2017 CHEVROLET CORVETTE Complaints and Recall Information

The 2017 CHEVROLET CORVETTE has 7 complaints and 9 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to wheel cracks causing air leaks and fuel odor from leaks near the fuel pump module flange. Several complaints also mention problems with hard shifting in the transmission. Attention to safety and maintenance concerns is evident from these reports.

Common Issues

  • Wheel cracks. Multiple owners report cracks on wheels, especially on the inner edge of the barrel. Cracks have been found on both front and rear wheels, often difficult to detect, causing slow air leaks and posing safety risks.
  • Fuel leaks. Complaints include fuel odor and fuel loss due to leaks at the primary fuel pump module flange, confirmed by dealership inspections.
  • Transmission shifting problems. Reports of hard shifting in the transmission affecting vehicle performance and drivability.
  • Air pressure loss. Cracked wheels lead to loss of tire air pressure, requiring frequent tire inflation or repair.
  • Wheel material concerns. OEM wheels are cast and prone to cracking under normal road use, especially on wider Grand Sport and Z06 versions, which may require forged wheels for durability.

There are 9 recalls affecting this vehicle, primarily related to the electric power steering system and air bag system components. Repairs address steering assist failures and air bag sensor/control module software defects.

Recalls

  • Electric power steering assist. NHTSA Recall 25V175000 affects 934 vehicles. The EPS assist may fail, increasing steering effort and crash risk. Dealers replace the power steering gear assembly free of charge. No Do Not Drive advisory.
  • Air bag sensing and diagnostic module. NHTSA Recall 16V651000 covers over 3.6 million vehicles including this model. Certain conditions may cause the SDM software to disable frontal air bag and seat belt pretensioner deployment during a crash, risking injury. Dealers reflash software or replace the SDM at no cost. No Do Not Drive advisory.
  • Electric power steering assist (additional recall). NHTSA Recall 19V086000 impacts 26,772 vehicles. EPS assist system failure may require increased steering effort and could lead to a crash. Dealers replace power steering gear assembly free of charge. No Do Not Drive advisory.
  • Incomplete air bag software update. NHTSA Recall 17V437000 affects 40,683 vehicles. Vehicles previously repaired under Recall 16V651000 may lack a complete update, leaving risk of air bag and seat belt pretensioner non-deployment. Dealers reflash software or replace SDM free of charge. No Do Not Drive advisory.

Owners dealing with repeated wheel cracking, transmission issues, or unresolved recall repairs may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Those facing persistent safety defects or repair difficulties should consider consulting with a consumer protection attorney for guidance.

STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Cadillac CTS, 2017-2018 Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Camaro, and Chevrolet Corvette vehicles. The electric power steering (EPS) assist may fail.

Risk: A loss of power steering assist can require greater steering effort, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Cadillac CTS, and 2017 Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Camaro, and Chevrolet Corvette vehicles. The electric power steering (EPS) assist system may fail.

Risk: Loss of power steering assist would require a higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, which may increase the risk of a crash.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

Risk: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

WHEELS

Noticed one wheel kept leaking down slowly. After a couple of weeks of filling the air in the tires, it was down near the warning pressure again on one rear wheel. Decided to remove the wheel to inspect the cause of the leak. Upon removal of the wheel, there were two noticeable cracks on the inner bead diameter of the wheel. I know this has been a big issue for all the C7 GS corvettes, because this is my 4th C7 GS with the same issue. All my previous C7 GS have had all the factory rear wheels to crack. I don't understand why there has not been a recall since every C7 GS I've owned had this same issue on all the rear wheels. I typically do my own repairs unless they are covered under warrant. I have worked on automobiles for over 35 years in my personal garage and it has become an expectation that any C7 GS or Z06 with a rear tire leaking is caused by a cracked wheel. Have contacted Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet in Charlotte NC about the cracked wheel before deciding repair method that will be taken.

WHEELS

Cracks found on 3 of 4 wheels when the wheels were off for cleaning. Cracks are on 2 front wheels and 1 rear. Cracks are located on the inner edge of the barrel, and extend up the edge, then about 0.5 to 1.0in toward the centerline of the wheel. Further cracking could cause loss of air pressure.

WHEELS

It has been well documented that the oem wheels on this model and the Z06 of similar years are of poor quality and crack under normal road use, posing a serious safety hazard. What I learned today, that I was not previously aware of, is that they crack on the inside lip, often extending into the barrel of the wheel. A crack in this location is virtually impossible to detect, especially on black wheels like mine and even though I have my own 2 post lift and routinely inspect the vehicle, I was not aware of 3 cracks in my 2 rear wheel that were discovered at Ciocca, Chevrolet in AC today during a routine alignment with road force balancing at my request. I have attached an invoice to replace both rear wheels that was provided by the dealer. The problem is that GM never addressed this issue with a forged wheel upgrade. The extra wheel width on the Grand Sport and Z06 clearly require a forged wheel to prevent routine cracking under normal use. Oem wheels are cast. As a long time GM buyer with 2 current GM vehicles (corvette and suburban), and 2 past GM vehicles (corvette and tahoe), I expected at least a conversation regarding a sensible next step in making my care usable and capable on road. Instead I was told that there were no open recalls and that there was nothing to be done. GM has built a 200mph capable vehicle, advertised as a track ready, that can't even drive down normal roads, without cracking it's wheels. This poses an extreme safety risk to everyone on the road. The fact that GM is not offering to replace all wheels on affected vehicles is gross negligence.
