2010 BMW 5 SERIES Complaints and Recall Information
The 2010 BMW 5 SERIES has 0 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to recalls affecting multiple vehicle systems including the fuel system, brakes, electrical connections, engine components, and emission controls.
There are five recalls affecting this model. These recalls cover a range of systems such as the fuel gauge, brake vacuum pump, battery cable connection, engine timing bolts, and positive crankcase ventilation valve heater. Each recall addresses potential safety risks including engine stalls, braking performance loss, overheating, and fire hazards.
Recalls- Fuel gauge sensor. Recall 10V331000 affects 6,080 vehicles. A sensor inside the fuel tank can wedge against the tank, causing the fuel gauge to show more fuel than is in the tank. The vehicle could stall if the tank becomes empty, raising crash risk. BMW will repair the defect free of charge.
- Brake vacuum pump check valve. Recall 10V446000 covers 198,352 vehicles from model years 2004-2010. A leaking check valve may contaminate the brake booster, reducing or eliminating power assist braking and increasing crash risk. BMW will repair affected vehicles free of charge.
- Battery cable connection. Recall 12V126000 involves 367,682 vehicles. An improperly attached battery cable connector may loosen causing increased electrical resistance and possible overheating. Owners are advised to park outside until fixed. BMW will inspect and secure the connection free of charge.
- VANOS unit bolts. Recall 23V707000 affects 157,796 vehicles from 2010-2012. Aluminum bolts securing the variable camshaft timing unit may loosen or break, risking engine stall which could lead to a crash. Dealers will replace the bolts at no charge.
- PCV valve heater. Recall 22V119000 impacts 917,106 vehicles. The positive crankcase ventilation valve heater may short circuit and overheat, which could cause a fire when driving or parked. The remedy involves installing a wiring harness with fuse protection. Owners with prior repairs must return for this update.
Owners facing repeated repairs, safety defects, or unresolved recall issues with this vehicle may have rights under their state’s lemon law.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY:CABLES
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 5-SERIES, MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 6-SERIES, MODEL YEAR 2006-2010 M5, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 M6 VEHICLES. THE INSULATED BULKHEAD CONNECTOR FOR THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY ATTACHED TO THE TRUNK FLOOR PANEL, WHICH CAN LEAD TO A LOOSENING OF THE BOLT CONNECTION. AS IT LOOSENS, AN INCREASE IN ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE AT THIS CABLE CONNECTION IS POSSIBLE AND COULD CAUSE THE CABLE CONNECTION TO OVERHEAT.
Risk: OVERHEATING COULD LEAD TO A FIRE, EVEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS NOT IN USE. AS A PRECAUTION, OWNERS ARE ADVISED TO PARK OUTSIDE UNTIL THE REMEDY HAS BEEN MADE.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 5-SERIES, 6-SERIES, AND MODEL YEAR 2002-2008 7-SERIES VEHICLES. A CHECK VALVE OF THE BRAKE VACUUM PUMP MAY LEAK A SMALL AMOUNT OF LUBRICATING OIL. OVER TIME THIS COULD RESULT IN CONTAMINATION OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER.
Risk: POWER ASSIST BRAKING PERFORMANCE COULD BE ADVERSELY AFFECTED. IN EXTREME CASES THERE COULD BE A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER ASSIST BRAKING. AN UNEXPECTED REDUCTION OR LOSS IN POWER BRAKING ASSIST MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
2010 BMW 5 SERIES
6080 vehicles affected
FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:FUEL GAUGE SYSTEM
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN 2010 AND 2011 5-SERIES AND 5-SERIES GRAN TURISMO PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 12 THROUGH JULY 1, 2010. THE VEHICLE'S FUEL LEVEL SENSOR WITHIN THE FUEL TANK CAN BECOME WEDGED AGAINST THE TANK.
Risk: IF THIS OCCURS, THE FUEL GAUGE IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WOULD DISPLAY A LARGER AMOUNT OF FUEL THAN WAS ACTUALLY IN THE TANK. AS A RESULT, IF THE TANK BECAME EMPTY, THE VEHICLE COULD STALL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
