2020 BMW X1 Complaints and Recall Information
The 2020 BMW X1 has 3 complaints and 3 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report sudden loss of engine power caused by wastegate actuator turbo failure, accompanied by drivetrain malfunction warnings. One complaint describes a punctured fuel tank from road debris, leading to loss of power.
Common Issues- Wastegate actuator failure. Causes sudden engine power loss and turbo malfunction, often indicated by a drivetrain warning light without prior alert.
- Fuel tank puncture. Plastic fuel tank located low on the right side punctures from road debris, resulting in fuel loss and engine power failure.
Three recalls affect this vehicle with a focus on the air bag system including the air bag control unit and rollover sensor. The defects relate to air bag deployment failures in rollover crashes.
Recalls- Air bag control unit. NHTSA recall 20V283000 affects 76 vehicles. A faulty rollover sensor may prevent deployment of the head air bag, seat belt pretensioners, and other safety systems in rollover crashes. Risk includes increased injury potential. Dealers will replace the control unit free of charge. No "Do Not Drive" or "Park Outside" advisory applies.
Owners who face repeated repairs or unresolved safety defects related to these issues may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a consumer protection attorney could provide guidance on next steps.

The fuel tank got punctured on the freeway causing the car to lose power. The problem seems that BMW plastic fuel tank is located on the right side at the bottom of the car so any stone or particle on the freeway can puncture the plastic tank from the bottom causing no fuel and the car losing power. Seems like that is problem with design and BMW is aware of it since the new models of the car starting 2023 have an extra underbody protection for the fuel tank which is missing on the previous year models.
