  • Abnormal noise and vibration. A report details hearing a strange sound from underneath while driving, followed by abnormal vehicle vibration at approximately 113,000 miles. The issue was not resolved through dealer intervention.

The 7 recalls primarily affect safety systems including airbags, seat belts, and suspension components. Most recalls involve software issues with the air bag sensing and diagnostic module. One recall includes a critical suspension control arm weld defect that has a do not drive advisory.

  • Air bag and seat belt pretensioner software. NHTSA recall 16V651000 affects over 3.6 million vehicles including the 2016 Escalade ESV. Certain driving conditions trigger the air bag sensing module to activate a diagnostic test preventing frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying in a crash, raising injury risk. Owners will receive notification and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles with previous air bag deployment will have the module replaced. Repair is free.
  • Front suspension control arm welds. Recall 16V256000 covers 3,738 vehicles including the 2016 Escalade ESV. Inadequate welds near the front upper control arm bushings may cause separation, compromising steering and increasing crash risk. The recall advises owners not to drive until repairs are completed. Dealers will replace affected components and realign the vehicle at no charge.
  • Incomplete air bag software update. Recall 17V437000 affects 40,683 vehicles including the Escalade ESV. It addresses vehicles that may have missed the complete software update from recall 16V651000. Without the full update, air bags and seat belt pretensioners might not deploy during certain driving conditions. Dealers will reflash the SDM software and replace modules for vehicles with prior deployments. The service is free and ongoing.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs related to these safety recalls or unresolved issues with the suspension weld defect may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a consumer protection attorney familiar with lemon law claims might be advisable.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

Risk: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
