2011 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2011 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 has 10 complaints and 8 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report engine misfire issues related to the 4-cylinder software, along with incidents of stalling and air bag deployment without impact. Several complaints describe engine failure due to lifter spring and cam rod breakage. There is also a report of the front passenger air bag deploying unexpectedly while the vehicle was parked.

Common Issues
  • Engine misfire. The 4-cylinder software causes the engine light to turn on and triggers code P0300 for various misfires.
  • Lifter spring failure. The lifter spring remains in the down position, causing the lifter and cam rod to break and potentially leading to engine failure.
  • Recurring repairs. The affected parts tend to fail approximately every 50,000 miles, requiring frequent replacement.
  • Increased fuel consumption. Some owners disable the 4-cylinder software to avoid misfires, resulting in higher gas usage and increased idle speed.
  • Unexpected air bag deployment. The front passenger air bag deployed spontaneously while the vehicle was parked and off, with prior intermittent air bag warning light illumination.
  • Air bag module failure. Dealers have replaced the SDM module during recall repairs due to air bag system faults.
  • Stalling and fuel pump issues. The vehicle stalled multiple times soon after purchase, requiring fuel pump replacement; stalling occurred again shortly after the repair.
  • Safety hazard during stall. Stalling incidents occurred in high traffic areas, leaving occupants vulnerable when the vehicle lost power unexpectedly.

The 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has eight recalls addressing several safety components including rear axle issues and passenger air bag inflators. These recalls focus on preventing potential loss of vehicle control and reducing injury risks from air bag inflator explosions. Repairs typically involve replacement of faulty components at no cost to the owner.

Recalls
  • Rear axle cross pins (10V643000, 11V007000). Approximately 31,000 vehicles are affected by rear axle cross pins that were not properly heat treated. The pins may fracture, potentially causing the rear axle to lock and resulting in loss of directional control and crash risk. Dealers will install new cross pins free of charge. No "Do Not Drive" advisory was issued.
  • Passenger air bag inflator (21V050000, 21V054000). Over 4 million vehicles across multiple model years face recall due to non-desiccated passenger frontal inflators with phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate that may explode after exposure to humidity and temperature cycling. Explosions can send metal fragments into the vehicle cabin, risking serious injury or death. Dealers will replace the inflators free of charge. No immediate driving restrictions are in place, but owners are being notified in phases as replacements become available.

Owners dealing with repeated engine failures, unexpected air bag deployment, or unresolved recall issues may have protections under state lemon laws. Legal consultation could provide guidance on rights related to these ongoing safety and reliability concerns.

After 2 weeks of owning the truck which we are paying on it had to be towed 3 times stalling out and leaving leaving my family,my children with us at least once, and stranded in high traffic roads. We took it back to the dealership and they replaced the fuel pump and the fuel light came came on the very same day we picked it up. Now over a week after getting it back it has stranded us again, this time with our 3 children with us. This is on a Friday evening during rush hour. We manage to pull to a side road and off to the side a bit,but not fully. People are driving by very fast now as we wait for a tow.

WHEELS

The software that makes the truck work as a 4 cylinder truck has caused the engine light to come on and causing a code P0300 various engine misfire. The misfire is caused by the lifter spring causing the lifter to remain in the down position. The down position is against the can rod and as the cam rod rotates, this causes the lifter to break at the bottom and causing the can rod to also break which will cause an engine failure while drinking and the motor will freeze . All GMC and Chevrolet vehicles with this installed should be recalled. Everyone has been fixing it themselves by replacing the part(s) once a pinging noise is heard at 50,000 miles. Basically every 50,000 this will need to be fixed. Some people are turning off the 4 cylinder software to avoid the problem which in both cases, uses more gas and also idles higher.
