2020 CHEVROLET TAHOE Complaints and Recall Information
The 2020 CHEVROLET TAHOE has 11 complaints and 6 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to engine failure, transmission problems, and stability control malfunctions. Complaints include sudden loss of power, shaking, and hard shifting, often without warning lights activating.
Common Issues
- Engine seizure. Owners report the engine completely seizing while driving, sometimes at speeds as low as 35 MPH. One report noted GM’s awareness of engine issues without issuing a recall.
- Transmission failure. The vehicle’s RPM revs up but the Tahoe does not move or shifts poorly, with hesitation occurring when trying to shift into reverse.
- Stabilitrak system malfunction. The stability control light activates unexpectedly multiple times at low speeds, sometimes accompanied by loss of power steering and brakes; the vehicle even turned off in one case.
- Lifter/ticking noise. Noise from the valve covers resembling failing lifters has been reported, indicating possible engine wear or mechanical defects.
- Fuel pump defects. A malfunctioning high-pressure fuel pump produces rough idling, hard shifting, and acceleration hesitation; it was linked to a recall due to fire risk from weld issues.
- Check engine light cycles. The light turns on and off intermittently, often before performance issues arise.
- Safety seat failure. One owner reported a car seat failing its safety test and refusal of warranty coverage for the issue.
There are six recalls affecting various systems of the 2020 CHEVROLET TAHOE. These recalls primarily address issues related to the fuel system, brakes, electronic stability control, and tires.
Recalls
- Fuel pump recall (N192283991). Affects 502 vehicles due to missing pressure regulators causing over-pressurization and potential leaks, increasing fire risk. Dealers will replace the fuel pump free of charge. Started December 2019.
- Brake system recall (N192261050). Covers 652,967 vehicles with a 5.3L engine and 4WD. A failing wheel-speed sensor can trigger the Electronic-Brake Control Module to apply unintended braking on the opposite wheel, causing the vehicle to pull and increasing crash risk. Dealers will reprogram the EBCM at no cost. Started December 2019.
- Electronic stability control recall (N192261050). Same recall number and vehicles as brake recall. The stability control system may activate unexpectedly due to sensor failure, causing the vehicle to pull to one side. Reprogramming is performed free of charge.
- Tire recall (N212329050). Affects 33,838 vehicles with over-cured Continental tires that may develop sidewall breaks or belt edge separation, risking sudden air loss or tread failure. Dealers will inspect and replace tires as needed free of charge. Began March 2021.
Owners with repeated engine failures, transmission problems, or unresolved recall repairs should consider their potential rights under their state’s lemon law. Consultation with a qualified attorney may help clarify options for warranty reimbursement or vehicle replacement.

TIRES
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, XT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, 2018-2021 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, 2019-2020 Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, GMC Acadia, Sierra 1500, and certain Continental tires sold to the aftermarket for various model year 2018-2021 vehicles. The affected tires were cured for too long during production.
Risk: Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
Risk: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Camaro, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The fuel pump may be missing a pressure regulator, allowing for over-pressurization of the fuel system.
Risk: Over-pressurization can crack the fuel pump and cause leaks, increasing the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source.

Check engine light illuminated then went off and came back on after another drive cycle. Vehicle began to idle rough and experienced hard shifting and acceleration hesitation. I checked the oil and noticed a fuel odor smell on the dip stick and the oil appeared thin. Upon mechanic inspection they found a malfunctioning high pressure fuel pump. This part was recalled on other vehicles of the same model year due to bad welds. This could have resulted in fire if left unchecked.

My 2020 Tahoe stabilitrak has gone off approximately 5 times over the past 2 months April and May of 2025 in one incident my vehicle did turn off all incidents were at low speeds less than 5 MPH. Four of the incidents the stabilitrak light turned on and an audible beep, I also lost power to my steering and breaks. When I had the oil change the service Tec at the dealer stated they can not test it unless the light WAS on? Has anyone reported or experiences this issues What can be done to fix this issue. Zero warnings. Driving one day and the vehicle started shaking and running very hard even when just in idle. Dealership has determined engine failure, due to piston one failing and braking off into engine. Car has had routine oil changes and maintenance. Has not been inspected by manufacturer. GM is not assisting.

There is an unusual lifter/ticking noise coming from the valve covers on my vehicle. The vehicle is scheduled to go to the Chevrolet dealership on the 15th of this month but it sounds like the numerous other GM motors that have the failing lifters.

My car seat has failed the safety test on recall and they refuse to warranty it. It loosens significantly when pulled.

We are concerned that the transmission recall should be including ALL 2020 Tahoe’s. We were driving at 55 MPH and our RPM suddenly excelled and the vehicle felt like it was in neutral. This happened several times in a short distance. When we arrived home and tried to put in reverse it hesitated to move and then finally engaged. Getting it into dealership this week.

this year vehicle is also part of the engine problem GM is experiencing with the V8 Engines. I purchased this vehicle in January 2024. With less than 40k miles on it. I drove it for approx 2 months and the entire engine seized up. I was told by the Chevy Dealership that GM is aware of the engine problems on these V8 Engines and did not issue a recall. It took GM over 9 weeks to send me a new engine. In which 6 weeks they had me rent a vehicle and then finally allowed the dealership to give me a rental from their lot. I had to wait several weeks to be reimbursed for the rental, and pay my high car payment during this time, without having my vehicle in my possession. I have asked for reimbursement on my car payments, and they denied it. My car seized up while doing 35 MPH on a road near my house thankfully, but it is a danger that they knew about, and did not recall these motors. I could have been driving over 65 miles on the highway and this could have happened, causing extreme danger to me and my children.

I was at a red light and when I tried to take off the RPMs reeved up and my car would not move so I turned it off, opened and shut my door, restarted my car and it would move 100yds if that, then the RPMs shot up again (acted like it couldn’t shift out of first gear). Car has 101,647 miles, was serviced on time, no issues before and no warning lights on the dash came on before or after the issue happened. Car has not been repaired yet and still no lights on the dash.
