POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Ford F-150 and 2018 Ford Expedition and Mustang and Lincoln Navigator vehicles equipped with 10-speed automatic transmissions. A roll pin may not have been installed in the transmission, potentially causing a loss of the "Park" function.

Risk: Despite the transmission shift lever being placed in 'Park' and the instrument panel display indicating 'Park,' the vehicle may roll away after it has been exited if the parking brake has not been applied, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.

2018 FORD EXPEDITION

292909 vehicles affected

18V214000

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The gear shift cable clip may not be properly seated, allowing the transmission to be in a different gear than indicated by the gear shift lever position.

Risk: If the gear shift cable clip becomes unseated or dislodged, the gear shift lever position may indicate that the transmission is in 'Park' when it may be in a different gear. Additionally, despite selecting 'Park', if the parking brake is not applied before the vehicle is exited, the vehicle may roll. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash.

2018 FORD EXPEDITION

5645 vehicles affected

18V392000

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018 Ford Expedition, F-150, and Lincoln Navigator vehicles equipped with 3.5L GTDI V6 engines. These vehicles have high pressure fuel pump assemblies with welds that can fracture, which may cause an oil or fuel leak.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of a fire.

2018 FORD EXPEDITION

462 vehicles affected

17V775000

SEATS:MID/REAR ASSEMBLY

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018 Expedition vehicles. The second row outboard seats may have excessive forward adjustment capability and/or may have an improperly installed bolt that secures the seat back to the seat base. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 202a, "Head Restraints", number 207, "Seating Systems", and number 210, "Seat Belt Anchorage System."

Risk: If the seat back is not adequately secured, and/or the seat occupant is improperly positioned, there can be an increased risk of injury in a crash.

POWER TRAIN

The transmission unexpectedly shifts into neutral while accelerating, particularly between 3rd and 5th gear. This is very dangerous, as the car loses power and stalls. This has led to several close calls, such as when merging into traffic or accelerating from a stoplight, which almost resulted in me being rear-ended or t-boned.

POWER TRAIN

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the transmission independently upshifted and then shifted into neutral. The contact stated that the transmission temperature gauge became elevated, and the vehicle shuddered while accelerating. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the transmission was previously replaced twice before owning the vehicle. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired because the warranty had expired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

POWER TRAIN

The transmission is not reliable. The vehicle is shifting erratically and the engine RPMs fluctuate drastically. Our safety is at risk when the vehicle will not accelerate when giving the vehicle gas. It is failing when merging onto highways and climbing hills. It has even begun to experience these issues when downshifting improperly. The FORD dealer has confirmed that the transmission is not performing as originally designed. This seems to be a known problem but FORD is not acknowledging the need to assist the customers. Many other owners of the same vehicle with the 10 speed transmission are experiencing the same problems as reported online. This problem first appeared in our vehicle a few weeks ago but has gotten progressively worse in the last few days.

POWER TRAIN

As I was driving yesterday, my transmission began making a strange noise and did a hard shift. About 1/2 mile later it made the noise again and downshifted to first and would not shift up. I was able to turn off the main road I was on to a side street where I put the car in park and shut it off to look under and around it. Not seeing anything I got back in and started it. I wanted to try to get it into a nearby parking lot, but after being shut off it began shifting again and I was able to get it home. It has had hard shift issues before and lagging response issues, but this is the first time it has done the downshift and noise. I went to some online forums and found multiple people with a similar issue, one of which suggested reporting it.

SEAT BELTS

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while her husband was driving at 20 MPH, the front driver's side seat belt exploded, making a loud popping sound, and the seat belt tightened and pulled the driver back into the seat. Additionally, the automatic emergency braking system engaged, causing the vehicle to stop. No warning light was illuminated. The contact's husband stated that the cabin was filled with smoke and an electrical burning odor was noticed. The driver pulled over, but the seat belt had significantly retracted and was able to be unbuckled after several attempts. The contact’s husband sustained a seat belt mark on the left shoulder, but no medical attention was received. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was informed of that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V197000 (Seat Belts); however, the contact stated that the recall notification had not been received and the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The failure mileage was approximately 26,600.

