2015 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN Complaints and Recall Information

The 2015 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN has 15 complaints and 16 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to electrical system failures, transmission malfunctions, steering problems, and brake system concerns. Several complaints mention persistent safety system warnings and vehicle power loss.

Common Issues

  • Electrical system failure. Owners report the Side Detection System warning light activating followed by dashboard gauges failing, doors and windows locking, and various warning messages. The vehicle can still drive but electrical systems remain on after the engine is turned off and the vehicle sometimes fails to restart until sitting unused for an extended period.
  • Active Fuel Management damage. The 5.3L V8 engine lifters fail, specifically in the number 7 cylinder, requiring costly repairs. A class action lawsuit is related to this defect in engines from 2014 to 2021.
  • Transmission failure. Reports include transmission giving out after a few minutes of operation, erratic revving between 20-30 mph, and complete dropping out of gear causing the vehicle to roll to a stop.
  • Torque converter malfunction. The torque converter fails requiring replacement, linked to transmission issues correlated with certain mileage ranges.
  • Brake pedal stiffness. Brake pedal becomes unusually hard to depress, greatly reducing braking ability. This problem persists despite prior recall repairs and poses potential safety risks.
  • Steering power loss. Steering wheel stiffens and power assist is intermittently lost with multiple warning lights including check engine, seat belt, stabili-trak, and ABS illuminating, sometimes resulting in vehicle tows and expensive repairs without resolution.
  • Acceleration failure. Vehicle suddenly stops accelerating at highway speeds causing impacts with interior components and overheating. Diagnostic codes indicate transmission and torque converter clutch circuit faults, requiring major repairs.
  • Blind spot detection false alerts. The blind side detection system frequently activates without any actual threat, distracting the driver.
  • Odometer fraud and emissions tampering. Cases of missing catalytic converters with cut wires and false mileage readings indicate potential odometer fraud involving dealer sales.
  • Repeated brake system issues. Brake pedal stiffening recurs in circumstances such as slow parking maneuvers or slight inclines, causing concerns for basic stopping capability during normal driving.

There are 16 recalls affecting this model, covering systems such as airbags, power steering, transmission, brakes, and electronic stability control. The recalls address defects that increase risks of injury, fire, steering failure, and unintended vehicle movement.

Recalls

  • Roof rail airbags. (NHTSA Recall 14V451000, 22 vehicles) Faulty attachment hardware may puncture or tear side curtain airbags reducing crash protection. GM will replace the hardware free of charge.
  • Transmission oil cooler line. (14V152000, 489,936 vehicles) A loose cooler line fitting may leak transmission oil on hot surfaces causing fire risk. Dealers will inspect and repair as needed at no cost.
  • Ignition lock actuator binding. (15V640000, 3,073 vehicles) Actuator may bind causing difficult key turning or stuck in "Start" position, risking sudden power loss and airbag non-deployment. GM will replace the ignition lock housing free.
  • Electric power steering loss. (14V719000, 679 vehicles and 18V586000, 1,015,918 vehicles) EPS may suddenly fail causing loss of steering assist and increased crash risk. Dealers will replace motor kits or update EPS software at no charge.
  • Transfer case shifting to neutral. (14V374000, 392,459 vehicles) Electrical shorts may cause transfer case to shift to neutral unexpectedly, risking rollaway or loss of drive power. Reprogramming control software will be done free.
  • Brake vacuum pump reduction. (19V645000, 3,456,719 vehicles) Vacuum pump output can diminish over time reducing brake assist and increasing stopping distances. Dealers will update brake control module software with no charge.
  • Electronic brake control module error. (19V761000, 652,967 vehicles) Wheel-speed sensor failure may cause unintended braking and vehicle pull increasing crash risk. GM will reprogram EBCM software at no cost.
  • Airbag and seat belt pretensioner non-deployment. (16V651000 and 17V437000, over 3.6 million vehicles) Faulty air bag sensing and diagnostic module software may prevent frontal airbags and pretensioners from deploying during a crash. GM will update or replace the software and modules free of charge.
  • Seat belt pretensioner software update. (17V437000, 40,683 vehicles) Partial prior software updates may leave vehicles vulnerable to airbag and pretensioner failure. Complete software reflashing and module replacement where required will be performed free.

Owners contending with repeated repairs for power steering loss, transmission and brake failures, or unresolved recall issues should review their potential rights under state lemon laws. Persistent safety-related defects merit consultation with qualified legal counsel to understand available remedies.

SERVICE BRAKES

If I pull up to a parking spot and I’m slowly creeping into the spot, say at a popular supermarket, and slowing down the brake pedal stiffens up and it’s almost impossible to press. I feel like my truck may not stop. If I’m on a slight incline and in a line behind another vehicle, I’ve noticed the brake pedal stiffens up then as well. Awhile ago I thought there was a recall for this for my truck and it was something about the vacuum in the brake pedal. This is a super problem. I have five kids and we are on the road a lot. This has been happening a lot but most recently would be today.

The transmission was acting weird and felt like it was revving up and down while going 20-30 mph. After turning into my neighborhood there was a loud clunck like some dropped off the truck and it completely fell out of gear and just rolled to a stop. Shifted it into park, turned the truck off and back on and put it back in drive it went into gear and allowed me to drive to my house but still acted like it was about to drop out of gear completely again. My neighbor has a 2015 Silverado and 2017 Tahoe and both transmissions did the same thing and had to be replaced, all between 100-125k miles. The blind side system constantly goes off when there’s no threat
