2009 FREIGHTLINER M2 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2009 FREIGHTLINER M2 has 1 complaint and 13 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to the vehicle’s performance and component reliability, including potential defects in critical systems such as fuel delivery and braking.

Thirteen recalls address various components including the fuel system, brakes, engine, electronic stability control, and exterior lighting. These recalls highlight multiple safety concerns that could affect vehicle operation and increase crash risk.

Common Issues
  • Fuel pump cracks. Diesel fuel pumps may develop cracks due to hydrogen induced stress corrosion, causing fuel leaks that increase crash risks.

Recalls

  • Fuel system fuel pump. (NHTSA Recall 10V339000) Affected 13,410 vehicles from 2009-2011 risk fuel leaks from cracked Bosch high pressure fuel pump elements, increasing crash potential. Daimler Trucks will repair free of charge.
  • Air brake hose routing. (NHTSA Recall 10V444000) Affects 308 trucks with dual steering; improper air hose placement near turbo outlets may cause hose melting and brake lock-up, heightening crash risk. Fontaine Modification will install new hoses and heat wraps at no cost.
  • Fuel filter flange cracks. (NHTSA Recall 10V189000) Affects 30,704 trucks from 2008-2011; cracked low pressure fuel flanges can cause leaks, increasing crash danger. Daimler Trucks replaces parts free of charge.
  • Engine intake air grid heater failure. (NHTSA Recall 10V341000, 11V146000, 11V455000) Over 7,800 trucks with specific MBE engines risk grid heater short circuits that can cause fires and injuries. Repairs are provided free by dealers and authorized facilities.
  • Expanded fuel pump crack recall. (NHTSA Recall 11V287000) Coverage expansion affecting 268 vehicles; same defect and repair as recall 10V339000 involving fuel pump element cracks and leak risks.
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC). (NHTSA Recall 11V465000) Affects 4,444 trucks; ESC may misinterpret driving conditions, causing unintended brake application and potential vehicle deviation increasing crash risk. Daimler will update ESC software free of charge.
  • Engine crankcase pressure. (NHTSA Recall 15V343000) Affects 3,200 trucks; engine crankcase vent tubes can detach, allowing oil to contact hot surfaces, increasing fire risk. Cummins will secure parts and update ECM software free of charge.
  • Intake manifold pressure sensor. (NHTSA Recall 14V080000) Affects 3,258 vehicles; condensation can freeze and cause sensor malfunction, leading to elevated exhaust temperatures and fire hazards. Authorized facilities will update ECM calibration at no cost.
  • Brake light failure linked to air supply. (NHTSA Recall 15V220000) Affects 3,571 dual-steering trucks; brake lights may fail to illuminate if primary air pressure is low, increasing crash risk. Fontaine will supply and install repair kits free of charge.
  • Insufficient air reservoir capacity. (NHTSA Recall 19V370000) Affects 741 trucks; low brake air reservoir volume reduces braking effectiveness, raising crash risk. Dealers will add air capacity free of charge.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs or affected by these safety recalls may have rights under their state’s lemon laws. Seeking advice from a qualified attorney can provide guidance on potential legal options related to unresolved safety or reliability issues.

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:SUPPLY:RESERVOIR/TANK

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2004-2019 Freightliner 108SD, 114SD, 122SD, Cascadia, Columbia, Classic, FL80, FLD 120SD, Business Class M2, Western Star 4700, 4900, 6900, Sterling Acterra, L7500, LT7500, L8500, LT8500, L9500, and LT9500 vehicles. The vehicles may have an insufficient service brake air reservoir capacity. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."

Risk: An insufficient air reservoir volume may reduce brake effectiveness, increasing the risk of crash.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2007-2016 Freightliner 114SD and M2 Business Class trucks, 2008-2009 Sterling LT8500 trucks and Thomas Built Bus Saf-T-Liner HDX transit buses equipped with certain Cummins Westport ISL G engines. Excessive engine crankcase pressures may cause the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly to detach from the crankcase ventilation breather, possibly allowing engine oil to come into contact with hot surfaces.

Risk: If engine oil comes into contact with a hot surface, there is an increased risk of a fire.

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR

Fontaine Modification (Fontaine) is recalling certain model year 2006-2015 Freightliner M2 trucks manufactured January 2, 2006, to January 23, 2015 and modified by Fontaine to have dual steering. Brake lights of the affected vehicles will not illuminate if the primary brake air supply is depleted below 6 psi. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."

Risk: If the primary brake air system fails causing the truck to rely on the secondary brake air system, the brakes lights may not illuminate when the brakes are applied, increasing the risk of a crash.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (Daimler) is recalling certain model year 2008-2015 Freightliner 114SD, Cascadia, M2 Business Class, Sterling LT8500, and Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner HDX vehicles manufactured February 19, 2008, through February 11, 2014, and equipped with Cummins Westport Model ISL G and Cummins Westport Model ISX12 G engines. Condensation in the intake manifold may freeze during cold weather conditions and interfere with the proper operation of the intake manifold pressure sensor.

Risk: The sensor malfunction could induce elevated exhaust temperatures or flames from the exhaust pipe, increasing the risk of a vehicle fire or burn injury to a person near the exhaust pipe.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)

DAIMLER TRUCKS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2012 FREIGHTLINER BUSINESS CLASS M2, CASCADIA, CENTURY, COLUMBIA, CORONADO AND STERLING A-LINE VEHICLES BUILT WITH MERITOR WABCO ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) SYSTEM MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 15, 2005 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 1, 2011. UNDER CERTAIN ROAD AND DRIVING CONDITIONS, VEHICLE BODY ROLL AND ROAD INCLINATION CHARACTERISTICS MAY ADVERSELY AFFECT THE SLIP ANGLE CALCULATION OF THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) SYSTEM. THIS MIGHT CAUSE THE ESC TO PERCEIVE AN OVER STEERING SITUATION AND THEREFORE APPLY THE OUTER WHEEL BRAKE ON THE FRONT AXLE UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS PERCEIVED TO BE STABLE.

Risk: IF THE DRIVER IS SLOW TO REACT DURING THIS ESC INTERVENTION, THE VEHICLE MAY DEVIATE FROM THE INTENDED LINE OF TRAVEL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
