2013 CHEVROLET SONIC Complaints and Recall Information
The 2013 CHEVROLET SONIC has 4 complaints and 9 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to fires, ignition key malfunctions, airbag non-deployment, and problems with the catalyst monitor. Some complaints mention the vehicle catching fire and the ignition key getting stuck even when the gear shift indicator shows park.
- Fuel tank fire risk. One owner reported the car caught fire unexpectedly and mentioned a voluntary recall concerning faulty welding in the fuel tank that could cause fires.
- Ignition key stuck. The key can remain stuck in the ignition switch due to gear shift indicator errors showing park and drive simultaneously, requiring multiple attempts to release it.
- Airbag non-deployment. After an impact, airbags failed to deploy, which led to increased injury, raising concerns about airbag system reliability.
- Catalyst monitor errors. The vehicle enters catalyst monitor checks too early, causing false failure readings despite the catalyst functioning within normal parameters based on sensor and gas analyzer tests.
The 2013 CHEVROLET SONIC has nine recalls affecting various systems including exterior lighting, the fuel system, electrical components, and the airbag system. These recalls involve issues such as undetected turn signal failures, faulty fuel tank mounting, malfunctioning brake lamps, potential electrical shocks from heater cords, and defective airbag inflators.
- Turn signal system. (NHTSA recall 12V454000; 4716 vehicles) The Body Control Module fails to detect when a turn signal lamp does not operate causing a risk of crashes. GM will reprogram the BCM and key fobs at no cost starting October 2012.
- Fuel tank mounting bracket. (NHTSA recall 13V464000; 1558 vehicles) Insufficient welds on the front fuel tank strap bracket may cause it to separate leading to fuel leaks and possible fires. Owners will receive inspections and necessary repairs free of charge as of November 2013.
- Brake lamp malfunction. (NHTSA recall 13V220000; 10210 vehicles) Brake lamps may flash intermittently without braking and cruise control can disengage unexpectedly, increasing crash risk. Dealers will reprogram the body control module starting June 2013.
- Engine block heater cord. (NHTSA recall 14V417000; 2990 vehicles) Insulation on the oil pan/block heater cord can degrade in cold weather exposing wires and increasing shock risk. Dealers will replace the cord free of charge from August 2014.
- Driver-side airbag inflator. (NHTSA recall 23V516000; 767 vehicles) Defective inflators may explode during deployment causing serious injury or death. GM will replace the airbag module free of charge with owner notifications starting October 2023.
- Key-in-ignition warning chime. (NHTSA recall 16V257000; 317572 vehicles) Radios may fail to chime when the key is left in the ignition after the vehicle is turned off, increasing theft risk. Dealers will update the radio software at no charge.
Owners who face repeated repairs, unresolved recall issues, or safety-related defects with the 2013 CHEVROLET SONIC may want to explore their rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a legal professional can help determine the best course of action.

Vehicle enters into catalyst monitor too early. Monitor Fales indicating that the catalyst is below efficiency threshold. A vehicle is run for a significant amount of time before being allowed to enter the driving conditions for the catalyst monitor, monitor will pass. This indicates that there is a programming failure, not an actual component failure. Theory has been tested multiple times. Catalyst had also been tested by temperature sensor as well as by taking readings with a gas analyzer before and after the catalyst. Everything indicates the catalyst is well within operating parameters. Theories, test, and confirmations have been conducted by a certified technician and mechanical engineer.

On 7-27-2023 General Motors issued a recall on 2013 models of Sonic, my VIN was not included in this recall. However on 4-16-2025 my sonic was involved in a impact incident in which the air bags should have deployed, and did not. It is my opinion that Chevy, knowing of the issues with the model of car, should have issued a recall for my vehicle as well, but did not. As a result I suffered additional strain and injury during my impact as no airbags deployed.

UNKNOWN. Our car caught fire but I'm not sure what actually caused it, it was in perfect working condition before. I saw articles online saying there was a voluntary recall due to faulty welding in the fuel tank so it could be that. I believe it's a dangerous defect and should be an official recall. My family and I almost lost our lives because of it
