TIRES:TREAD/BELT

Continental Tire the Americas, LLC (Continental) is recalling certain ProContact GX AO tires, size 255/35R19. The design of the tire may cause excessive heat buildup, resulting in belt separation.

Risk: Belt separation can cause a sudden loss of tire air pressure and a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

TIRES

NHTSA Recall ID: 24T009 Continental Claim Number: [XXX] While driving on the highway from Lake Tahoe to Los Angeles with my family in the car, the front passenger-side tire unexpectedly exploded. The entire tread detached from the tire, causing damage to the right side of the vehicle as it separated. Prior to the incident, the car had undergone an inspection at an official Audi dealership, which included a tire inspection and alignment. No issues were identified at that time. The incident occurred in September 2024. The weather was extremely hot in the desert, so I was closely monitoring the tire pressure through the vehicle’s sensors. No abnormalities were detected before the sudden explosion. Fortunately, I was able to safely maneuver the vehicle off the highway despite the shock of the situation. It took several months for the Audi Pacific Service Center to replace the tires and send them to Continental for analysis. Continental has since denied reimbursement for the vehicle repairs, providing only a general report stating that the failure was unrelated to the recall. On [XXX] I requested a more detailed analysis, including a comprehensive report with supporting images and videos. Continental indicated a one-week turnaround, but as of February 6, 2025, I have not received any further information. The Important Safety Recall notice I received explicitly states that the affected tires may develop belt edge separation due to excessive flexing in the tread shoulder, leading to potential tread/belt loss. This description aligns precisely with the failure I experienced. However, Continental has not provided any evidence or a substantive explanation as to why my case does not fall within the scope of the recall. Given the circumstances and the clear similarities between my experience and the recall description, I am requesting reimbursement for the repair costs resulting from this incident. My car is still not safe to drive because of the damage. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (F

WHEELS

There currently exists a recall (24T-009) on the Continental ProContact GX AO 255/35R19 96H XL tire which was the OEM tire on some MY21+ Audi A4/A5s. The recall was the result of the compound used on the inner and outer edges improperly dissipating heat, resulting in premature wear, and belt breakage. I have a 2023 Audi A4, [XXX] which has the OE Continental ProContact GX AO 245/40R18 97H XL on it, and at 26,500 miles on the vehicle, all 4 of the tires require replacement due to significant wear on the inner and outer edges. All maintenance and service intervals were completed early or on time by the certified Audi Dealer. All 4 tires show normal and safe tread wear with the exception of the inner and outer edges. There are no known mechanical defects or issues with the vehicle, and the ADAS system functions properly and without issue, so there is certainly no alignment issue significant enough for a system fault. I am concerned that the Continental ProContact GX AO 245/40R18 97H XL tires suffer from the same defect as those in NHTSA recall 24T-009 and that if not replaced due to premature wear, will create a risk of injury and death. TIRES:TREAD/BELT

The front tires started to come apart (tread separating from belt). I purchased new tires and had a shop install them. Some time later, after I had replaced the tires, I received a recall notice from Audi/Continental Tire for this exact issue. The notice (NHTSA Recall ID 24T009) stated to contact continental for reimbursement. I have contacted Continental Tire via telephone. They instructed me to submit pictures of the tires and receipts via their website. I did so on 11/14/2024, 12/5 and 1/14. I have only received automated validations of receipt. Continental Tire has not responded and will not address the issue. I have attached the documents sent to Continental Tire.
