2022 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:HARD PARTS INTERNAL/MECHANICAL

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Risk: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

ENGINE

This is the second engine failure. First engine was completed being installed on 7/26/24 also reported catastrophic engine failure. Second engine was installed completion date on 4/04/25 it also had spun 2 rob bearings

ENGINE

The motor on this vehicle has been on recall since April of 2025. Several phone calls and a cancelled appointment by the dealership has netted a consistent "we have no information and aren't ready to fix the vehicle." Today, I was directed to the NHTSA to self-monitor when my vehicle would be ready for repair or inspection. Meanwhile, I drive a Suburban because I have five children that I am constantly transporting to school, sports events, scouts, etc. I have grave concerns over an engine failure while I am transporting my children and the risk of an accident.

ENGINE

The coolant control valve malfunctioned on this vehichle several times during the course of ownership. It causes the vehichle to run in limp mode. This part was replaced in July 2023 at ~40,000 miles as a result. The part again began to fail in june/july 2025 with a dealer visit and diagnostic in July. This causes a check engine light, reduced milage, reduced acceleration, constant fan running and fails state inspection Google searches indicate this is a very common problem, yet no recall has occured to date. The first repair was in warrantee and now the vehicle is out of warantee. If the part was not covered under the vehicle warrantee, the part and repair would have been covered by the part warantee. Becsuse of the initial powertrain warrantee repair, the part warrantee does not apply. This is clearly a defective design and part that requires recall and replacement at GM cost

POWER TRAIN

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Driving down to Florida, No warning, no lights, never any issues except a belt replacement. I get oil changes, tire rotation every 3500 miles. Almost got killed doing 75 miles per hour, engine sputtered, totally shut down. Coasted onto an exit ramp thank God it was right there or we could of been killed. Tow truck towed to Davis Chevy Gainsville, they called me on Monday said good news I have a warranty bad news Total Engine Failure, will take 3-4 weeks to replace. Now I am trying to find a GM rental large enough to get me and my family back to TN since GM said they will only pay for a GM rental car. Scary, could of gotten killed. NO NOTICE FROM GM ABOUT ANY POSSIBE PROBLEMS....WE ALMOST GOT KILLED AND CRASHED along with the other drivers on the road. POWER TRAIN

Our 2022 suburban with the diesel motor has had 3 separate incidents where by all accounts the wheels have locked up while driving. The incidents mirror what has been described in the recall N242454440. The first time the incident occurred, we were driving while towing a light load (boat ~2500 lbs) at a steady speed of 60 mph. While driving the vehicle shook violently once, and then again about 2-3 seconds later. I immediately pulled over suspecting that maybe there was an issue with our trailer. After finding nothing we drove home without incident. Shortly after this incident we had the transmission flushed for regular maintenance at about 50,000 miles. Approximately 5-6 months later the second incident occurred. While driving with no trailer, up a mountain in NC at a steady speed of 35 mph, the vehicle shook violently and then again approximately 2-3s later. Each time the vehicle shook a loud "BUMP" noise would be heard. The road was smooth and was later driven on without issue so it was not the terrain. I once again got out and inspected the vehicle and was unable to find an issue. We drove to where we were staying and immediately took the vehicle to a dealer the following day to be inspected. The dealer found no issues and we did not report any similar problems. The last incident occurred after another 8 months while towing a light utility trailer at a steady speed of 60mph. Same thing happened with a shake and loud BUMP. However this time it was not followed immediately by an other instance. Those came approximately a minute later and then again after about 10 more minutes. I cannot recreate the issue and it seems to be at complete random and is happening while driving steady rates of speed where the transmission shouldn't be trying to shift. It seems like a safety hazard that could cause an accident.

TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM

The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at various speeds or while accelerating from a complete stop, the automatic emergency braking system engaged while there was no other vehicle nearby, and the vehicle skidded. The contact stated that the traction control warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that while her husband was driving at an undisclosed speed in the rain the failure reoccurred, causing the vehicle to skid. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was test-driven, but the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at various speeds or while accelerating from a complete stop, the automatic emergency braking system engaged while there was no other vehicle nearby, and the vehicle skidded. The contact stated that the traction control warning light was illuminated. The contact owns a 2020 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact stated that on several occasions while checking the oil level, there was no oil on the "dip stick". The contact stated that the engine consumed 2-3 quarts of oil approximately 4,000 miles. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving on several occasions at various speeds, the low oil warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the piston and piston ring were damaged due to excessive wear and sticking. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the same dealer where it diagnosed that the cylinder head had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer where the failure was not replicated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.

ENGINE

When attempting to drive from a stop light or stop sign, after taking your foot of the brake, the vehicle intermittently completely turns off. It will not immediately restart and you find yourself stuck in the middle of an intersection creating a safety issue. The vehicle has been in to Chevrolet to have this issue fixed once already and it continues to repeat. I doubt the dealer has been able to replicate the issue as they haven't gotten the vehicle back into the shop after it's been sitting there for a week. There were no warning lights, messages, or other symptoms. It has happened to both myself and my wife, most recently on or about 7/1/25 where it happened to my wife multiple times causing us to leave the vehicle at the dealership for service. Just to be clear, the issue with the vehicle turning off is different from the standard auto stop/start feature.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Engine lost power and stalled without warning while driving down the highway. Coasted to side of road and was unable to restart engine. After engine stopped, dash indicated low fuel, although tank was 3/4 full. After coming to a stop, was unable to shift out of Park (which could have been a major issue if I had not been able to clear the highway before coming to a stop). Towed vehicle to closest Chevrolet dealer, who replaced the fuel pump control module. Dealer indicated that this is a common failure item to the point that they stock the part and suspected what the failure was based on my description. When pressed, the dealer representative also noted that GM has not updated or redesigned the factory installed fuel pump control module ("the new module installed is exactly the same as the one that failed"). Fortunately, traffic was light and I was able to pull to the side of road. This would be extremely dangerous if it happened while driving on a multi-lane expressway and we were trapped at a stop in heavy, fast moving traffic.

SEAT BELTS

The rear seatbelt in my 2022 Chevrolet Suburban RST became dangerously tight around my daughter's waist while she was lying down in the seat. The belt would not release despite multiple attempts. She was hanging off the seat and in distress, and I was forced to cut the belt to prevent injury. This raises serious concerns about the seatbelt retraction mechanism. I request a formal investigation.

While driving on the highway at 55 mph during a long-distance trip, the engine of my 2022 Chevrolet Suburban (6.2L V8) failed suddenly without any warning lights, messages, or prior symptoms. The vehicle lost power unexpectedly, creating an extremely dangerous situation. I was traveling to a national wheelchair basketball tournament and had a passenger in the vehicle at the time. Our safety was immediately at risk due to the abrupt loss of power in a high-speed traffic environment. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, where the issue was confirmed as a complete engine failure. The dealership later replaced the engine under warranty. I was informed that the engine installed was the same model currently under active recall (N252494001), which affects the 6.2L V8 engine in this vehicle type due to defective crankshaft or connecting rod components. The failed engine is no longer available for inspection, but the dealership should have records of the inspection and replacement. There were no warning lamps, error codes, or drivability issues prior to the failure. The malfunction was immediate and severe.

SEATS

3rd row seat headrest will not stay up. This is a problem with 2021 and some 2022 suburbans Dealer is charging me to replace it. This is a safety issue that should be apart of the original recall # N2022316750

The contact stated that there was a knocking sound coming from the engine while remotely starting the vehicle. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that there was no part for the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

