Transmission on my F150 suddenly dropped to a lower gear as I was pulling out on a highway which significantly lowered my acceleration. Luckily the oncoming traffic slowed until I could safely get across to my lane. Eventually it jumped back into the proper gear. From what I have found on the internet this seems to be a common defect. Only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed. This is not the first time the transmission has done this. I took my F150 to the dealership to be checked and they didn’t find anything wrong. P0706 and P0707 codes.

I was driving my 2015 F150 with the 5.0 liter engine and 6 speed transmission at approximately 60 mph in 6th gear when without warning the transmission downshifted into 1st gear causing a sudden deceleration causing my passengers and myself to be thrown forward being caught by our seatbelts. The transmission then worked its way back up the gears into 2nd and then 3rd and so on. I took the truck to a dealership (Cooper Ford of Edmond, Oklahoma) and started to tell the service manager what happened and before I even got to the downshift part he told me right away what had happened and that I will need a new main control and lead frame. It cost me $2,766.16 to have the vehicle repaired.

This is the 2nd time this has happened in 2 years. I have my truck turned off completely and locked and go to get back in it a few hours later and I open my door and the gas from the airbag has completely filled up the cab of my 2015 f150. I turn the truck on and it’s like it’s been in a wreck, all the lights on the dash are on, and it’s saying my airbags are deployed which the gas that fills the airbag did deploy, and it keeps telling me to contact 911. How does this keep happening without ford making a recall or not taking responsibility. It could seriously hurt or I hurt me or my family.

Coolant hoses defect. I have had non stop issues with coolant hoses blowing out on the highway due to the couplings they use. Plastic is not designed to withstand heat from the coolant and the constant temperature changes. I have to replace the couplings every 6month plus the heater core hoses because of the failure of the plastic couplings they use there isn’t an aftermarket option that is not plastic either this is a real issue due to being stranded on the road and not to mention the issues of environmental damage due to the coolant leaking all over the ground!!!

Truck started to get shifting gremlins. 4 instances of spontaneous shift out of gear or into lower gear below 35mph. Transmission then shifted to 3rd gear at 60 mph on interstate without warning. Gear and shift indicator on dash blinking wildly. Vehicle behind me had to make evasive maneuver to avoid collision as I moved to emergency lane. Online research said it was a bad lead frame in transmission. Took to local repair shop and confirmed bad lead frame. Replaced for $1200 and truck now shifts correctly.

This is called transmission stutter and is a common problem with Ford's 6 speed automatic transmissions, that is not specific to vehicle or trim level or year model.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

I have a 2015 ford f150. It is equipped like many others with a power sliding rear glass. The issue is the upper track for the sliding portion becomes unattached from the rear glass and falls forward. I've had this happen 2 times in the last 2 years. Specifically in the summer. The track is originally installed cheaply with 2 sided tape and a little adhesive. The local glass shop wants 85 dollars just to glue it back. I have seen multiple trucks with the same issue with the window taped up or just covered with cardboard. My concern, is if someone has an infant in the center of the rear seat with a rear facing car seat, the slide portion of the glass could come out and fall on the baby. Not to mention, it gets a little pricey to repair it every few years. The only solution from ford was to replace the back glass at my expense, which was around $1200 dollars the last time I looked into it. I believe this is a manufacturer design flaw that Ford should have to resolve and replace. I've seen way to many of these trucks with this issue for it to Not be a manufacturer problem. Thank you.

I have to turn off the vehicle and restart and it resets. I've read this is a known issue, and F150s for model years prior to and after 2015 have been recalled for this same thing. I also believe there are already a significant number of complaints for the 2015 model year for this exact issue. Please issue a recall.

First time this incident happened (around April 2025) while driving on the highway. Going about 70 mph and the truck dropped down into second or first gear almost causing an accident. Had to pull over on the side of the road. Check engine light was on the dash. Turned off the truck And let it sit a little bit and restarted it and it seemed to be OK. This most recent incident happened on Saturday, July 5th 2025 , truck kept dropping down into first gear and then just would not go anywhere. Had it towed to Auto clinic and they diagnosed the truck with not recognizing the gear selection position. They stated that this truck should have fell under the recall status for 2015-2017 f150’s as it is doing the exact same thing that they have seen many trucks get fixed for because of the recall. The Auto clinic recommended I file a safety report and also contact Ford.

