2004 FORD FREESTAR Complaints and Recall Information

The 2004 FORD FREESTAR has 2 complaints and 3 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners frequently report transmission issues including gear shifting problems and sudden stalling without warning lights. Some vehicles exhibit slow acceleration and complete loss of power associated with the transmission or torque converter.

Common Issues
  • Transmission failure. Complaints include the vehicle flashing gear warnings and failing to operate correctly with no power and slow acceleration.
  • Stalling while driving. One report details the vehicle stalling at approximately 40 MPH with no warning lights illuminated, diagnosed as torque converter and transmission failure requiring replacement.

There are three recalls affecting the 2004 FORD FREESTAR, involving the powertrain and seating systems. The recalls address defects that impact transmission reliability and rear seat safety.

Recalls
  • Torque converter failure (12V006000). Approximately 206,452 vehicles affected. The torque converter output shaft may fail causing a sudden loss of motive power without warning, increasing crash risk. Ford notifies owners and dealers replace the torque converter free of charge. This recall started on August 9, 2012. There is no "Do Not Drive" or "Park Outside" advisory for this recall.
  • Automatic transmission defect (12V006000). This is the same recall as above covering the automatic transmission related to torque converter shaft failure. The safety risk and remedy are identical.
  • Third row seat latch corrosion (13V081000). Around 196,667 vehicles manufactured between 2003 and 2006 sold in certain states are affected. Corrosion of the seat anchor mechanism may prevent the third row seat from fully latching. An unlatched seat in rear crashes could increase injury risk. Ford provides repair by installing new latch striker mounting brackets free of charge starting March 28, 2013. No "Do Not Drive" or "Park Outside" advisory accompanies this recall.

Owners facing repeated transmission failures, safety system defects, or unresolved recall issues may have rights under their state lemon law. Consulting a consumer protection attorney experienced in lemon law cases can clarify available options.

Ford is recalling certain model year 2004-2007 Freestar and Mercury Monterey vehicles manufactured from March 24, 2003, through November 7, 2006, equipped with a third row seat and originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. The third row stowable seat can experience corrosion and structural degradation at the seat anchor mechanism mounted to the rear wheel wells. Risk: In the event that the vehicle is crashed into from the rear, an unlatched seat may increase the risk of personal injury.
