2019 BMW X1 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2019 BMW X1 has 5 complaints and 3 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the Emergency Call System malfunctioning, showing intermittent warning messages on the dashboard. Several complaints also describe thermostats leaking and engine mounts failing, which dealers have marked for immediate attention.

Common Issues
  • Emergency call system failure. Dashboard alerts indicate problems with the SOS emergency call system, often appearing irregularly over weeks or months.
  • Battery replacement dispute. One owner reports being denied battery replacement under extended warranty after the coverage expired, with the manufacturer agreeing to cover 50% of the repair cost.
  • Thermostat leaks. Thermostat units have been found leaking engine coolant, a condition requiring immediate service and linked to earlier recalls in similar models.
  • Engine mount failures. Engine mounts failed within six years, considered a serious operational hazard requiring dealer attention.

The vehicle has three recalls that address steering components, occupant protection in crashes, and taillight mounting issues. These recalls affect systems critical to vehicle control, occupant safety, and exterior lighting reliability.

Recalls
  • Steering tie rod assembly. Recall 19V601000 affects 32 vehicles. The tie rod may have been incorrectly assembled, causing excessive wear and possible breakage, which could result in loss of steering control. Dealers will inspect and replace affected parts free of charge. The recall started October 11, 2019.
  • B-pillar interior structure. Recall 19V349000 covers 106,182 vehicles. The B-pillar may fail to absorb enough impact in a crash, increasing injury risk from occupant head contact. BMW will replace the interior trim pieces on the B-pillars at no cost to owners. Notifications began in July 2019 with ongoing parts availability.
  • Taillight housing brackets. Recall 19V074000 involves 5,920 vehicles. Contaminated hardware can crack mounting brackets, risking taillights becoming loose or detached, which could cause visibility issues or road hazards. Dealers will secure the taillights free of charge. The recall began March 28, 2019.

Owners facing repeated repairs, safety defects, or unresolved recall issues should consider their state’s lemon law protections to address ongoing vehicle problems.

STRUCTURE:BODY:ROOF AND PILLARS

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2016-2019 X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i vehicles. In the event of a crash where the occupants head contacts the B-pillar, the pillar may not absorb an adequate amount of the impact. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 201, "Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."

Risk: In the event of a crash, the insufficient impact absorption can increase the risk of injury.

STEERING:LINKAGES:TIE ROD ASSEMBLY

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018-2019 BMW X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, 2019 X2 xDrive28i, MINI Cooper S Convertible, Countryman, and John Cooper Works Countryman vehicles. The steering gear tie rod may have been assembled incorrectly, which may result in excessive wear of the tie rod end, eventually causing it to break.

Risk: A broken steering tie rod would lead to a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018-2019 BMW X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i vehicles. Contaminated hardware may cause the attachment brackets of the taillight housings to crack, causing the lights to loosen or possibly detach from the vehicle.

Risk: If a taillight detaches from the vehicle, it would no longer provide the required lighting to following traffic, or it may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

SUSPENSION

A recall was issued for similar vehicles (X1) but ended with the 2018 model year (Recall 24V-608). This issue continues to be present in the 2019 model year. The thermostats in subsequent year models continue to leak, presenting a hazard. An engine warning lamp triggered an inspection at BMW Honolulu which identified the thermostat leak issue requiring “immediate attention.” In addition, BMW engine mounts in the same model year vehicle have failed in less than 6 years of operation which could present a significant operational hazard. This issue was identified at the same time as the thermostat issue referenced previously. A similar dealer recommendation of “immediate attention,” suggests the severity of the issue. This vehicle has been properly serviced at BMW Honolulu since it was purchased as a certified pre-owned vehicle from BMW Honolulu on October 22, 2022.
