord, is much smaller and insufficient for our growing family. This ongoing issue has caused substantial disruption, stress, and financial strain. It has also delayed our ability to upgrade to a larger family vehicle, something we had planned and budgeted for before this ordeal. Given the severity and duration of the issue—and its apparent connection to the same engine problems affecting newer models—we want to ensure this situation is documented with the NHTSA and GM. We sincerely hope that the scope of the current recall will be expanded, and that appropriate relief or support will be offered to affected vehicle owners like us. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.

I was driving on the highway at 60mph and the engine shut off. I was fortunate enough to be able to get the truck off the road without incident. The instruments instructed me to try to start the vehicle again. Upon doing so the engine made very loud and erratic knocking noises and I shut it off. I towed the truck to the GMC dealership where they told me the engine had thrown 2 rod bearings. They told me this was VERY common with the 6.2L engine. The truck was extremely well maintained with all services at the dealership, and only had 70,000 miles on it. GM quoted me $15,436.00 to replace the engine. I did open a case with GM when the incident occurred. Case # [XXX]

I’m contacting you regarding my 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3L V8 engine. The vehicle is currently experiencing a cylinder 8 misfire (code P0308), accompanied by engine backfiring, ticking noise, and exhaust fumes inside the cabin. Additionally, the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) warning light is on, and performance is noticeably affected. To date, I have: •Replaced all spark plugs and fuel injectors •Verified proper ignition coil function •Had an oil change on September 23, 2024, during which I reported early concerns about engine performance (shortly after the powertrain warranty expired) •Had a transmission flush on March 17, 2025, in an attempt to resolve continued drivability issues Despite these efforts, the issue persists. Given the known issues with AFM lifters and camshaft wear on this engine, I suspect a mechanical failure related to that system.

POWER TRAIN

While driving down the highway I experienced a sudden lose of power with check engine and other associated warning lights immediately illuminated. It has been confirmed by my independent service center and a GMC dealer that the engine lifters and camshaft failed. I have documentation to prove the vehicle has been traded to a GMC dealer. My safety and the safety of other divers around me was put at risk as I abruptly lost power at highway speeds and this caused traffic around me to slow very quickly and swerve to avoid collision. Serious personal and public injury or death was narrowly avoided due to the quick response of other drivers. I had to limp the vehicle to a safe place to exit the highway and avoid further danger. After speaking with the dealer and my independent maintenance professional I can say that the problem was showing eminent failure, for about a year there was a tik I was hearing that in the past had been described as the "GM TIK" some mechanics said it was normal others said it might be a problem but none of them ever recommended a repair. I believe this is related to the problem reported by my local news agency on 4/30/2025

ENGINE

I was experiencing rough gear shifting jumps and low power/acceleration but it was spotty and not continuous. While I was traveling on cruise control, my truck started misfiring. Once I got home the whole truck was shaking in place. I popped the hood and noticed the engine itself was shaking on the motor mounts. On the way to the mechanic, several lights (including check engine light) came on (the codes thrown were P0300-P0308). The mechanic attempted to clean the fuel injectors (that were replaced 30k miles go due to failure as well), but that did not solve the misfire. I was told the cylinder was dead, and upon inspection of the oil filter there were metal shavings throughout it and the engine, as well as a bent cam shaft. All symptoms and issues I've experience, which resulted in a complete engine swap, are similar to those of the 2021-2024 GMC Sierra 6.2L engines that were just recalled. I would like to know how many other 2019-2020 5.3L engines have had failure before 90k due to similar issues and if there is a larger concern here.

Engine failed while driving on the interstate. No warning lights and no known mechanical issues. Dealership maintained vehicle. Towed to nearest GMC dealership to be inspected and repaired. Tech told me before looking at it that it was probably an engine failure. He disclosed that my model engine was problematic and engine failure was common. He was right. My family could have been killed had I not been able to guide a powerless vehicle off the road out of traffic. A replacement engine was quoted for 15k. However GM did not have any and no eta on when they would. A used engine with 80,000 miles and only a 12,000 miles warranty was offered for 11k. I could afford neither as I’m still paying 1k a month for the vehicle. They are recalling vehicles with the same engine but only back to 2021. I’ve spent over 15k to get my truck back functional. I believe good morning should be held accountable. This known issue was never disclosed to me pre purchase or I would not have paid 80k for a truck to last only 120,000 miles

I do not know if this qualifies as a safety concern, however based on everything I have read, I wanted to report the incident since you have 39 cases already. My 2019 GMC Sierra Denali w 6.2l engine, and 60,000 miles, starting tapping on April 10, 2025. I brought it to the local dealership the following day to diagnose. The dealer reported that they located metal in the oil pan/ filter and said the engine needed to be replaced. After more reading, it seems my truck is one of the vehicles with the 6.2l engine that is failing in countless numbers. In all fairness, I did not crash, the engine did not seize and it did not create a safety hazard in my incident, so i apologize if this reporting is a waste of your time. Now i have been given an invoice for over $10k to replace the engine which is on backorder nationwide I'm told due to the number of engine failures. Obviously it is out of 5 year 60K mile warranty so I have to eat the engine replacement.