2 instances have occured while driving. Stored codes are P0562 Charging system voltage low and P07E6 Stuck in Park (6/6/2025) and P07E6 Stuck in Park (7/12/2025). I believe the issue may be related to TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN - Momentary Neutral-Out Condition In Drive - 23-2120 Upon acceleration to pass a car, I heard a loud knock, lost power, let off the gas, an Engine failure error flashed on my screen, regained power and was then able to accelerate again. The potential cost could be $5,600 and potentially higher due to labor. Ford's have been plagued by transmission issues year after year. How many vehicles need to be affected before a formal defect investigation focused on the 10R80 transmission can be made.

The problem is with the cam phasers on the Ford Eco Boost 3.5 V6 Engine. Every morning when the vehicle has been sitting overnight and the engine is cool; the truck makes a loud rattle noise when starting. The rattle goes away within 2 seconds. There are tons of information online pertaining the cam phasers. Ford Motor company is very much aware of this problem on all 3.5 eco boost engines from 2017 through 2020. There have been occasions that if the cam phasers are not replaced there could be major damage to the engine. Knowing it took Ford 4 years for Ford to get it right, this issue should be a recall.

There was a recall for cam phasers etc under 21N03. My car was fixed in 2021 but the parts they put it in were not the updated parts. I was told it was the same recalled parts that they used to replace. Now I am having the same issue again . I am not currently driving my vehicle until it can be remedied. I contacted the dealership and they are not willing to cooperate or work with me. I will attach the report that was done back in 2021 below.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Component/System That Failed: The 10R80 automatic transmission is malfunctioning. It causes harsh shifting, delayed acceleration, hesitation, and unpredictable surging. These issues have been confirmed as part of Ford’s internal TSB 23-2250, which directly references this transmission defect. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: This transmission failure poses a serious safety risk. The hesitation and delay in acceleration occur during merging, turning, and highway driving, which can cause near misses and sudden loss of power. The delayed response time compromises my ability to move safely through traffic. Reproduced/Confirmed: Yes. The issue was confirmed by Liberty Ford in Fayetteville, NC, after I paid for a diagnostic. The service department acknowledged the symptoms but refused to cover the diagnosis or repair under warranty since no recall was showing under my VIN. Inspected by Others: The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer directly or by law enforcement or insurance. However, it was diagnosed and documented by an authorized Ford dealership (Liberty Ford in Fayetteville NC). Warning Lamps or Symptoms: There were no warning lamps or error codes. The symptoms began subtly but became consistent over time. The first noticeable event was approximately in “early 2025”, with increased severity since then. I submitted a written complaint to Ford on June 9, 2025, via USPS Priority Mail (Tracking #[XXX]) and also filed a certified safety complaint with NHTSA (Tracking #[XXX]) but have received no response. I am requesting formal investigation and recall action. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My 2018 Ford Expedition previously underwent a recall repair for a known cam phaser defect at Fremont Ford in Lander, Wyoming. The cam phasers are part of the engine’s variable valve timing system and are critical for proper performance and safety. Despite the initial recall repair, the exact same issue has returned. I am now experiencing rattling noise at startup, reduced engine performance, and engine hesitation—symptoms consistent with the original defect. When I contacted the dealership, they told me that the issue would not be covered again because too much time has passed. This issue clearly indicates a recall repair failure, which poses a potential safety hazard due to timing chain slack and the risk of engine damage or stalling. Cam phasers are essential to the safe and reliable operation of the engine. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether this recall needs to be expanded or whether Ford should be required to cover failed recall repairs like mine.

After taking my car in for a service bulletin and being told that the noise that was happening in my car was just a noise, I found out that my cam phasers needed to be replaced out of warranty. Driving down the road my car had a decrease in power and could have resulted in a wreck as I was not able to speed up correctly on the interstate.

