Broken shafts risk drive power loss or rollaway if the parking brake isn’t engaged, raising crash potential. Dealers replace defective shafts free of charge. Started March 24, 2021.
- Rearview camera obstruction. (NHTSA Recall 20V598000, 312 vehicles) A small rearview image portion may be obscured, violating FMVSS 111 standards for rear visibility. Dealers will inspect and, if needed, update the rearview camera software at no cost. Started November 18, 2020.
- Backup camera and display settings. (NHTSA Recall 19V684000, 257,473 vehicles) The back-up camera image can be disabled through display settings retained after shifting into reverse. This results in a lack of rear view and violates FMVSS 111 requirements. BMW will update the camera software free of charge. Recall began November 8, 2019.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 530i xDrive, 540i xDrive and 2021 740Li xDrive vehicles. The output shafts (left/right) which transfer power from the driveshaft to the rear wheels may break due to a heat treatment error during supplier production.
Risk: A broken output shaft can lead to a loss of drive power or a rollaway condition in a parked vehicle (if the parking brake is not engaged), increasing the risk of a crash.