I bought this vehicle at 80k miles and I have had an on going issue with the transmission. I have done research online and found that GM had put the wrong fluid in the transmission from the factory that has caused internal issues with the transmission leading to hard shifting and transmission shuttering. On my dime I have changed the fluid twice already and also the torque converter as well. This issue has gotten better but still a problem. This has caused me to not be able to trade my truck with out being upside down because of the dealers telling me they would have to put a new transmission to sell it. So now my trucks value has dropped as well. Now I am stuck in a truck that is not safe to drive. Thanks GM for not helping me.

Loss of power was immediate. accompanied by a rhythmic nocking that was felt and heard. I pulled off and called a tow truck. The engine is a 5.3 liter v8. At Pete Moore Chevrolet they said it was a failure of the number 8 cylinder valve lifters. that all lifters need replaced along with the camshaft due to scarring. Found through research that this is a frequent problem with engines 2014-2021. See - [XXX] , et al, vs General Motors LLC. While I was driving the engine started to lose power on the highway going about 70 mph with my four kids in the car. I had to quickly exit the highway and pull over. I was uncomfortable continuing operating the vehicle and had to get it to the closest GMC dealership which was in Killeen Texas. (Patriot Buick GMC). Upon diagnosis, I was informed that the lifters were damaged and needed to be repaired. Once the technician started the disassembly he noticed that the lifters caused damage to the cam shaft resulting in additional repairs which totaled approximately $8700 in damages/repairs required. I started to research this as the lifters typically do not fail in vehicles that are 80,000 miles or less. While conducting research I noticed that this is a common problem in the GMC Sierra 1500 to the point there is a lawsuit against GMC right now. I am frustrated because I believe that there should be a recall as the safety of my kids and I were put in danger for a part that is commonly failing in this vehicle.

The truck had been parked for about 4 hours, after a 250 mile trip. I cranked it and started driving to return home. I heard an intermittent squealing noise while driving. I had driven only about 2 miles when the engine suddenly shut down in heavy traffic on a four lane divided highway. I managed to get the truck into the median and stop. I was left stranded in the middle of the highway. It turns out the the engine bearing went bad and ruined the engine. I will now have to replace the engine at a cost of about $15,000.00. This is a safety concern when the engine suddenly failed and stalled while driving on a four lane divided highway, in heavy traffic.

I was driving down [XXX] near Harrisburg PA in an active construction zone when the truck shut off, the dash blinked a few things very rapidly then went black. I was barely able to coast to an area large enough to get my truck out of the highway traffic. I was stranded on the side of the highway for 4 hrs and due to the construction hardly able to get out of the truck safely as it was around a bend. I’ve had to have the truck towed to a few mechanics to learn that it has suffered a catastrophic engine failure as all cylinders have lost compression. It made no noise at all. There was no signs this was going to happen, just driving normally then a complete engine failure resulting in no compression in all 8 cylinders with no noise. I was traveling north on interstate 95 and approaching my exit ramp. I was initially in the inside lane of travel. I accelerated to merge into the outside lane, between two other vehicles, and then onto the exit ramp. Once on the exit ramp, I let off of the throttle and the engine suddenly shut down. I noticed a message on driver information center instructing me to shift the vehicle into neutral and press "start again". The engine had shut down without any warning whatsoever. I complied with the instructions to no avail. The truck is over half full of fuel. I was within an hour of home after completing an approximately 8 hour, 500 mile, round trip over 2 days of driving. After this event, I connected an OBD2 scanner and the only code found was P25A2 brake system control module. I placed the truck in park and tried repeatedly to start the engine. It would not turn over, crank or start. I had power to all systems and no other codes. I had to have the truck towed from the scene. The truck's performance had previously been flawless during this entire trip and had given me no warning whatsoever of the sudden engine shutdown. This is extremely dangerous and a safety concern.

while driving down the road i noticed the truck had a lack of power and then the check engine light came on and as soon as it came on i heard a ticking/clacking noise. I got the truck towed to a repair facility and they found misfire on cylinder 8, they informed me and wanted to drain the oil and also removed the valve cover in order to check the valve train. They found a lot of metal in the oil along with a decent amount of decent shavings in the oil filter. They removed the valve cover and found a bent pushrod and stuck lifter. They did mention a possible noise coming from the bottom end of the engine (knocking) but at this time with the amount of contaminates in the oil and stuck lifter, The engine is recommended to be replaced. No ETA at this time for a replacement

Engine seized it won’t crank we swapped the alternator 2 times the battery once the and the starter once we also swapped the battery chip 3 times and it would turn off out of no where. We thought it was because of the miles but it was working fine. And took care of it nicely. We took it to a dealership and they told us that it needed a new motor because it was seized. But before that it would start up and turn off after 15 minutes. We took it somewhere else in a tow truck and they told us that the engine was seized.

