2018 CHEVROLET EXPRESS Complaints and Recall Information

The 2018 CHEVROLET EXPRESS has 1 complaint and 7 recalls filed with NHTSA. The owner reported warning messages for "service Stabilitrak" and "service traction control" appearing frequently in the Driver Information Center. The emergency brake warning light also activates occasionally when the brake is off. Multiple dealer inspections confirmed the issue but no repair resolved the problem. Chevrolet headquarters acknowledged the issue and partially covered dealer costs.

Common Issues

  • Stabilitrak and traction control warnings. The vehicle displays persistent service warning messages on these systems causing safety concerns due to uncertain functionality.
  • False emergency brake warning. The emergency brake light activates despite the brake being released, contributing to confusion about system status.

There are 7 recalls affecting various vehicle systems including visibility, equipment, tires, electrical systems, and safety devices. The recalls address both safety defects and regulatory compliance issues.

Recalls

  • Rear-quarter tempered glass. Recall 19V387000 affects 1,159 vehicles. Rear-quarter windows may be tempered glass instead of laminated, increasing injury risk in crashes. GM will replace glass free of charge.
  • Backup camera monitors. Recall 19V428000 covers 325 vehicles. Monitors may revert to factory settings causing reversed camera images, increasing crash risk. Manufacturers will notify owners and provide fixes at no cost.
  • Tire defects. Recall 21V115000 involves 33,838 vehicles. Tires were over cured during production, risking sudden air loss or tread separation. GM will inspect and replace affected tires free of charge.
  • Rear climate control module overheating. Recall 18V655000 affects 30,448 vehicles. An electrical short in the CCM may cause overheating and fire risk. Dealers will remove insulation to prevent fire hazards at no charge.
  • Tire pressure monitoring calibration. Recall 18V509000 includes 94 vehicles. The TPMS may trigger warnings at incorrect pressures, reducing warning time. Dealers will reprogram systems free of charge.
  • Fire extinguisher malfunction. Recall 18V267000 covers 6,154 vehicles. Certain extinguisher models may clog or detach the nozzle, preventing use during fires. Owners will receive replacement extinguishers at no cost.

Owners facing ongoing diagnostic issues with safety systems or unresolved recall repairs may have rights under state lemon laws. Consulting with a consumer protection attorney could clarify options available for repeated or serious defects.

The affected tires were cured for too long during production.

Risk: Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

VISIBILITY:GLASS, SIDE/REAR

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2019 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles. One or both of the rear-quarter windows may be tempered glass instead of laminated glass. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 226, "Ejection Mitigation."

Risk: Tempered glass increases the risk of injury in the event of a side impact or rollover crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Chevrolet Express and GMC Sierra vehicles equipped with a single, manual, rear climate control module (CCM). If the temperature is set to maximum heat or the mode knob is set to maximum floor vent and an electrical short occurs, components within the CCM may overheat.

Risk: If the CCM overheats, there is an increased risk of a fire in the vehicle's headliner.

EQUIPMENT

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2009-2014 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, 2009 GMC Topkick 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 Series and Isuzu F Series, and 2009-2018 Chevrolet Express, and GMC Savana vehicles, equipped with certain Plastic-Handle Fire Extinguishers or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

Risk: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

18V509000

TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles with certain combinations of front-tire and gross-vehicle-weight option codes. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may be incorrectly calibrated, causing the TPMS warning lamp to illuminate when tire pressure reaches 37 PSI, not 41 PSI. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."

Risk: If the low tire pressure telltale is not illuminated at the correct tire pressure, the driver may have less time to react to a low-tire-pressure situation, which could affect the driver's ability to control the vehicle in certain situations and could increase the risk of a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

While travelling down the road the "service Stabilitrak" and "service traction control" messages come on in the Driver Information Center and the lights for each component are lit in the dashboard. On occasion, the emergency brake light comes when I know the emergency brake is off. My safety is at risk because I'm not sure if the lights are indicating a problem or if the lights are malfunctioning as they come on every time I take a trip in this vehicle. The vehicle has been inspected by three different Chevrolet dealers, one of them three times and no fix has solved the problem. The dealers confirm the problem, but cannot find the solution. Chevrolet headquarters is well aware of the issue and have paid toward some of the dealer charges. The issue has been going since I purchased the vehicle in 2019.