POWER TRAIN

My wife was driving home from a sports class with my kids in the car. She went to make a left turn against oncoming traffic and the car completely lost power. Pressing the gas did not give any power to the car and the car felt like it was in neutral. if the car did not have enough power at the time of the turn to make it through the oncoming lane, it would have been hit by the oncoming car endangering the lives of the occupants of both vehicles. Our vehicle continued to exhibit the same behavior and I drove it to the dealer. While on the way to the dealer it had 2 powertrain failures before I got it there (30 miles away). The dealership ran diagnostics and said it would be best to get a new tranny as opposed to overhaul since the vehicle only has 90,000 miles and is less than 7 years old. We ended up getting it towed to a local transmission shop who confirmed the diagnostic. They said the seal on the CDF drum plate failed and there was nothing that could be done to stop it. The tranny was rebuilt with all new parts, half a dozen of them upgraded parts from Ford. Upon researching the symptoms, I found this vehicle exhibited a neutral out condition and Ford wrote a technical service bulletin because this issue is so common. I'm frustrated because my family could have been seriously injured or killed because of a known issue that Ford knows about yet chooses to not fix even though this issue puts passengers in life threatening situations. I would not have known about this issue prior to my car exhibiting the neutral out behavior. My local transmission shop has all the parts that were taken out of the transmission and they are available for inspection.

I have had several issues with this vehicle throughout the years I have owned it. The current issues I am writing about include: transmission failure and replacement, rear passenger door no longer opening and continued issues with the Catalytic convertors. When it comes to the transmission it was unsafe to drive as the gears continued to slip while driving and cause the vehicle to temporarily loose power. This could have resulted in an accident. The vehicle is currently having the transmission replaced at a repair shop where they confirmed the issues. They will also be looking at the other two issues as well. The door not opening poses a huge safety concern as we are only able to use one rear door for entering and exiting.

2018 Ford Expedition Max 4wd; For the last 4 years I have consistently (1-2x a year) brought this car into a ford dealership for the transmission failing to go into gear at random times while driving under normal conditions. Even though multiple TSB's had been sent out, they "couldn't replicate" or "no codes found" or "the transmission tech is 4–6 weeks out"... nothing was done. Twice while merging into on coming traffic the transmission has been stuck in a gear, will not accelerate or go, and the entire dash illuminates with all the flashing symbols. I'm just glad my children were not in the car with me. It was terrifying. Now, the week of May 18, 2025, I'm back for my annual transmission issue as it stalled on 4/26/2025, and I almost was hit by an 18 wheeler, the ford dealership said "you need a transmission overhaul, TCM reprogram, and there is internal failure, the CDF drum comes apart and Ford is aware they have a faulty seal." The total to fix is $8,214.25 and guess what, NONE of it is covered. I have kept my vehical serviced and always taken care of it. But I will have to pay the price to fix it, or worse if there is a car accident.