ENGINE

Problem: Engine unexpectedly goes to idle speed after accelerating up to highway speeds. Cruise control was not engaged at time of failure. This has happened three times, all after a cold start up, and all within 2 miles of home. The most recent occurrence being 6-19-25. At time of failure, multiple warning screens come up on the dash, including "Hill Start Assist Not Available", "Service Advance Trac", "See Manual" (with a picture of a wrench). No check engine light comes on, and no error codes are set. Engine does not respond to accelerator pedal, engine will only idle roughly. When this occurs, the only remedy is to pull over to the side of the road, shut off the engine, then restart the vehicle. Each time this has happened, the engine starts and runs normally with all warning messages cleared from dash. Safety Concern: Unexpected loss of power can increase the likelihood of an accident, especially in heavy traffic. This truck is used frequently for towing, and an unexpected loss of power can create a loss of trailer control. Dealer Contact: Last September when this issue initially cropped up, the truck was taken to our Ford dealer for diagnosis. They kept the truck for approximately two weeks, driving it daily without having the issue reoccur. They performed diagnostics on electronic modules but found no concrete issue. Inspection: Truck has not been inspected by the manufacturer, only the dealer. Warning Lamps and Messages: "Hill Start Assist Not Available", "Service Advance Trac", "See Manual" (with a picture of a wrench)

Transmission constantly shifts erratically. When this happens, the transmission gets stuck between 3rd and 5th gears and sometimes only stays in 5th gear, no matter how fast the truck is going or even if it is not moving. About half the time when this happens it causes a rough "jerk" and could cause loss of control. If you must stop at a stop sign or stop light when this happens then you're impeding traffic just trying to get back up to speed after your stop, which could lead to an accident. This also causes the check engine light to come on.

I noticed in the fall of 2024 that my transmission stared shifting hard between 30-40 mph during acceleration. I had the local Ford dealership check out the issue and they stated I needed a new transmission and included an estimate. I decided to seek information from 2 independent transmission shops and they could not confirm that I needed the transmission replaced at that time. The vehicle has been driving fine and I recently started to notice the hard shift again at 30 mph. Every once in a while, when the hard shift occurs, it seems like I lose power to the drive train and my vehicle slows down to about 15 mph and vehicles need to go around me. It only lasts for a few seconds and then the acceleration will continue to drive normal. I do notice an increase in RPM's from time to time as well while shifting around 30 mph but does not feel like it is slipping. Once through this area of shifting, the vehicle operates normally shifting through other gears. There were no warning lights or other symptoms leading to this issue. I did notice that there was an article posted with a possible transmission issue from this year vehicle that is being investigated concerning sudden down shifting while driving. Here is the article [XXX]. I am wondering if this is part of this issue? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The transmission will downshift from 6th to 5th at hwy speed....it also at other times , will only go from 1st to 2nd gear and no farther...wrench light comes on each time.I have to pull off hwy and slowly try to take off to get transmission to shift correctly. A lot of times pulling to side of road puts me in a dangerous situation. When it won't shift past 2nd gear I have to try to pull over immediately as it over-revs.I am taking it to an independent service center and dropping it off for their confirmation as sometimes tranny will shift fine for 2-3 days and then go back to malfunctioning. It started this about a year ago, but I had neck surgery then and am now just getting back to driving. The wrench light comes on each time , along with the transmission fan.The truck is available for inspection any time.

Dealership says my vin is not included. This seems to me to be a recall issue for safety. If the sunroof is broken it could cave in or fly off. Especially since it is leaking and won’t open and cannot see the problem. Dealership wants to charge me over $200 just to look at it. This is unacceptable.

