2016 FREIGHTLINER M2 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2016 FREIGHTLINER M2 has 0 complaints and 6 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to safety components and fire fighting equipment affected by various recalls.

There are 6 recalls involving engine components, steering linkages, brake lights, air brake systems, and fire fighting equipment. These recalls address risks including fire hazards, steering failure, brake malfunction, and reduced water pressure for fire fighting systems.

Recalls
  • Engine crankcase ventilation. NHTSA recall 15V343000 affects 3,200 vehicles. Excessive engine crankcase pressure can detach a vent tube elbow causing engine oil to contact hot surfaces, raising fire risk. The fix includes securing the elbow and reprogramming the engine control module to limit crankcase pressure. Repair is free.
  • Steering linkage. Recall 15V679000 covers 358 dual steering wheel conversions by Fontaine Modification. A locating pin may break or fall out causing momentary steering loss or lockup, increasing crash risk. The remedy kit is installed free by dealers or authorized shops.
  • Brake lights. Recall 19V353000 involves 2 vehicles with Whelen brake lights that may illuminate without brake application, confusing other drivers and increasing crash risk. Brake lights will be replaced free of charge.
  • Air brake reservoir. Recall 19V370000 affects 741 vehicles with insufficient air reservoir capacity, reducing brake effectiveness and increasing crash risk. Dealers will add air reservoir capacity at no cost.
  • Fire pump pressure relief valves (Ferrara). Recall 18V094000 includes 66 fire-fighting vehicles. Corrosion of retaining rings may cause valve opening and decreased water pressure, potentially hindering fire fighting. Ferrara certified technicians will replace rings free of charge.
  • Fire pump pressure relief valves (E-One). Recall 17V739000 covers 298 vehicles with a similar retaining ring corrosion defect reducing water pressure. Certified dealers will install stainless steel retaining rings free of charge.

Owners with repeated repairs or unresolved recall issues related to safety defects or major malfunctions may have rights under their state’s lemon law and should consider consulting appropriate legal resources.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS

Stainless & Repair, Inc. (Stainless & Repair) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Freightliner M2-112 and 1994-1995 Ford L9000 vehicles equipped with Whelen brake lights. Depending on the specific wiring of the vehicle, these brake lights may illuminate when the brake pedal has not been pressed.

Risk: If the brake lights incorrectly illuminate, it can confuse other drivers, possibly increasing the risk of a crash.

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:SUPPLY:RESERVOIR/TANK

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2004-2019 Freightliner 108SD, 114SD, 122SD, Cascadia, Columbia, Classic, FL80, FLD 120SD, Business Class M2, Western Star 4700, 4900, 6900, Sterling Acterra, L7500, LT7500, L8500, LT8500, L9500, and LT9500 vehicles. The vehicles may have an insufficient service brake air reservoir capacity. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."

Risk: An insufficient air reservoir volume may reduce brake effectiveness, increasing the risk of crash.

EQUIPMENT

Ferrara Fire Apparatus, Inc. (Ferrara) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Inferno and International 4400, 2013-2016 Igniter, 2014-2017 Cinder and Freightliner M2 106, 2013-2014 Ember and 2013-2017 Kenworth T370 fire-fighting vehicles, equipped with Hale pressure relief valves in the water pumps used for fire fighting. Rings securing the valves may corrode over time after exposure to water, causing the ring to fail and the pressure relief valve to open, reducing the water pressure available for fire fighting.

Risk: A reduction in water pressure may hinder fire fighting efforts, increasing the risk of injury.

STEERING:LINKAGES

Fontaine Modification is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Freightliner M2 vehicles converted to be equipped with dual steering wheels by Fontaine Modification between March 13, 2014 and September 1, 2015. In the affected vehicles, a locating pin in the dual steering linkage may break or fall out resulting in the momentary loss of steering or steering lock up.

Risk: A momentary loss of steering or steering lock up increases the risk of a crash.
