The 2021 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 3500 has 5 complaints and 8 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the tailgate opening unexpectedly, sometimes during inclement weather or while the vehicle is parked. Common Issues
  • Tailgate malfunctions. Tailgates open independently while vehicle is parked or in motion without warning lights, risking cargo loss and potential accidents. Incidents occur during rain or normal conditions.
  • Transmission control software. Software updates meant to monitor transmission valve failures do not fully resolve rear wheel lock-up risks, raising safety concerns.
  • Dealer repairs and costs. Dealers have diagnosed codes related to tailgate switches and adjusted latches, but repairs are sometimes costly and considered insufficient by owners.

There are 8 recalls related to the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 affecting various systems including powertrain, tailgate mechanisms, seat belts, and braking components. These recalls address defects that may impact safety through electronic failures, unsecured cargo loss, restraint issues, and fire risks.

Recalls
  • Transmission control valve (24V797000). Affects 463,295 vehicles. Transmission control valve may fail causing rear wheels to lock, increasing crash risk. Dealers will install new transmission control module software free of charge. Owner notifications began December 12, 2024.
  • Tailgate latch (24V060000). Affects 570,434 vehicles. Electronic gate-release switch may short circuit from water intrusion causing tailgate to unlatch unexpectedly while in park. This could result in unsecured cargo loss and crash risk. Dealers will replace exterior touchpad switch assemblies at no charge. Owner notification began May 17, 2024.
  • Front-row center seat belt brackets (20V792000). Affects 624,216 vehicles. Seat belts may not be properly secured to seat frames, reducing occupant restraint effectiveness and increasing injury risk. Dealers will inspect and reassemble brackets for free. Recall began January 26, 2021.
  • Seat belts bolt fasteners (20V811000). Affects 470 vehicles. Incorrect bolts may have been used securing seat belts, risking improper restraint during crashes. Dealers will replace suspect bolts free of charge. Owners were notified starting January 29, 2021.
  • Electric brake control module (21V758000). Affects 3,241 vehicles. Improperly tightened bolts on brake pressure modulator valve may allow water intrusion causing electrical shorts and fire risk. Owners advised to park outdoors away from structures until repair. Dealers will replace BPMV assembly free of charge. Notifications began October 20, 2021.

Owners coping with repeated repairs, safety system defects, or unresolved recall issues may have rights under state lemon law statutes. Consulting a qualified attorney specializing in lemon law may help clarify available legal options.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Our tailgate would open on its own intermittingly. We haul our fifth wheel camper and this could cause damage to the RV and our vehicle. There have been recalls on one year older trucks and one year newer but not for the 2021Chevrolet Silverado. A Chevrolet dearlership in Florida looked at it for us. They said cause : checked for codes and bulletins. Found code B153D. Completed circuit check. Also found tailgate hatch out of adjustment. Corrctionj: Rec. replace switch and adjust latch. We were charged $486.05 for this. We feel this should be a recall problem. Please advise.

Tailgate opens by itself. This happened 3 times in 2 hours while the vehicle was parked. I tow a 5th-wheel trailer. If this happens when towing it can cause a catastrophe.

POWER TRAIN

This is regarding 24V797. A software update to "monitor" for transmission valve failure is not a resolution to a problem that could pose a sever risk to my safety on a very expensive truck.
