POWER TRAIN

In December of 2024 Safety Recall N2424440-01 was applied. On the morning of Saturday August 23, 2025 while driving on a two (2) lane highway with the cruise control set to 60 MPH the vehicle “shuttered” then the shifted into a lower gear locking the rear wheels bringing the vehicle to an almost complete stop in very short distance. I was able to pull off the road out of traffic. Since it was a light traffic morning, no one else was close limiting the risk to me. Had there been anyone behind me they would have been caught off guard by the sudden stop with no signal of brake lights showing. The vehicle is in “limp mode” and will not exceed 35 or 40 MPH. The vehicle will shift in to park and neutral. It will not move in reverse forward. The vehicle has been transported to the nearest Chevrolet dealership for diagnostics and service.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

The tailgate on my truck is electrically opened & closed. I've been having trouble with the tailgate opening randomly, even while driving. This has happened multiple times and can create a very dangerous situation, especially if i'm hauling something in the bed of the truck and it could possibly fall out if the tailgate were to open. Once i was hauling a bunk bed and the tailgate opened without me knowing it. Fortunately, we were driving through town on a flat road when it happened & nothing fell out. Someone behind me pulled up beside me to let me know my tailgate just opened. I recently took my truck to my local Chevy dealer & they said there was no recall on it & they wanted $170 for them just to look at it. I looked online and see recall# N232426400 for it but i've never received a notice & the dealer says there is no recall on it for my truck. (I have a video of it opening & closing by itself but it's too large to send you)

GM has acknowledged the problem and has issued a recall on transmissions effecting 2020 – 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 Heavy Duty trucks equipped with diesel engines manufactured between January 28, 2019 – January 11, 2022. Our truck, a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, was taken in to D’arcy Chevrolet in Morris, IL to have Recall N242454440 – Momentary rear wheel lock-up – Transmission and Engine Control Module Programming with SP. Under this recall dealers will install new transmission control module software, free of charge. GM will provide a special coverage program to cover the repair of transmissions that are identified by the remedy software as containing a defective control valve. After the recall service was performed we were told by the dealership that the transmission needed to be replaced. It clearly states under the recall performed that GM is to provide special coverage to cover repairs that are identified by the remedy software as containing a defective control valve. Also, by law, dealers are never to charge for recall repairs. But GM and the D’Arcy Chevrolet are refusing to cover the repair costs for the transmission under special coverage program.

STRUCTURE:BODY

The tailgate opens by randomly. I was in a CVS parking lot walking towards my car and saw the tailgate open without any commands. A young kid running towards his mother's car was just able to avoid running into it and getting 'clotheslined'. Another vehicle found it necessary to drive around the tailgate protruding from the parking spot. I have been finding the tailgate down multiple times, and thought I may have left it open even when I was sure I didn't. I also shut my tailgate recently and noticed I have a large dent in the tailgate itself when I closed it. It may have opened on another vehicle, or it was open when I was backing up assuming it was closed. After reading online I came across many owners having the exact same problems with the exact same truck. GM has told me the problem is VIN specific, and my VIN was not listed; therefore, no recall notice ever sent out to me.

My truck has been having the "Shift To Park" warning for quite a while now. Truck has roughly 72000 miles. Before it would happen intermediately, now it happens all the time. Often I have to leave my truck unlocked for long periods of time due to this malfunction. Hoping my battery will still have power to restart the next time. Reading and researching this issue online, it is a known fact that this is a widespread problem and GM needs to step up and issue a recall.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The tailgate on our truck keeps automatically coming down and up on its own. It doesn’t matter if the truck is in park or drive. It doesn’t matter if it’s locked or unlocked. It will do it several times in a row. It will go half way back up and then just slam down. Unfortunately we didn’t know this was an issue as we just bought the truck a few days before we noticed it happening and it fell down and hit something in our garage causing a dent and multiple scratches as it happened overnight without us being aware of the issue. It happens when I’m going down the road, which means I cannot use the bed of my truck as things could fall out. Also, I’m limited on where I can park it. We called GM and a dealership and there’s nothing they can do since it’s not recalled unless we pay to have it fixed. So now we have a new to us truck that’s now dented because of this issue. There is no warning it’s going to happen. After the tailgate comes down I get a notification saying tailgate down when I’m driving. This happens everyday, several times a day and we’re having to avoid driving it when possible due to this issue.

The current recall for the defective transmission valve does not address the safety issue with the vehicle. This a known issue with the truck and the transmission valve should be replaced rather than simply monitoring it. My safety and the vehicles I share the road may be at risk if the software upgrade limits the drivability while pulling a trailer on interstate highways. The life span of this vehicle is well beyond the allotted 150,000 miles of coverage and to not extend this "special coverage" beyond the original owner makes this a safety hazard to future owners of the vehicle as wellupgrade .GM is calling the software a "service correction" when in reality they are making no correction, just monitoring the problem.

In certain GMC and Chevrolet Models 2019 to 2025 it is common knowledge and easily found on the web that there is a manufacturer defect that does not allow the vehicle to be placed in “park” properly due to defective parts in the steering column that do not allow the vehicle to safely turn off fully. The module does not seat and the vehicle will remain on in auxiliary. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RTcX-j3R5OQ . Again the link is an example but this defect is rampant.

Originally Chevrolet offered a 2 phase approach for this recall. First phase was to install monitoring software in the ECU and TCU to monitor for early transmission control valve premature wear. Second phase was to actually replace the suspect valve. I've just received a second correspondence from Chevrolet for this recall, now only offering Phase 1, TCU and ECU monitoring software installation. So if the monitoring software detects premature valve failure, the vehicle will be limited to 5th gear. I don't think limiting a vehicle to 5 our of 10 gears is a safe solution. If I'm on the freeway, towing 10,000 lbs, and my vehicle is limited to 5th gear, I may have to travel a very long time at way below posted speed limits before I can get to a dealer for repair. As we all know, travelling on the freeway at lower than posted speed limits can be just as dangerous as travelling above posted speed limits. And in fact, here in Idaho, if you're travelling below posted speed limits you can be fined just as if you were exceeding speed limits. I feel Chevrolet's original solution is the best. Replace the suspect valve proactively instead of actually waiting for it to fail which can possibly cause an unsafe condition.

Engine Code P10D9. Electrical harness to the DEF tank melted. My truck was not part of the GM recall but clearly effects more vehicles than they believe. See NHTSA report N212342980. Spoke with Chevy customer service today and they stated the wiring harness melting is not covered under warranty. This is a fire hazard that GM should remedy. The recall is clearly larger than 38,000 vehicles. Are we supposed to drive the vehicles and not know if they will catch fire or not? I spoke with a technician at Milnes Chevy in Imlay city today and he stated that he sees so many of these trucks that were not under the recall having the same issue with melted wiring harness.
