AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 vehicles. Hard braking or acceleration may cause the sensing diagnostic module (SDM) to enter a fault state. As a result, the SDM will not provide crash sensing or deploy the necessary air bags in the event of a crash.

Risk: In the event of a crash, if the air bags do not deploy as designed, the occupants have an increased risk of injury.

WHEELS:RIM

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, there was a slow leak in the passenger’s side rear wheel. The contact stated that air was added two to three days later, and the tire warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred for two weeks. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer, and four new tires were ordered. While installing the tires, the mechanic became aware that two rear rims were cracked. The contact stated that one rear rim had two cracks, and the other rear rim had three cracks. The dealer had not recommended repairing the rims. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but was unable to help because the contact had missed the deadline to have the cracked rims repaired by January 01, 2025. The failure mileage was approximately 14,500.

POWER TRAIN

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH, the accelerator pedal was depressed, and the vehicle shook and shuddered abnormally. The contact stated that the failure had been constant since purchasing the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact believed that the shudder was due to the high-performance engine. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact stated that during an alignment at a dealer, the service technician informed the contact that the shudder was a known failure caused by the transmission fluid, causing the torque converter to shudder whenever the accelerator pedal was depressed. The technician provided the contact information on TSB: 19-NA-018. The contact stated that the vehicle had not been diagnosed by the service technician using a diagnostic machine. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

POWER TRAIN

A 2019 Corvette with 3,400 miles began to demonstrate a transmission torque converter shutter. This became rapidly and progressively worse causing driving to resemble being on a washboard road surface. The servicing dealer was familiar with the problem with this transmission and did resolve the issue with an expensive transmission fluid flush and exchange.

POWER TRAIN

GM has a well known issue with the transmission fluid used in assembly on a range of cars and dates which include my 2019 Corvette. The fluid used fails/ is defective. The process to fix the issue is to flush the fluid out and put in a different fluid. In the case of my Corvette, it actually requires a very expensive triple flush to ensure all of the original Dexron fluid has been removed and is replaced my Mobil fluid. The process is explained in an 18 page service bulletin 18-NA-355. This bulletin states that if a customer comes in complaining of shake/shudder during acceleration between 25 to 80mph or when the trans is not actively shaking, then there is no need to further diagnose. Just follow the procedure in the service bulletin. In other words, there is no need to investigate further because we already know what the problem is which is the defective Dexron fluid. This was my exact experience with the shake/shudder and the triple flush completely fixed the issue. My vehicle has 17k miles on it so this was no a normal maintenance issue nor would you expect a full flush of transmission fluid at 17k or really at any point. Perhaps adding some fluid at some point would be reasonable. Having to completely remove all traces of the assembly line fluid with a completely different fluid clearly indicates a defect in the original Dexron. The service bulletin clearly indicates GM knows that the Dexron is defective. A final note, a quick web search of this issue will bring up pages of threads of people who have experienced this exact issue. Please hold GM responsible for their error. Thanks

ENGINE

My vehicle has been a legacy gmc dealership in Slidell la for three months now waiting on a replacement engine from a factory failure. And I have no clue when and if I will ever get it back because all General Motors is says is that the engine is on back order and from what I’m reading they discontinued this engine back in 2023. They haven’t helped me with anything I been paying my car note and renting a vehicle at my cost and they’re doing nothing. And I can’t get them to give me any info on if or when this will get fixed . Meanwhile, this is putting a huge financial burden on me and my family and GM doesn’t give [XXX][ about it. Companies like this be allowed to just walk over people with no record of their actions. Thank you for any help with this. I’ve reached out to everyone and no one will help. Thank you. case number [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was smoke coming from the engine compartment. The contact pulled over to the shoulder of the roadway to inspect the vehicle. After a visual inspection of the engine compartment, the contact observed that the #5 and #6 spark plugs had burned and melted. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the high-pressure fuel pump causing the vehicle to run lean, resulting in damages to the engine and spark plugs. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed by the dealer that the manufacturer was no longer producing the 6.2-liter V8 engine for the year, make, and model. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 35,000.