On January 29, 2025, while my wife was driving our 2022 Chevrolet Suburban with a 6.2L gas engine on a state highway, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration and power to the wheels while accelerating to the posted 55 mph speed limit. This occurred without any prior warning, creating a highly unsafe situation in morning commute traffic. The vehicle was immediately taken to a Chevrolet dealership, where the issue was diagnosed as a failed transmission control valve. This failure, which resulted in a complete loss of power while driving at highway speeds, is a known defect affecting certain GM models. The part in question, the Transmission Control Valve, is currently in high demand and is on a national backorder due to numerous similar failures. A recall has already been issued for diesel engine models with the same problem, but no recall exists for the gasoline-powered versions like ours. Chevrolet has confirmed the diagnosis and is aware of the issue, but the replacement part is currently on a national backorder, and the repair has been delayed indefinitely. Since the incident, the vehicle has been undriveable, causing significant inconvenience, and Chevrolet has been unable to provide an estimated date for repair. The sudden loss of power created a dangerous situation on a busy highway, as there were no warning lights, messages, or symptoms prior to the failure. This is particularly concerning given that the part involved is on backorder due to the widespread nature of the issue. Chevrolet's lack of a clear repair timeline, coupled with the fact that this issue has been identified in other models, raises questions about the company's response and whether a broader recall or safety bulletin will be issued for vehicles like ours. The vehicle’s failure has not only been a major inconvenience but also a safety concern, highlighting the need for urgent attention to address this defect.

ENGINE

We experienced catastrophic failure while driving the vehicle on the highway. It stopped working with no warning leaving our family stranded in the lane with heavy traffic all around us. The steering wheel would not move the car would not go in neutral and there was a burning smell coming from the hood. My kids were terrified. We had to wait for state police and a tow truck while praying that the cars behind us would stop in time. We are very lucky there was not an accident. The car is with the Chevy dealer now.

ENGINE

53,000 miles. While on highway, engine turned off completely. Coasted off the exit ramp into a parking lot. Engine started again with no issue. 2 days later: engine started knocking very loudly. Vehicle completely died while driving on street. No start, no crank, couldn't shift to neutral. Dash would turn on, but that was it.

POWER TRAIN

While driving from work to the gym (03/04/25), I was stuck in traffic due to a wreck; when traffic started moving again, I didn't. It was like it was in neutral and was just sitting there revving the engine. It finally started moving but clearly not functioning properly. A few miles later the Check Engine light came on with a "Reduced Acceleration Drive with Care" message displayed on the dash. I limped it into the parking lot and as I tried to back into a parking space the vehicle stalled and put itself in park. Finally was able to get it into a parking space to wait for a tow truck to have it towed back to the dealership. Chevy dealership has informed us that it needs a torque converter and a valve body (03/06/25) and they will create a "SPAC case" with GM as it is still under power train warranty. No eta on parts. Supposed to hear from Hertz on a rental (no more than $45 coverage a day; so likely not going to get a similar vehicle as a rental); no further news as of today 03/07/25. We bought the vehicle less than a month ago and haven't even made the first payment (other than the down payment); looks like that will occur and we won't even have a car to show for it.

ENGINE

My two children and I were traveling to another state and had been driving about 2 hours when the engine in my 2022 Suburban suddenly quit working while I was in the middle of a highway. I had just accelerated and merged onto a multi-lane highway moving all the way to the far left lane when my engine completely went quiet and seemed to quit working. The car all of a sudden shifted into Neutral and started losing speed. I had to put my hazard lights on and cross back across the lanes to get back over to the emergency lane on the right all while losing speed. We were all pretty scared because the Suburban just seemed to quit working and wasn't responding. I'm thankful we were able to get safely to the emergency lane before the car completely stopped. Once I was in the emergency lane, I tried to see if the car would go back into Drive position but it would not. I turned the car off and waited about a minute and tried to power it back on but the only thing that worked was the electrical stuff in the car (the screen for my dashboard and car play/nav system) and the engine remained quiet. Once the tow truck arrived an hour later, the worker tried to jump the engine but it did not respond. It was obviously scary and has been a huge inconvenience but it also left us in a very unfortunate situation because we were in a different state and did not know the area or anyone nearby that could come and pick us up once the tow truck arrived. I was pretty much stranded with my 2 daughters and all of our luggage in a different state on the side of the road.

