2012 BMW X5 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2012 BMW X5 has 13 complaints and 11 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the driveshaft, coolant leaks, and air bag malfunctions. Several complaints describe problems related to water intrusion affecting vehicle power and traction control. Other common complaints involve restraint system malfunctions and timing chain failures.

Common Issues
  • Driveshaft failure. Front all-wheel-drive driveshaft fails while driving, causing extensive engine and underside damage and creating a risk of accident.
  • Coolant leaks. Coolant leaks noticed under the vehicle with the low coolant warning light illuminated, often linked to coolant pump failure requiring replacement.
  • Fuel system problems. Reports of fuel wire issues accompanied by the smell of gasoline, consistent with a known recall on this model year.
  • Water intrusion. Water enters the vehicle causing reduced power and traction control malfunctions, especially in wet conditions making it unsafe to drive.
  • Restraint system malfunction. Air bag and seatbelt system warnings appear with parts unavailable for repair, raising safety concerns among owners.
  • Passenger seat sensor failure. Front passenger side occupancy seat sensor faults trigger air bag malfunction messages.
  • Timing chain breakage. Timing chain breaks without warning, potentially causing engine damage.

There are 11 recalls for the 2012 BMW X5 affecting various vehicle systems, particularly air bags, the driveshaft, steering, engine cooling, and transmissions. These recalls address safety risks including air bag inflator ruptures, power steering fluid leaks, and engine component failures.

Recalls
  • Transmission parking lock. (NHTSA Recall 12V019000) Six vehicles recalled due to a manufacturing defect where the transmission’s parking lock may fail to engage, risking vehicle rollaway. Dealers replace the transmission free of charge.
  • Power steering fluid leak. (NHTSA Recall 12V267000) Affects 2,642 diesel X5 vehicles. Machining error may cause power steering fluid leaks that could catch fire. Dealers inspect and replace steering gear if necessary.
  • Passenger air bag inflator. (NHTSA Recalls 19V017000, 17V020000, 18V030000, 20V016000) Over 158,000 vehicles recalled across several campaigns for defective passenger air bag inflators that may explode during deployment, sending metal fragments into the cabin. Owners are advised not to drive until repairs, which include free air bag module replacement, are performed.
  • Front driveshaft universal joint. (NHTSA Recall 17V138000) More than 120,000 vehicles recalled due to water and debris causing excessive wear and joint failure, affecting traction and risking crash. Dealers replace the driveshaft free of charge.
  • Driver air bag inflator. (NHTSA Recall 20V017000) Nearly 60,000 vehicles recalled for driver air bag inflators that may explode due to propellant degradation. Repairs involve free replacement of the inflators.
  • Engine idler pulley bolt. (NHTSA Recall 18V336000) Over 33,000 diesel X5 vehicles affected with a risk of the idler pulley bolt breaking and loss of power-assisted steering. Dealers replace the bolt free of charge.
  • Electric auxiliary water pump. (NHTSA Recall 18V248000) Approximately 47,800 vehicles recalled for potential failure of the electric auxiliary water pump that may cause circuit board overheating and increase fire risk. Owners are advised to park outdoors until repair, which includes free pump replacement.

Owners facing repeated repairs, unresolved safety defects, or recall issues with the 2012 BMW X5 may want to explore their rights under their state’s lemon law. These laws may provide protections if the vehicle cannot be reliably fixed or poses ongoing safety risks.

I received a message of Restraint system malfunction and when I called the local dealer I was told the part is not availabel anywhere in the USA. What am I supposed to do with this. I was told the air bags and seatbelts may malfunction. The vehicle only has 85k miles. its a 2012. At this point who will take the car as a trade? It's not safe and they don't have an answer except to say I'm [XXX] and i guess you need to get a new vehicle!! Can you believe this? I have to get a whole new vehicle because they don't have a part! You can't make this stuff up. I spoke with BMW USA and was told they only honor 4yr and 50k miles and after 10years they are not responsible for parts to be made. The I was told to get it further diagnosed to the tune of 250.00 so they can "MAYBE" have the parts manufactured. What the heck! this company is saying our cars are garbage after 10yrs! POWER TRAIN

While driving on highway at 70 MPH, front AWD driveshaft failed and caused massive damage to engine and underside of car is destroyed. The flailing driveshaft punched a hole in engine and oil pan, causing all engine oil to spray on hot exhaust and the tires while driving. Luckily was able to slow car and steer it to shoulder, near miss accident. There is recall 17V-138 on this year of BMW X5 for exact issue that happened to me, but BMW states that my VIN is not affected. Yeah right.