1. The issue involves the transmission and camshaft components of the vehicle. Despite the fact that both the transmission and camshaft were replaced by the Ford dealership after purchase in 2018, the vehicle continues to experience problems. These components have been inspected by the dealership, and the vehicle is available for further inspection upon request. 2. The vehicle’s loss of power during highway driving and while attempting to accelerate poses a significant safety risk. On several occasions, the vehicle has lost power while making turns or driving on the highway, nearly causing accidents with other vehicles. This has been a very frightening experience for us, as the sudden loss of power could have led to a collision. 3. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by the Ford dealership, which replaced the transmission and camshaft components. However, the vehicle continues to run roughly, indicating that the issues have not been fully resolved. These repairs were not covered under warranty, and we had to pay for them out of pocket. 4. The vehicle has been inspected by the Ford dealership multiple times. Despite the repairs, the problems persist. The vehicle has been regularly maintained and garage-kept. 5. There were no warning lamps, messages, or error codes indicating the problem before the failure. However, there has been a loud ticking sound when the vehicle is started and running, which started to occur after the initial repairs. The vehicle has had no other prior indicators to suggest the underlying issue. We purchased the vehicle brand new with only 11 miles on it it currently barely has 70k miles on it. We dropped the vehicle off at the beginning of August 2024 and didn't get it back until almost the end of October, with us needing to bring it back to the dealership for more checks/repairs in December of 2024. In January 2025, we had issues with the transmission not shifting smoothly while out of town. While driving on the freeway at around 65MPH, in traffic, the transmission suddenly downshifted from 10th to either 3rd or 4th gear immediately slowing the vehicle. We almost got rear ended and tried to get over to the shoulder. By the time we could get over, which took about a minute, the transmission recovered itself and went back into the correct gear. We arrived home, took the truck in and was told the transmission needed to be rebuilt. There was a known issue with the transmission in these vehicles. We paid to have the transmission rebuilt. In April 2025, we heard rattling in the engine. We took it in and was told the Cam Phasers were bad and needed to be replaced. Another known issue. We have had the cam phasers replaced in 2020 under warranty. We had them reprogrammed again in 2022 for a recall. Now we are having to replace them again out of pocket. We again, paid for the repairs and got the vehicle back. I called Ford customer service and asked about any programs or reimbursement for these known issues. (Ref # [XXX]) I was told there are none at this time, despite Ford knowing they have issues. Ford has done nothing to correct the problems, but is obviously aware of the issues. Our vehicle only has about 50K miles and has had the most repairs on any vehicle that I've ever owned. We have already purchased the vehicle, and I'm having to "purchase" it a second time with the high cost of repairs. At the very least, Ford should repair the defective parts and cover the cost of such repairs. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The car will drop into neutral while on the highway. This happens mostly when trying to accelerate to merge into traffic, down shifting to pass someone etc. Once the car goes into neutral you lose all power. This presents a safety risk as you can be trying to pass someone or merge into traffic and your vehicle stops accelerating. This happened to me when trying to merge onto a busy freeway. I had to pull to the side to avoid getting into an accident. Then once on the side of the road i had to get the car back into gear and then work to merge from a dead stop. I bought the vehicle used with 108,xxx miles on it in May of 2024. In July I had in the repair shop for one issue and noticed there was an issue with the Auto Start/Stop. When the Auto Start/Stop is engaged and the brake is depressed it jams into first gear like a standard vehicle when the clutch is released to early. Transmission fluid was checked to be low so it was refilled. I was told to change my driving habits, which is what I did. I no longer use it because it still has the issue. Move forward to December 2024. I was driving and realized it was skipping 2nd, 4th, and sometimes 6th gears. Upon further research I found that it was normal to happen. When I was driving it home on February 20 I lost 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. I was close enough home where I was able to get home. When I got home I restarted and still had no lower gears. I let it sit for a couple of hours and drove it again and I had the normal gear shift. I called the dealership and had an appointment scheduled. I was told from that appointment a brand new transmission was needed or a transmission overhaul was needed to fix the issue. I was told to contact Ford Customer Support to find out if there were any options about the warranties that may be out there or recalls about the 10-speed transmission. When I called Ford about the possibility of my 10-speed transmission being under the recall for the transmission I was told that because the VIN did not need to recalled. Upon further research I have found multiple people with this issue in this vehicle. Ford would not cover anything as the vehicle is out of warranty and over 100,000 miles. I was told to file a claim with NHTSA because of the risk it may cause others, but at this time there was nothing more that could be done.

The 10R80 transmission does not work. This is a know problem with Ford, would be nice for them to actually take action and fix the problem they know they have. They have replacement part that fixes the problem, would be nice for them to stand behind their car.

Ford had to rebuild rear differential. The transmission failed, too. Both unacceptable especially at 62k miles and zero utility usage including trailering or 4wd.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

When it is below freezing and there is snow/condensation on the door windows the door lock can get stuck/frozen closed. Many times the door will unlock and open to get in but once I get to my destination I can't get the door open to get out of my car. This has happened on all the doors at different times. We get stuck and I have to crawl out another door that will unlock. There isn't a way to manually pull the door unlocked because the knob goes into a hole so you can't pull it up. Also, sometimes when I run remote start the door will not unlock and open to get into the car. I also have children in car seats, this would be a major safety issue in an emergency if we couldn't get out.

The service engine light has come on and off (and stayed on, in some instances) for a few years. The alert in the Ford app states that there is a problem with my vehicle's emissions and exhaust system. I have taken it to my local Ford dealership many, many times. When the vehicle is "throwing codes", as they call it, it has to do with the cam phasers. I have had the recall on the cam phasers done already, but they refuse to fix it again under the recall because "the part numbers have changed". Same cam phaser issue, but the same exact parts have different part numbers than they did 2 years ago, so now Ford doesn't have to fix it? The problem has been ongoing since 2020.

