2005 DODGE RAM 1500 Complaints and Recall Information
The 2005 DODGE RAM 1500 has 2 complaints and 6 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report rear differential issues and fuel tank strap corrosion. The rear differential problem involves the pinion nut loosening and causing the driveshaft to fall out. The gas tank strap can corrode and break, leaving the fuel tank hanging and posing a fire hazard.
Common Issues- Rear differential failure. Reports include rear differential noise followed by pinion nut loosening and driveshaft detachment, resulting in a complete loss of drivetrain function.
- Fuel tank strap corrosion. The rear gas tank strap can break due to corrosion, allowing the gas tank to hang low enough to risk contact with the road and potential fuel leaks or fire hazards.
There are 6 recalls impacting various systems on the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. These recalls cover drivetrain components, steering parts, wheel hubs, and multiple air bag inflator defects affecting driver and passenger safety.
Recalls- Rear differential pinion nut. (NHTSA 14V796000) Approximately 257,065 vehicles were affected. The pinion nut may loosen causing the rear axle to seize or the driveshaft to detach, increasing crash risk. Dealers fix by installing a retention feature free of charge.
- Passenger side air bag inflator. (NHTSA 16V352000) Over 4.6 million vehicles recalled due to inflators that may rupture from propellant degradation when exposed to heat and humidity. This can result in metal fragments striking occupants causing serious injury or death. Dealers replace the inflator at no cost.
- Driver side air bag inflator. (NHTSA 15V313000) Around 4 million vehicles affected. Moisture intrusion can cause the driver air bag inflator to rupture during deployment, creating a risk of injury or death. Dealers provide free inflator replacement.
- Aftermarket pitman arms. (NHTSA 10E013000) 1500 vehicles with certain aftermarket pitman arms experience fractures that lead to total loss of steering control. Fabtech inspects and replaces the faulty parts free of charge.
- Wheel hub assemblies. (NHTSA 10E040000) 34,604 vehicles using specific replacement wheel hubs face fatigue issues that may cause noise or wheel separation. Federal-Mogul notifies owners and replaces the assemblies at no charge.
- Passenger air bag inflator (initial recall). (NHTSA 14V770000) Affected about 250,896 vehicles in humid regions. The air bag inflator may rupture causing metal fragments to strike occupants. Dealers replace the inflator free of charge. This recall was later superseded by recall 16V352000.
Owners dealing with repeated repairs, unresolved recall remedies, or safety defects involving this model may want to review their state’s lemon law protections to understand their rights concerning these issues.

Pulled in driveway and without warning the rear gas tank strap broke due to corrosion, which left my gas tank hanging about 2 inches off the ground. Thankfully this did not happen when I was on the highway. The tank drop could have made contact with the road surface which could abrade the tank, create a hole from which gasoline can spill and cause a fire hazard, accidents with other vehicles, bodily injury and possibly death. We replaced the straps but felt it was important to make this report due to us finding recalls on gas straps for other Dodge Ram trucks. I feel there should be a mandatory check and replace notice on these gas straps.