The “add engine oil” light kept coming on and I initially thought it was because they forgot to reset it after my oil change because my car wasn’t reading it was due for one. I came to find out that my car is likely burning excess oil, according to the dealership, since all of the oil was gone. GM says that it’s normal to burn oil and as long as it’s up to 2 quarts between oil changes it’s fine. The dealership recommended that I get oil consumption test and sometimes it burned more oil than normal and other times it did not. We had to go every 1,000 miles which was an issue because it’s our main vehicle for family transportation and sometimes I would have to go under 1,000 miles because we needed it for a longer trip and would be over if waited until we got back. Also, my engine fan was making a very loud noise that would run for a while after my car was turned off and I was told multiple times it was fine until one time they checked it and it was indeed an engine malfunction and my engine would overheat when I went above a certain speed. The first fix wasn’t right and had to go back. I wasn’t burning enough oil to warrant GM to do anything.

Also, my engine fan was making a very loud noise that would run for a while after my car was turned off and I was told multiple times it was fine until one time they checked it and it was indeed an engine malfunction and my engine would overheat when I went above a certain speed. The first fix wasn’t right and had to go back. I wasn’t burning enough oil to warrant GM to do anything.

6.2 liter engine that seized without prior warning or indication. Has been blown up since 12/24/24. Vehicle is currently sitting at the Chevy dealer. Dealer has stated the engine failure was solely seized connecting rod bearings. GM has denied the claim stating the vehicles has 62,000 miles on it, putting it 2,000 miles out of warranty. Numerous calls and emails to GM directly. Dealer claims no one has reached out to them from GM since warranty declined. GM is stating the dealer hasn’t responded to them and that there isn’t anything they can do at this time. GM is also refusing to purchase the vehicle back.

As I was driving, in July of 2024. I noticed that that I had a traction control system warning on my dashboard. I didn’t think of it to been serious. Then all sudden the engine kind stalled. So the car wasn’t going passed 40 miles per hour. So I managed to take it to dealership. Once there the technician mentioned to me that I wasn’t alone with this type of engine failure. He added and showed me another suburban with the issue. He said that the engine needs to be completely replaced. Because there is metal in the the oil pan. He added the cost of the repair would be $8000 to $12000. So that’s when I decided to take the car to the automation Chevy dealership. They confirmed the issue and charged me $8200 to fix it. I really expected GM to cover the cost. But I was that they would not. Upon further research I found out that that many people had the same engine issue. I am hoping that the government should take action to investigate these engines failures. I think GM failed his customers especially in the COVID era of 21 and 22. Thx

However, this time, there were also unusual noises coming from the vehicle. It wouldn’t accelerate, kept shaking, and multiple warning lights appeared on the dashboard, such as Engine, Traction, and ESC. The issue occurred as I tried to move forward after waiting at a red light. Since I had experienced this problem before, I immediately pulled over to a safe spot, ensuring our safety. I took the car to a different nearby mechanic. The mechanic stated that this is a common problem with these vehicles and that they encounter it quite often. I explained the previous incident I had experienced. The mechanic confirmed that the engine needed to be replaced. I purchased a new engine from Chevrolet and had it installed by the mechanic. I have already submitted a complaint to you regarding my other vehicle, which is the same model and year. I own two 2022 Suburbans, and both had their engines replaced within the past two months. The removed engines were sent to Chevrolet, but I have not received any information regarding the condition or cause of failure.

However, if this had happened in heavy traffic, it could have posed a significant danger, as the vehicle’s power dropped dramatically, and it all happened very suddenly. I took the car to a mechanic. Initially, the fuel injector was replaced, but the problem persisted, and the mechanic recommended an engine replacement. After that, I went to an authorized service center, and they also recommended an engine replacement. I purchased a new engine from Chevrolet and had the mechanic install it. The mechanic told me that this is a common issue and mentioned that two other Suburban engines were replaced this year. My next complaint will also be related to my second vehicle, which is the same model Suburban, experiencing similar issues. I own two 2022 Suburbans, and both have had their engines replaced in the past two months. The removed engines were sent to Chevrolet, but I have not received any information regarding their condition or the cause of the failure.