WHEELS

The wheel nuts on my vehicle are defective. The Ford Dealership had to replace all twenty-four of them for "swelling". Evidently, the design of these wheel nuts (Ford part number ACPZ 1012 M) makes it impossible to remove without destroying them because of their defective design. According to Ford Customer Care, these parts are considered wear items and are not covered under warranty. In my opinion, wheel nuts may be considered a safety item, should they fail or if they are not removeable with customary tools during roadside emergencies. I purchased this vehicle new in October 2018 and since then several Ford Dealerships have said they have issues installing and removing with these particular wheel nuts, and most are destroyed in the removal process. They have voiced their concerns to Ford with no remedy thus far. I am told these parts are also on various models of F-150 trucks. While I do not expect NHTSA to issue a recall for this issue, I would hope that a voluntary recall program could be enacted by Ford wherein these wheel nuts are replaced free of charge when service is performed requiring the wheels to be removed.

Transmission delays or goes into neutral when accelerating. I have had a couple close calls when making left hand turns across 2 way roads. Another close call during a merge where the vehicle seemed like it just decided not to go. I research the issue and found TSB23-2250. This should be a safety recall and not just a service bulletin. Ford knows they installed faulty products on the roads and could leave to very serious accidents. This TSB is not a wear and tear item, this is due to faulty programming and parts. GM uses the same transmissions on their products with out nearly as many issues as ford.

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the response I have received regarding the cam phaser replacement for my 2018 Ford Expedition. Why is my vehicle not covered under the Cam Phaser Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03, where 100% of the amount was covered under this program. I had my vehicle diagnosed from Malloy Ford with TSB 23-2148 VCTS replacement. My vehicle has extremely low mileage for being a 2018 with only 44,000 miles. After contacting Ford Motor Company’s Customer Service, I was informed that the faulty cam phasers on my vehicle are not showing under the Field Service Action report. I am aware that for the cam phasers to be marked as faulty within the Field Service Action (FSA) records, the issue must first be diagnosed and repaired under the 21B10 Powertrain Control Module (PCM) program for the Cam Phaser Rattle. Once this procedure has been performed, if the problem persists, the cam phasers can then be replaced under Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03 – Cam Phaser Replacement. Despite this clarification, I remain extremely dissatisfied with the outcome the NHTSA and Ford Motor Company has done to remedy this issue for millions of customers. I believe more can be done to address this issue promptly under the know Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03. The rattle from the cam phasers remains a persistent problem and has not been resolved. More needs to be done to help the millions of customers that are experiencing these issues and help them to avoid the outgrows repair bills only caused by Ford Motor Company using cheap parts. Please help remedy this situation.

POWER TRAIN

I was on a road trip of about 900 miles. My vehicle at the time had 103,000 miles. All maintenance service intervals had been complied with since I purchased vehicle new. About half way through the trip the transmission started acting up. I was on the highway between 75 and 80 mph when it suddenly downshifted in a jerk then it failed to accelerate. This whole time I was pressing the gas pedal and my speed continued to drop and the vehicle jerking forward and back. I was able to put it in “manual” selectable speed and regain control. I had the vehicle inspected at my destination and the dealer could find no fault codes and fluid check was good. My vehicle continued random jerky shift changes at the most dangerous times. I still got no check engine light or any such failure or service alerts. On my return trip home, it did it again. This time I was watching all the gauges. I noticed my engine coolant temp spike to 240 degrees and my transmission fluid temp spiked at 247degrees. Outside air temp was 40 degrees and it was three occupants and no towing involved. The dangerous jerking and random transmission shift changes continued. After about 30 minutes of reduced speed driving on the highway the temps dropped. However the shifting was hard and erratic. I took the vehicle to the dealer after returning home. I now need a whole new transmission. This situation was extremely dangerous as to the uncontrollability of the slam shifting of the gears causing a rapid change of speed. I am very fortunate I was not in a wreck! In my research of this problem, I found I was not alone. It is a terrible design by Ford. It gives no warnings other than slamming you around in the vehicle. Something must be done!