ENGINE

On Jan 7, 2024, we went to Walmart to shop (DeRidder, LA). The truck was running normal. All gauges were normal and the reason I can say this is because our truck broke down in 2023, so we have a habit of checking them when we start the truck before driving and during driving periodically. When leaving Walmart we were at the red light and the truck just stopped. A message came on and said to shift into Neutral, which we did. The truck then died and would not stop. Pushed it into the parking lot and had it towed to Billy Navarre Chevrolet, Lake Charles, LA. After they looked at the truck on Jan 9, they said the engine was seized and we needed a new one. They couldn't say why. They said that would be figured out when the old motor was shipped back. After putting in the new motor, the POC at the dealership called and said we needed a new water pump that the one he took off was bad. They insinuated that was the cause of the engine seizing. However this wasn't determined until they went to put the old one on. If the water pump failed, we believe it should have started showing engine overheat and there was no such thing.

Transmission has had shifting, shudder and failure to go into gear from day 1 of owning the truck. Has been to the dealer on several occassions for the same issue just to be told that they either could not reproduce the issue or it was normal. On another occasion the dealer was able to notice some shudder and shifting issue and replaced the valve body under warranty. Now that the vehicle is out of warranty I’m being told the vehicle needs a complete transmission rebuild and torque converter at an out of pocket cost to me of $8500. I know of many others with the same issues from the onset of owning these vehicles.

ENGINE

I was driving down the highway with my teen daughter heading to a hockey tournament in Michigan. We live in Illinois. While in Michigan on the highway driving around 80 mph, I went to pass a vehicle and several service warning lights starting flashing on the dashboard. The ones that flashed were: Service ESC, Service Parking Break, Steering Assist is Reduced Drive with Care. At the time, the engine started making rattling noises and sounded rough. I could feel there was a problem right away. I carefully pulled over and turned the truck off. I waited a few minutes and then turned the truck back on. The service warning lights were still on and the engine was still running and sounding rough. I tried turning it off and on again but the same problem persisted. I then drove the truck about one mile to the next exit just to get off the highway. I was doing about 45mph during this time. I then pulled into a parking lot and contacted On Star to diagnosis the vehicle. They diagnosed a P300 code and said it was an engine misfire. I then found a local repair show and drove another 2 miles to get there. They looked at it for an hour and said they could not help me. They were also getting the cylinder misfire code. I had the vehicle towed to a dealership that same day. I had to rent a car to return back to Illinois with my daughter. After a week and a half, the dealer started looking into the issue. They diagnosed a lifter failure and said a new engine was needed. We purchased the new engine for $10,490 and the dealer installed it. Three weeks later, the vehicle was ready and we had to drive to Michigan to pick it up. I’ve reached out to GM and they just apologized and offered us 15,000 points in our GM account. We declined. We asked for financial assistance and they also declined and said it was out of warranty and it’s our responsibility to pay for all costs.

The truck engine experienced catastrophic failure while driving at 30 MPH. There was no warning or dashboard indication problem prior to the failure. Loud ticking noises were coming from the engine compartment just before full power loss while driving. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The mechanics found bent valves, damaged pistons and connecting rods. The mechanic replaced the the engine with a GM Longblock. The cost of this repair was just over $10,000.

ENGINE

While driving the vehicle, had a sudden “thud” from the engine compartment and immediately started getting error messages on the dashboard. When the codes were pulled, it said a misfire from cylinder number 8. The initial shop it was taken to was unable to diagnose the problem and referred me to the dealership. Upon inspection at the dealership, they stated that the camshaft and all the lifters needed to be replaced. The vehicle is still at the dealership waiting for this to be done. Upon doing some research, I have found that lifter issues are a very common occurrence in these vehicles. I was reading this morning about the investigation that the NHTSA has started into issues with the L87 engine, which my vehicle has. If the investigation is concentrated on another issue, I would recommend that the lifter issue gets looked into as well. There is no reason that a vehicle with just over 100,000 miles and has had all the oil changes done on time, should suffer a failure like this that costs thousands so dollars to fix. I apologize for not including videos of the issue, I can’t save the ones that the dealership took. Please feel free to contact me if you need any further information or if I can be of further assistance. Thank you.

So August 29, 2023, at 46,000 miles, my engine failed completely with no warning or anything, while driving to work, was at the dealership until October 4th. Then December 10th, 2024 with 83,000 miles my engine failed again while my little brother and I were driving home late that night, on the highway at 70mph , suddenly losing power, causing us to be stranded on the side of the highway at 2am. Has been at the dealership since December 11th, with no eta in sight, and we're at 36 days and counting. A spac case was opened to escalate getting a part. This truck has been a problem and I want to get rid of it as its a safety hazard to myself, family members, and other on the road. GM customer service has also been giving me a runaround as well.

My 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 - Driving home from work on the highway car lost sudden power, All engine notifications appeared on dash and a very loud screeching sound happened. Was able to pull it onto the side of the road barely. Diagnosis from nearby shop was a lifter failure in cylinder 5 causing metal shavings to lock crank up. Total engine replacement. Car has 122,000 miles and every oil change done at 3,000 miles by GMC service technician since new and documented. GMC offered nothing when notified about the issue.

My truck has had two lifters fail at different times which ended up ruining the camshaft Now my truck feels like it’s going over a rumble strip on the highway at low rpm’s.
