2016 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 Complaints and Recall Information
The 2016 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 has 12 complaints and 9 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report transmission problems including the need for rebuilds and torque converter failures. Other common issues include engine stalling, steering concerns, and warning light activations.
Common Issues- Engine stalling. The motor runs poorly and then abruptly stops without other symptoms, sometimes accompanied by check engine lights with specific diagnostic trouble codes.
- Transmission failure. Reports include complete transmission replacements or rebuilds often due to torque converter issues, even at comparatively low mileage.
- Transmission shift problems. Shifting difficulties and erratic speeds occur, sometimes causing overheating and unsafe driving conditions.
- Steering concerns. Loose steering or play in the system has been reported along with steering gear box leaks leading to vehicle shaking and sudden pulling.
- Check engine light. Activation coincides with other mechanical failures like transmission or engine issues.
- High repair costs. Transmission and engine repairs including camshaft damage have cost thousands of dollars for some owners.
- Fuel system malfunction. The fuel pump or relay reportedly overheats and causes the engine to shut off while driving.
- Warning codes and repairs. Some repairs involved replacement of tank reservoir and related modules without fully resolving the problem.
There are 9 recalls affecting various safety and mechanical systems on the vehicle. These recalls address air bag inflator defects, seat belt pretensioner malfunctions, brake pedal issues, and needed software updates to the air bag sensing modules.
Recalls- Roof-rail air bag inflator. (NHTSA recall 21V504000, 410,019 vehicles) The inflator end cap may detach or rupture, allowing components to be propelled inside the vehicle, increasing injury risk. Dealers replace both side roof-rail air bag modules free of charge.
- Seat belt pretensioner software defect. (NHTSA recall 16V651000, 3,640,162 vehicles) A software issue can prevent frontal air bags and pretensioners from deploying during a crash, increasing injury risk. Dealers reflash the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software or replace the SDM if previous deployment occurred.
- Frontal air bag software inactive module. (NHTSA recall 16V651000, same as above) Same defect and fix as seat belt pretensioner issue affecting frontal air bags and seat belts.
- Brake pedal pivot nut loosening. (NHTSA recall 18V578000, 42,280 vehicles; and 16V069000, 430,771 vehicles) Loosened nuts can cause brake pedal to become loose or inoperative, risking inability to stop or accelerator interference. Dealers add adhesive and reinstall the nut with increased tightness at no cost.
- Incomplete air bag software update. (NHTSA recall 17V437000, 40,683 vehicles) Vehicles previously remedied may not have received full software updates, risking non-deployment of frontal air bags and pretensioners during a crash. Dealers reflash the SDM software or replace the module when needed.
Owners dealing with repeated transmission and engine repairs or vehicles subject to ongoing safety-related recalls may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Reviewing repair history and recall compliance is advisable when considering legal options.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture.
Risk: A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGES
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, 1500 Crew Cab Special Service, Tahoe Police Pursuit/Special Service, GMC Sierra 2500, and 3500 vehicles. The brake pedal pivot nut may loosen, causing the brake pedal to be loose or inoperative.
Risk: If the brake pedal becomes loose or inoperative, the driver may be unable to stop the vehicle by using the brake pedal. Additionally, a loose pedal may also interfere with the accelerator pedal. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
Risk: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
