2015 BMW I3 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2015 BMW I3 has 2 complaints and 3 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the carbon fiber roof, which shows sun damage that exceeds normal wear.

Common Issues
  • Roof damage. The carbon fiber roof suffers from accelerated sun damage, deteriorating faster than expected under typical conditions.

Three recalls affect the 2015 BMW I3, involving air bag systems and the fuel delivery system. These recalls address safety components that impact occupant protection and fire risk.

Recalls
  • Passenger air bag inflator module. (NHTSA Recall 15V628000) Affects 6,073 vehicles. The passenger frontal air bag may fail to deploy properly due to a manufacturing error. This defect increases injury risk in low speed crashes. BMW will replace the passenger air bag module at no charge.
  • Fuel system vent line. (NHTSA Recall 17V088000) Involves 19,130 vehicles. The fuel tank vent line can rub against a cable sleeve, creating a hole that causes a fuel vapor leak. This elevates the fire risk. Dealers will inspect and replace the vent line if needed and install a protective clip, free of charge.
  • Driver air bag software update. (NHTSA Recall 17V720000) Covers 32,000 vehicles. Unbelted small adult drivers face increased neck injury risk in frontal crashes due to air bag deployment characteristics. Dealers will update the driver air bag control unit software free of charge.

Owners who face repeated repairs or unresolved recall issues related to safety systems may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a consumer protection attorney can help clarify potential remedies.
