2011 FORD MUSTANG Complaints and Recall Information

The 2011 FORD MUSTANG has 2 complaints and 63 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners frequently report a discrepancy in odometer mileage discovered after purchase and issues with the accelerator failing to respond properly and transmission not shifting correctly. One report involved a failed clutch pad diagnosed by a dealer but not repaired.

Common Issues

  • Odometer fraud. Mileage discrepancy was found after purchase, showing a difference between the odometer reading at sale and at registration.
  • Accelerator failure. Vehicle did not accelerate as intended when the pedal was depressed despite no warning lights illuminating.
  • Transmission shifting issues. Transmission occasionally failed to shift into second and third gear, impacting drivability.
  • Clutch pad failure. Diagnosed failed clutch pad was left unrepaired after dealer assessment.

The 63 recalls filed on the 2011 Ford Mustang largely concern air bag inflator defects involving both driver and passenger side frontal air bags. These defects result from propellant degradation and moisture intrusion, increasing the risk of inflator rupture and metal fragments striking occupants during deployment. Several recalls include advisories to avoid driving affected vehicles until repairs are completed. Repairs consist of replacing the inflators or air bag modules free of charge.

Recalls

  • Driver Air Bag Inflator. Recall 15V319000 affected 1,018,622 vehicles manufactured up to June 21, 2014. Moisture intrusion can cause the inflator to rupture, risking injury or death. Owners are advised not to drive until repairs replacing the inflator are performed.
  • Passenger Air Bag Inflator. Recall 19V001000 involved 782,384 vehicles susceptible to inflator explosion due to propellant degradation in humid environments. Vehicles should not be driven until the air bag inflator is replaced.
  • Driver and Passenger Air Bag Replacement Parts. Recall 21E013000 covers 249 vehicles with replacement service parts that may explode due to the same propellant issue. Dealers will replace the defective parts free of charge.
  • Driver and Passenger Air Bag Inflator Inspection. Recall 21V081000 impacted 1,067 vehicles with replacement inflators requiring inspection and possible replacement to prevent rupture risks. No "Do Not Drive" advisory applies.
  • Passenger Air Bag Inflator. Recall 16V384000 affected 1,892,343 vehicles, addressing inflators that may rupture upon deployment due to propellant degradation related to humidity and temperature cycling. Owners are instructed not to drive until repair.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs related to the transmission or clutch, unresolved air bag recalls, or serious safety defects may have rights under state lemon laws. Consulting with a lawyer familiar with these protections is recommended for those facing ongoing issues.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain air bag inflator and/or module replacement service parts that may have been used as part of a collision repair. The parts include certain driver-side air bag inflators and/or modules, designed to fit 2005-2014 Ford Mustang and Mustang GT500. It also includes certain passenger-side air bag inflators and/or modules designed to fit 2005-2014 Ford Mustang, 2010-2012 Lincoln MKZ, 2010-2012 Ford Fusion, 2010-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2011 Ford Ranger, and 2007-2010 Lincoln MKX vehicles. Please see Ford's recall report for the specific part numbers. These parts may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the frontal air bag, an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