The transmission is a safety issue and is available for inspection. The six speed automatic has a 5th to 4th downshift that is regularly rough and can be jarring at times. A few weeks ago on my way home from work while driving 30 mph around a small bend the truck shifted from 4th to 2nd on its own and bucked so hard that it scared me and brought my hands off the steering wheel and made my back sore for the next day. This is a blind bend because of the shrubbery in the front yard at the bend and it is also at the beginning of a school zone. This could've been a worse situation if there would've been a car or school bus going in the opposite direction. This was certainly the worst one yet but there have been similar situations where the truck jarringly shifted from 4th to 3rd on its own. The problem has not been reproduced, confirmed or inspected as mentioned above. I have read multiple stories stating very similar or even the same occurrences on the forums. The lead frame in the transmission seems to be the leading cause for this issue. Others have been to the dealer, had the computer reflashed and were told it just needs to relearn their driving, only to have the issue return. After seeing these stories and now reading about the investigation into the issue I've been holding off to see what happens as I do not want to waste time and money to not have the issue fixed. There were not any warning lamps, etc before or after this issue. I have noticed that when the jarring shifts occur the small area of the cluster that shows gears one through six goes black and remains that way until manually pressing the button on the shifter to make the image reappear. To this point these shifting issues almost always occur at low speeds while gently resting my foot on the gas to keep a steady speed. It feels as though the transmission shifts into fifth too early, the rpms slowly lower and then it downshifts to fourth in a jarring manner.

A few years back, I was having an issue with my truck shifting hard. I actually took it to a friend's shop and he repaired it, for about $1600. They changed a "chip" in it. The vehicle was never inspected by Ford, or the police, or my insurance company. The problem was identified by the repair shop and taken care of, or so I thought. The issue seemed fixed for a while but within the last year the issue has begun again. The transmission will not shift at times. It seems stuck, which causes the engine to rev very high. I worry about causing lasting damage to the engine as a result of the transmission sticking.

I decided to file this complaint after I had seen a news article that this downshifting was being investigated for the same year as my 2015 Ford F150 for a safety issue. [XXX]: check engine light was on and codes P2196 and P2198 were present. The dealer suspected it was the purge valve, causing the problem so they replaced it and reset the codes. 10/10/24: I brought the truck in to have it looked at due to the check engine light being on again. I was told the lead frame needed to be replaced but was on backorder. The bill to diagnose this was 196.80 and I was told I could still drive it. On [XXX], I had to bring my truck in to be inspected because while I was going about 70 mph it all of a sudden downshifted and jerked me forward like it was going to abruptly stop. The check engine light came on and I had to drive pretty slow to avoid a breakdown on the interstate. Very scary to have this happen in interstate traffic It could have easily caused an accident. At this time, It was brought to my attention that the downshifting could also be related to technical bulletin 1495. Since we couldn’t get a real definitive answer on what was going on and the lead frame was on backorder, I decided to try and have the case connector in the bulletin removed and replaced as well as do a transmission tuneup on 10/23/24. This bill cost me $383.77. All codes were cleared and all appeared to be working correctly. During the course of driving on the interstate at 70mph the vehicle decelerated and went to a lower gear. The dash panel of the truck did not show all of the gears available. An emergency stop on the side of the road and turning the vehicle off and back on temporarily resolved the issue. It occurred intermittently and without warning. The truck continued to show problems and was taken to a transmissions shop which checked the transmission, replaced a line for a small leak and said everything seemed to be in order. The cause was not found to be a lack of transmission fluid as the levels were normal. The truck continued to intermittently decelerate. The last time that occurred, the back wheels locked up while on the road. The truck is now sitting due to the safety risk it poses and the locked up transmission on the rear end. It is available for inspection upon request. My safety and that of others was at risk. The problem was not replicated in a service center. The vehicle was inspected beforehand but not after the last issue, (it needs a tow as the back wheels are frozen). There was a warning light for the engine camshaft that came on and the problem was diagnosed at Ford as a camshaft issue though they could not understand the deceleration issue. The truck was taken first to Ford then to an independent transmission shop. Due to the issue the truck is not in use.

No fault codes whatsoever, no warning lamps etc. Suddenly the truck briefly downshifted into 1st gear, then upshifted back to 6th gear again. Issue occurred during heavy rain. I cleaned the bulkhead connector on the transmission afterwards and put dielectric grease on the connector o-ring. Connector Did not appear dirty or corroded. I was driving down the highway then my vehicle randomly dropped down to gear 2 from 6 and went from 65mph to 30 and redlined my vehicle. The vehicle has downshifted to a low gear several times since I’ve owned it new in 2015. Usually has happened when starting to slow down to exit the highway. Driver and passengers were jarred and thrown forward unexpectedly. Driver was startled. Backend of truck swayed. Dealer service has been told over the years. They said they were aware but there were NO RECALLS and Ford didn’t have a FIX as of yet. They said it was COMOUTER RELATED causing the transmission to downshift. I also said sometimes it takes longer than normal to shift from the start position they claimed they were waiting for a fix from FORD. Dealer inspected. No warning lamps or messages appear on the dash as a warning. They said they would inform me of any fixes for the problem as they came down from the manufacturer.

