Six recalls have been issued affecting various systems including engine and engine cooling, diesel fuel system, exterior lighting, and brake light switch components.

  • Engine software faults. Multiple recalls address engine control software failures causing unexpected shutdowns or failure to shut down in over-temperature conditions, which increase crash and fire risks.
  • Diesel fuel line leaks. Plastic low pressure fuel lines near the engine may develop substantial leaks leading to fire hazards and road safety issues.
  • High pressure fuel line damage. The support system for the pump to rail fuel line may loosen or be damaged during service, causing cracks that lead to fuel leaks with risk of fires and crashes.
  • Brake light malfunctions. Intermittent stop lamp failures during light brake application may prevent proper signaling, increasing crash risk.
  • Rear reflective tape obstruction. Mudflap hanger brackets may partially cover reflective tape on vehicle rears reducing visibility and increasing crash risk.

Recalls

  • Engine and engine cooling (10V472000). Affects 58 vehicles from model years 2007 to 2010 with EPA 2007 MBE 900 Detroit Diesel engines. Defect involves engine software failing to properly react to aftermarket treatment device fault codes, causing unnecessary shutdowns or failure to shut down. Risk includes crash hazard from sudden shutdown and fire from untreated overheating. Repairs are free through Detroit Diesel authorized service.
  • Fuel system, diesel (11V478000). Affects 73,500 heavy trucks from 2004 to 2008 with EPA04 MBE4000 engines having plastic low pressure fuel lines. Plastic fuel lines may leak diesel creating fire and crash hazards. Remedy replaces plastic lines with steel lines at no charge via Detroit Diesel Corporation authorized facilities.
  • Engine and engine cooling (11V173000). Covers 50 2008-2009 Business Class M2 and Sterling Acterra emergency vehicles with EPA 2007 MBE 900 engines. This recall expands on 10V472000 and involves the same defect and risks. Repairs are performed free by Detroit Diesel.
  • Engine and engine cooling diesel (12V074000). Covers 103,437 model years 2006 to 2013 with Detroit Diesel EPA07 and EPA10 DD13 and DD15/16 engines. Fuel line support assemblies may loosen during service leading to cracking, fuel leaks, fire, and crash risks. Replacement of the support system is performed free of charge by authorized service facilities.
  • Exterior lighting brake lights switch (10V178000). Involves 8,971 units from 2005 through 2011. Stop lamps may be intermittent when lightly applied, increasing crash risk due to lack of proper brake indication. Repairs are completed free at dealership service centers.
  • Exterior lighting reflective tape (20V214000). Affects 63,175 vehicles from 2006 through 2021 Business Class M2 and other models. Mudflap brackets may partially obstruct rear reflective tape, reducing visibility and increasing crash risk. Dealers inspect and reposition tape at no cost to owners.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs or safety defects related to these recalls may have rights under state lemon laws. Reviewing unresolved recall issues with a qualified attorney could help determine potential remedies.
