2015 DODGE JOURNEY Complaints and Recall Information

The 2015 Dodge Journey has 26 complaints and 9 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the transmission failing to shift or accelerating properly, accompanied by illumination of the check engine light. Other common reports include ABS and traction control warning lights remaining on, power steering failures, and unexpected airbag headrest deployments.

  • Transmission failure. Vehicles fail to properly accelerate or shift into gear, causing stalls and loss of power. Replacement of the transmission is often required but unresolved in many cases.
  • ABS and traction control warnings. Dash lights for ABS, traction control, and emergency brakes remain illuminated. Faulty ABS control modules are a frequent diagnosis, sometimes linked to recalls but not always applied to affected VINs.
  • Power steering issues. Complaints include leaking power steering fluid hoses, tight or locked steering wheels, and complete loss of power steering assist while driving, leading to safety concerns.
  • Headrest airbag deployment. Front headrests have deployed unexpectedly without impact or warning, causing damage and safety hazards for passengers.
  • Vehicle stalling and shutdown. Instances of the vehicle shutting off while driving, sometimes accompanied by flashing dash lights, requiring towing and repair.
  • Vehicle fires. Reports of vehicles catching fire without warning, often after fluid leaks, posing severe safety risks.
  • Cruise control failures. Cruise control may not disengage properly, often linked to ABS module or software issues preventing driver override.
  • Engine component failures. Issues with catalytic converters, valve rocker arms, lifters, engine oil coolers, and oil filter housings leading to persistent engine problems.
  • Alarm system malfunctions. Horn fuse removal is sometimes needed due to alarms activating improperly, linked to electronic control module faults.
  • Speedometer and transmission sensor problems. Speed does not function correctly and is related to transmission or sensor failures causing erratic behavior.

There are 9 recalls affecting the 2015 Dodge Journey, covering multiple systems such as engine components, braking systems, steering, airbag systems, and cruise control software. The recalls address risks involving potential vehicle fires, loss of stability control, unexpected airbag deployment, power steering hose ruptures, and cruise control malfunctions.

  • Engine cover detachment. NHTSA recall 15V431000 affects 145,379 vehicles. The engine cover may detach and contact the exhaust manifold, increasing fire risk. Dealers will install an improved mounting system free of charge.
  • Incorrect tire placard labels. NHTSA recall 14V711000 affects 667 vehicles. Tire placard labels may have inaccurate seating capacity and load limits, risking vehicle overload and crash. Labels will be replaced at no cost.
  • ABS and ESC module water intrusion. NHTSA recall 15V675000 affects 275,187 vehicles. Water may leak into ABS wiring harness disabling ABS and ESC, increasing crash risk. Repairs include sealing the wiring harness and replacing modules for free.
  • Cruise control software defect. NHTSA recall 18V332000 affects over 4.8 million vehicles including the Journey. A defect may prevent cruise control disengagement, causing unintended acceleration and increased crash risk. Software updates are performed free. Owners should stop using cruise control until fixed.
  • Power steering hose rupture. NHTSA recall 16V273000 affects 8,569 vehicles. Power steering return hose may rupture in cold temperatures causing loss of assist and increased crash risk. Dealers replace hoses, tubes, and oil coolers at no charge.
  • Frontal airbag wiring fault. NHTSA recall 17V432000 affects 363,480 vehicles. Wiring harness may chafe causing unexpected driver airbag deployment, raising crash and injury risk. Dealers inspect and replace wiring with protective covers for free.

Owners of 2015 Dodge Journeys facing repeated repairs, unresolved safety defects, or outstanding recall remedies may have legal rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a qualified attorney can aid in understanding options related to persistent vehicle issues.

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

Risk: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

I was driving to work and after about 15 minutes of driving at around 45 miles an hour my car stopped accelerating when I pushed on the gas. Shortly after that my wheel locked and the power steering went out. Once I got myself on the side of the road the car would not turn off and I had trouble putting it in park. After a few minutes I was able to turn the car off and they called a tow truck to take me to a mechanic. The tow truck driver was able to restart the car and get the car in neutral to tow it to a mechanic.

AIR BAGS

On Jun 26, 2025 I was driving down a residential street when I heard a loud bang - it sounded like something hit my car. I stopped, got out and looked all over the outside of my car but found nothing wrong. As I re-entered the drivers side of the car, I saw the passenger side headrest...it had exploded!!! I immediately called my brother who is an auto mechanic and he told me that the headrest is part of the airbag system. I did not know this. He said that some vehicles were recalled because of the headrests exploding for no reason. Although my car is a Dodge, it is not one currently under recall. I am afraid to drive the car for fear the drivers side headrest will also explode while I am driving, causing injury to me or my children in the backseat. The car is now parked until it can be repaired...and the cost is in excess of $1000 to replace both headrests!!!

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

My ABS, traction control and Emergency brake dash lights are on. When I researched the problem it did show a recall on the ABS control module and wiring harness from certain 2015 Dodge Journeys. I did take my car to a dodge dealership and they did confirm the ABS module needs to be replaced but they told me my particular VIN wasn't included in the current recall. If my car model from the same year has an active recall for the part included in the recall and it is being effective by the same problem listed in the recall how do I get my car included in that recall. I am currently still waiting for the new part to come in with the dealership to have it replaced.