POWER TRAIN

I am experiencing dangerous shifting failures with my 2015 Ford F-150 equipped with the 6R80 automatic transmission. My truck intermittently fails to shift properly, holds onto gears too long, or refuses to shift into 6th gear. It also enters fail-safe mode, displaying a wrench icon on the dashboard. Restarting the vehicle temporarily resolves the issue, but it keeps coming back. The truck recently threw diagnostic trouble codes P0720 and P0722, which are related to the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor, a known failure point in the 6R80 transmission lead frame. Ford previously recalled 2011-2013 F-150s (Recall #19V-075, Ford Recall 19S07) for this exact issue because it can cause a catastrophic downshift from 6th gear to 1st at highway speeds, leading to loss of control. However, 2015 models were not included in the recall, despite using the same transmission and lead frame. I am concerned that Ford’s recall did not go far enough and that my 2015 F-150 should be included due to the identical symptoms and part failure. This is a serious safety hazard, as a sudden downshift at highway speeds could cause loss of control, an accident, or even fatalities. I am requesting that the NHTSA investigate this issue and expand the recall to include 2015 F-150s with the same 6R80 transmission and defective lead frame.

The sliding rear window assembly which is attached with 4 adhesive tape strips have come loose. The sliding window comes out of the frame and could become airborne if hit from the rear or in a front end collision. It is a very poor way to attach a sliding rear window and the failure rate is high. The bad part of this is most people are probably not aware of the problem other than the window frame will rattle sometimes when your on a bumpy road. It is a poor design and could be dangerous in any collision. The body and glass repair shops are aware of the problem on the rear windows of Ford pickups. This should be fixed with a recall before someone dies from the window becoming airborne in a crash

While driving on interstate, in rain, passing an 18 wheeler, without warning forward collision lights go off and truck begins slamming the brakes on by itself and the car behind me had to slam on his brakes to avoid a SEVERE crash. I brought truck to dealership they checked it out and said they wasnt sure why it happened and reset the computer, and put me back on the road. It continued to happen 2 or 3 more times until I realized it was only during rain, and when on side of 53' semi truck trailers. The last time it happened was a very dangerous and unnerving experience. truck suddenly begins slamming brakes on again going thru a major city on the freeway in heavy traffic. I brought the truck into dealer, and told them i wasnt driving it until they fixed it.The first year of ownership my truck was plauged with issues. IT constantly went into limp mode while on the freeway. I was working over 3 states and the truck would go into limp mode if I accelerated to pass. I went to every ford dealership shop along the interstate for a 300 mile stretch over the next 4 years while working away from home . Most of the problems were while under warranty. finally they updated software and it stopped. This was a very dangerous problem and the dealerships werent really very helpful. There is a safety recall on 2011-2013 Ford F150 models for the same issues I am having with my 2015 models. This vehicle started having periods of time that felt and sounded like you were running over rumble strips. This started happening at 38,000 miles and it would happen every 30 seconds to 1 min when going a steady speed. Also when shifting into different gears. Took it to a private mechanic and had the transmission fluid and filter changed which seemed to help a little. Then gradually started coming back more and more again. At 40,000 mi we decided to take it to the Ford dealership in portage, Wisconsin. They diagnosed the issue as a torque converter and torque converter solenoid. All together. This will be costing us $5,000. Upon looking up potential recalls for this problem, I noticed many F150 2015's with the same problem that were included in a recall. For some reason this vehicle is not but obviously should be. I contacted Ford and they told me to discuss the situation with the dealership that is doing the repair on the truck. Ford dealership told me to contact the Ford office. After getting bounced back and forth, I just decided to file this claim with you. I don't know what the next steps could be.
