The 2006 BMW 330XI has 0 complaints and 7 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report no specific issues in complaints. The recalls involve a range of safety and engine-related systems affecting this model.
The recalls cover multiple components including air bags and electrical systems. They address concerns such as air bag inflator defects, occupant classification sensor failures, potential fire hazards in the engine ventilation system, and wiring issues in the heating and air conditioning system. Each recall requires a free repair or replacement by authorized dealers.
Recalls- Occupant classification sensor. NHTSA recall 13V564000 affects 76,565 vehicles. The front passenger seat occupant detection mat can fatigue and develop cracks, possibly deactivating the air bag during a crash, increasing injury risk. BMW sent notification letters and will repair the mat free of charge when parts become available.
- Driver frontal air bag inflator. NHTSA recall 24V513000 covers 394,029 vehicles and involves potential explosions of replaced sport or M-sport steering wheel inflators during deployment. This defect risks sharp metal fragments striking occupants. Dealers will inspect and replace the air bag module as needed, free of charge, following owner notification in August 2024.
- Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve heater. NHTSA recall 19V273000 involves 184,505 vehicles. The PCV valve heater may short circuit and cause parts to melt, posing a fire hazard even when parked. BMW will replace the heater free of charge, with notifications beginning in May 2019.
- Occupant classification sensor. NHTSA recall 17V428000 affects 2,158 vehicles with sport seats or certain standard seats. The passenger seat mat can fatigue and crack, risking deactivation of the front passenger air bag. Owners were notified starting September 2017 and dealers will repair or replace the mat at no cost.
- Driver frontal air bag inflator. NHTSA recall 20V017000 includes 59,965 vehicles equipped with non-desiccated Takata inflators. Aging propellant may cause inflator explosions during deployment, risking injury from metal fragments. BMW will replace the air bag or inflator free of charge as part of repairs starting in March 2020.
- Wiring for heating and air conditioning system. NHTSA recall 17V676000 covers 702,965 vehicles. Electrical connectors and wiring controlling airflow may overheat and melt, increasing fire risk even when unattended. BMW will replace wiring and connectors free of charge following owner notifications in 2017.
Owners with repeated repairs or unresolved recall issues concerning safety defects should review their state’s lemon law protections. Consulting a qualified attorney may help identify potential consumer rights when defect repairs remain inadequate.
