2022 BMW X4 Complaints and Recall Information
The 2022 BMW X4 has 1 complaint and 4 recalls filed with NHTSA. The sole complaint involves a soft brake pedal that intermittently causes delayed braking and sudden locking, resulting in dangerous vehicle behavior such as veering and difficulty stopping at intersections. The owner noted the issue occurred despite new brakes recently installed and a dealer inspection confirming working order.
Common Issues
- Brake pedal malfunction. The brake pedal goes soft causing delayed brake response. When pressure is applied further, the brakes lock abruptly, making the vehicle veer sharply.
There are four recalls that affect different systems including transmission, tire information, exterior lighting, and labels. These recalls cover a small number of vehicles and focus on defects that could increase crash risk or cause regulatory noncompliance.
Recalls
- Transmission mechatronics unit. NHTSA Recall 22V070000 affects 4 vehicles. The issue involves improper assembly that can cause an internal leak leading to vehicle rollaway. Dealers replace the unit free of charge. No "Do Not Drive" advisory applies.
- Tire information labels. NHTSA Recall 21V646000 impacts 13 vehicles. The tire size and pressure labels may be incorrect, risking improper tires or inflation. Dealers will replace the labels at no cost.
- Rear license plate lighting. NHTSA Recall 21V831000 applies to 2,577 vehicles. The rear license plate may not illuminate properly due to bracket design, increasing crash risk. Dealers modify the bracket for free.
Owners facing repeated brake problems or unresolved safety recalls should consider their rights under applicable lemon laws. They may be entitled to remedies if repair attempts fail or safety risks persist.

On several occasions, the brake pedal has gone soft. Giving you the feeling that you have no breaks. on the highway when this happens, the brake pedal goes soft and then about halfway into the pedal the brakes lock up and the car veerers sharply in one direction or another. On residential street my wife was using this car this morning to take our son to daycare when she applied the brakes and ended up going through a stop sign as the brakes did not grab until she came to an extreme halt in the middle of the intersection, she then said the brakes were functioning but soft for the next 4 to 5 stops after that they went to completely normal. We had the car in a dealer last week before this incident happen where they verified that the brakes were in good working order Please note that the dealer put new brakes on three weeks ago. I’ve done some reading online and found that there’s recalls in other countries for the same problem but for some reason, my vehicle doesn’t have a recall for this. It is extremely scary when it happens.
